The Economist Puts Archive Online
Magazine to digitize articles dating back to 1843.
The Economist is one of the world’s most respect magazines covering politics and business. Beginning in December, you will be able to access its fullarchives, dating back to 1843, according to a report in the Guardian. That’s around 600,000 pages of material, and it’s due to apartnership between the Economist and Gale, which is part of Cengage Learning. In many cases, a magazine digitizing its archives would just bring a shrugof the shoulders, but with a venerable history going back more than 160 years and an influential worldwide position, the Economist occupies a special position, and this can offer a treasure trove forscholars. “The Economist Historical Archive is more than a database – it is a remarkable record of the most significant world events over the past 160 years through the unbiased, probingeyes of the Economist," John Micklethwait, the magazine’s editor-in-chief told the newspaper. However, it won’t be cheap. The magazine is eyeing universities and institutions as itsmain market, and will be charging upwards of $3,000 for subscriptions, which will not be available to individuals.
