Apple Denies iPhones Are Exploding

Apple is denying that there's been a rash of exploding iPhones in Europe, instead blaming "external force."

Apple has been very firm in denying that the incidents of supposedly “exploding” iPhones reported recently in Europe are due to defects. It’s been suggested that overheating batteries have been the cause.

In a statement, the company said:

“To date, there are no confirmed battery overheating incidents for iPhone 3GS and the number of reports we are investigating is in the single digits.”

“The iPhones with broken glass that we have analyzed to date show that in all cases the glass cracked due to an external force that was applied to the iPhone.”

However, it’s being taken seriously enough for Herve Novelli, France’s secretary of state for trade and consumer affairs, to meet with Michel Coulomb, head of Apple France. According to AP, Novelli has said he will question Coulomb “causes of the implosion of these devices and eventual measures they could take.”

French consumer watchdog DGCCRF has been investigating the complaints, and the EU has used its Rapex for dangerous products to alert member countries to the problem.
