Since it won’t do to have an iPad running something called “iPhone OS,” Apple has decided to rename its mobile device operating system to simply “iOS 4,” encompassing all its mobile devices: the iPhone, the iPad, and the iPod Touch. According to Apple, iOS 4 will have over 100 new features, so let’s take a look at some of the key additions that will come with the iOS 4 software update, which Apple will release June 21.

Multitasking

This is what iPhone owners have been craving for years. Other mobile operating systems, such as Google’s Android and Palm’s WebOS, have had multitasking since day one, making this the biggest chink in the iPhone’s armor (besides Flash). Well Apple fans, it’s finally here, and it should greatly enhance the functionality of the iPhone.

According to Apple, multitasking services will include:

  • Background audio – Allows your app to play audio continuously. So customers can listen to your app while they surf the web, play games, and more.
  • Voice over IP – Your VoIP apps can now be even better. Users can now receive VoIP calls and have conversations while using another app. Your users can even receive calls when their phones are locked in their pocket.
  • Background location – Navigation apps can now continue to guide users who are listening to their iPods, or using other apps. iOS 4 also provides a new and battery efficient way to monitor location when users move between cell towers. This is a great way for your social networking apps to keep track of users and their friends’ locations.
  • Push notifications – Receive alerts from your remote servers even when your app isn’t running.
  • Local notifications – Your app can now alert users of scheduled events and alarms in the background, no servers required.
  • Task finishing – If your app is in mid-task when your customer leaves it, the app can now keep running to finish the task.
  • Fast app switching – All developers should take advantage of this. This will allow users to leave your app and come right back to where they were when they left – no more having to reload the app.

Folders

If you’re one of those people who downloads every free app you can find, then this feature is for you. You will now be able to organize your apps into folders with drag-and-drop simplicity. Apps are automatically organized into folders based on their App Store category, making the process as streamlined as possible.

Improved E-mail

You will now be able to unify all your e-mail accounts into one inbox, a great feature for those of you that have three or four different e-mail accounts. You’ll also be able to organize messages by threads and open attachments in third-party apps.

iBooks

First introduced on the iPad, iBooks will soon be a hand-me-down to the iPhone. The e-reader app will allow you to sync your iBooks library on all your Apple devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod) and will actually remember what place you’re at in a book when changing devices.

Other Notable Additions

  • 5x digital zoom
  • Tap-to-focus video
  • Create custom playlists
  • Spell checking
  • Custom backgrounds

Device Compatibility

While not all features will be compatible with every device, here is a list of which devices the iOS4 update will be available for:

iPhone 4 iPhone 3gS iPhone 3G (no multitasking) iPod Touch 3rd Gen iPod Touch 2rd Gen iPad (fall release)

  5. ilovemyboys at 6:48pm 27th July 2010 I'm getting my first iphone ( a 3gs ) tomorrow and I'm wondering if ios4 will automatically be loaded or if I'll also have to install an "update" - my father has an iphone without multi-tasking, will multi-tasking work on my device? and if so how do I "close" an app in order to maintain battery? Thanks in Advance

  9. CrimmyCrumbs24 at 5:10pm 20th June 2010 YAY!!! 1 more day, but this is how lifeless I actually am; I AM GOING TO STAY UP UNTIL MIDNIGHT TO GET iOS 4! I just can't take it anymore, I found out about it about 2 months ago and was pretty patient until about now. APPLE iPHONE AND iPOD TOUCH LOVERS REJOICE!!!
    1. CrimmyCrumbs24 at 5:13pm 20th June 2010 This is CrimmyCrumbs again.....I just wish they would introduce Flash, well, I wish.
      1. CrimmyCrumbs24 at 6:31am 21st June 2010 Did ANY of you get the firmware update today? It's 9:30AM in Pennsylvania. I don't know why it hasn't come yet. If you do have it because you got it today, PLEASE HELP ME!!
  10. dang at 3:10am 14th June 2010 Ah, good and bad then. Thanks for letting me know. Battery life is so bad right now I was pretty worried.
  11. Kulad77 at 12:44pm 13th June 2010 Does anyone know if there are plans for a new generation ipod touch in the not too distant future?
    1. CrimmyCrumbs24 at 5:15pm 20th June 2010 I really don't know, but you know how they made the iPod Touch 1G after the original iPhone right? And the same with the iPhone 3GS and the iTouch 3G? Well, something tells me they *MIGHT* make a iPod Touch 4G. And just like the others, it would probably resemble the phone in one way or another.

  12. Spadesean at 12:37am 13th June 2010 The battery on my 3GS went from 99 to 4 in 3 hours with the new multitasking. Worst idea ever to allow 3gs to have it. It's automatic as well, so you have to manually close apps now, which sucks a LOT.
    1. CrimmyCrumbs24 at 6:44am 21st June 2010 That sucks.....I hope the same doesn't happen to my iPhone 3GS.
  13. Stephen Done at 5:46am 12th June 2010 TJ - Technically, the 8GB iPod Touch is not the 3rd gen touch. Only the 32 and 64 GB touches have the faster processor and more memory that the iPhone 3GS has, and they are also the only ones that can do Open GL. So, only those larger two models are 3rd generation.
    1. CrimmyCrumbs24 at 6:26pm 20th June 2010 Correction (Oh God, I just started doodling out this website as Mr. Correction), Jimmy iPod. You DON'T get custom home screen backgrounds UNLESS YOU HAVE THE 32GB AND 64GB 3G MODELS. The only way you would was if you jailbreaked it (which, by the sounds of it, you MIGHT have.)
  14. TJ Spyke at 5:09am 12th June 2010 I am pissed that even though I have a 3rd gen iPod Touch (I got it in February 2010), I will be getting a gimped version of iOS 4. If you have a 8GB iPod Touch (like me), you will not get multitasking, bluetooth keyboard support, or custom backgrounds. The multitasking one especially sucks because that is the biggest feature in the update. At least Apple is not screwing us again by charging $10 like they did for the 3.0 upgrade.
    1. jimmyipod at 5:49pm 19th June 2010 umm yr pretty stupid because yes you do. i have an 8gig. all you dont get is multitasking. everything else is still good. and if u really want multitaskingg. just jailbreak ur ipod u can multitask there.
    2. CrimmyCrumbs24 at 6:24pm 20th June 2010 Listen to Stephen. It is just a second gen. 8 gig ipod touch. All they did to change it was put it on the OS 3 firmware. Apple probably didn't put multitasking, wallpapers, or bluetooth only because of it's not-as-fast-as-the-3G-iTouches-RAM. They beat the 8 gigs py 50 percent ram. But, if you insist (which is not the best choice, in my opinion), on jailbreaking it, then there you go.
  15. Spadesean at 4:09am 12th June 2010 i can't find iBooks, but I am running the new iOS 4.
    1. CrimmyCrumbs24 at 6:29pm 20th June 2010 Did you install it from the App Store? That's where you have to get it from.
  16. Chris at 5:29pm 11th June 2010 dang -- I've been running the beta for a month and a half or so. The new multi-tasking does not affect battery life. The exception to this -- one i haven't been able to test will be running music-streaming apps in the background while doing other things.Apple's multi-tasking on iOS is smoke and mirrors. It appears to be true multi-tasking to the end user, but it's a set of specific API's that let some apps do things in the background while others are simply paused.
    1. Alex at 4:30pm 14th July 2010 Ummm no your wrong Multitasking can be done with the iOS 4 officially updated apps chris so you cant multitask with those apps cause the update to work with ios 4 hasnt come out yet so dont get your panties in a bunch and just let them update apss to ios 4 compatible such nubs
  17. dang at 4:46pm 11th June 2010 Can't wait for this. I'm curious how quick the battery will be drained with multi-tasking, but folders are a long time coming. I'm pretty excited for the email changes as well.
