Apple Doubles iPhone, iPod touch Memory

Apple has doubled the memory available in iPhones and iPod touch, offering 16 GB iPhones and 32 GB iPod touches for $499.

Although it’s not the rumored 3G iPhone so many people have been hoping for, Apple today announced it is adding new configurations to its iPhone and iPod touch lines with double the memory of previous offerings. The new iPhone boasts 16 GB of storage and the new iPod touch has 32 GB of memory; both the new models are priced at $499.

"For some users, there’s never enough memory," said Apple’s Greg Joswiak, in a statement. "Now people can enjoy even more of their music, photos and videos on the most revolutionary mobile phone and best Wi-Fi mobile device in the world."

The new models join the existing 8 GB iPhone (still $399) and the 8 GB and 16 GB iPod touch models (still available for $299 and $399, respectively).

Both devices feature Apple’s multi-touch user interface, Cover Flow browsing of music and other media, and offer Apple’s latest location-savvy Map application that can plot a user’s location based on both cell signals (in the case of the iPhone) and nearby Wi-Fi hotspot (for both devices).

Both new models are available immediately.
