Apple App Store is now available in China

Complementing its new retail stores in China, Apple has launched local versions of its online store and App Store in Chinese, reports the AFP. The Chinese online store is intended to make legal purchasing possible and stave off a growing number of illegal application stores in the country, which offer products for reduced prices, or free.

“We are thrilled to open our newest online store in China,” Apple’s chief operating officer Tim Cook said. “With personalised engraving, configure-to-order options and free shipping on everything, the Apple Store is a great destination for our customers in China.”

All of Apple’s 300,000+ apps will be available for download. Local best-sellers and Chinese language apps will be highlighted. Like every other region, the store will feature free and paid apps.

Apple is making strong investments in China. The company is expected to open 25 Chinese retail stores by the end of 2011 and has been aggressively pushing its products in the country. On Sept. 17, the iPad hit shelves in China, followed closely by the iPhone 4 on Sept. 25.

“The growth pace of China’s smartphone market, Chinese users’ passion for Apple products and the great potential of the country’s smartphone and mobile Internet devices market” all boosted Apple’s confidence, said Wang Liusheng, an analyst with research firm Analysys International.

China has more than 420 million Internet users and more than 833 million people with a mobile phone, making it the largest mobile market in the world.

Apple has brought a lot of changes to its devices in the iOS 15 update with the new Focus taskbar, Live Text, the redesigned Safari browser, and more. However, the company has noted that the transition to the newest software hasn't been entirely smooth. Some users who opted out of Siri and Dictation's ability to record their voices for service improvements were recorded anyway.

Despite giving iOS users the ability to opt out of the service, recordings of unconsenting users were made and sent to Apple as the result of a bug in iOS 15. The bug has since been fixed as of the iOS 15.2 update, and Apple addressed the issue by saying that it deleted "audio received from all affected devices" in a statement to ZDNet. In the same statement, Apple said that the bug turned on the Improve Siri and Dictation setting on unaware iOS users, but the company has turned the setting off again for those affected.

Apple reports record revenue despite global chip shortage

Apple on Thursday reported record revenue for its most recent quarter, thanks largely to strong sales of the new iPhone 13.

Despite ongoing challenges caused by the global chip shortage, the tech giant reported earnings of $123.9 billion for the three-month period ending December 25, 2021 -- a significant increase over the $111.4 billion it recorded for the same quarter a year earlier.

A new entry-level iPad is coming later this year, and might possibly be unveiled alongside the iPhone 14 series. According to Dylan (@dylandkt), the 10th-gen iPad is slated for an official introduction towards the end of 2022. So, what’s changing this time around? Not much, actually.

Potential buyers are in line for the customary generation-over-generation chip upgrade. In this case, the silicon upgrade is still lagging by a whole generation. The 2022 iPad refresh will reportedly come equipped with an A14 Bionic chip. The 6th-gen iPad Mini that came out last year offers the faster A15 Bionic processor, the same system on a chip that also serves as the brains inside the iPhone 13 series phones.
