Both carriers have holes and both have spots with amazing coverage. Where I live and work, VZW is very inconsistent. I use a VZW powered tablet for work and an AT&T cell phone. More often than not, I have good signal with the phone and nothing with the tablet.
This analysis totally ignores network performance, availability, and reliability... and in North Georgia there simply IS no comparison... Verizon is the HANDS DOWN winner here. My AT&T 4S is lucky to get 1 bar in the mountains, and I can't even post FB pics because the network is so slow, and in many places nonexistent. Many times, i can't even send or receives text messages. It's HORRIBLE! My buddies' Verizon iPhones all stay fast and reliable everywhere we ride... which is why I will shortly be moving our 2 iPhone lines to Verizon. Hopefully I can get a decent price for our AT&T iPhones. I'm sick of my AT&T 4S simply not WORKING more than 70 miles north of Atlanta...

Yeah, you'll likely end up paying more with these types of plans unless you use Wi-Fi more and curb your usage down to 2-3GB per month. If you two have to share more than 4GB, it's going to get expensive.
