Toyota FT-86 Concept

Toyota-ft86

Inspired by the Corolla-based AE86, the Toyota FT-86 will be released in late 2011 for about $20,000 and up.

Its been awhile since we’ve seen a true 2+2 Toyota and while it seems like they’ve abandoned the segment altogether, that will all change come 2011. Shown here in its concept form, the Toyota FT-86 will be a rear wheel drive coupe with a 2.0 liter boxer engine sourced from Subaru. The production model is set to hit showrooms in late 2011.

  1. Nikolay at 2:00pm 1st April 2010 Well the Japanese version of the Impreza STI has a turbocharged 2.0 boxer engine with just over 290 hp and around 299 lbs of torque. From what they have released so far I think that's what the top of the line ft-86 will come with. So this isn't a successor to AE-86 or the Celica more of a Supra successor (imo).
Why would they go with the Subaru engine?
Its already in production so development costs are low. It has great power and torque output.
  2. James at 9:05am 6th October 2009 I love the look. Small engine though. Any chance they will come out with a sport version utilizing a turbo or something? I can definitely see the tuner crowd going crazy with this. I wonder why they decided to go with a Subaru engine?
    1. andrew at 9:18am 6th October 2009 I like it too. I've been wanting to see more RWD production cars these days, they are just more fun to drive. Like you said Ian, i'm sure the tuners will take to it as well. I think it would be easy to get 300+ HP out of it if done correctly.
