It's because the new version is coming out soon. Plain and simple. It was rumored to be out this month, but now rumors are in June.

I don't think it's a marketing ploy, I think they didn't forcast the volume of sales accurately. No-one would have thought that thru Q2 they would still be so hot. I'm thinking they are likely going to surprise announce a new phone with a removeable battery and G3 technology. That's why the sell-out is happening.
