Back in 2010, AT&T led the way toward the elimination of unlimited data plans and now the carrier is at it again. On Jan. 22, the wireless carrier will raise the minimum cost of a usable smartphone data plan from $25 to $30 per month. This comes as the carrier begins widespread deployment of its 4G LTE network across the country.
Here are the new data plans:
- $20 per month for 300MB
- $30 per month for 3GB
- $50 per month for 5GB
- $15 per month for 200MB
- $25 per month for 2GB
- $45 for 4GB (with tethering access)
Much like how AT&T doubled the minimum cost of a texting plan to $20 earlier this year, the company is spinning these price increases as better “value” for customers. Unfortunately, the reality is that subscribers now have to pay $30 instead of $25 for a smartphone plan with enough data to actually use your smartphone and those poor unfortunate souls who opt for the cheapest plan available will now have to pay $20 for 300MB instead of $15 for 200MB, meaning they are being ripped off even more than they were before.
Overages for users on the cheap plan have gotten worse as well. Those who try to save some money by opting for the least expensive option get dinged with overages that are more than six times higher ($20 for another 300MB) than the $10 for an extra 1GB that those with the 3GB plan get.
Here is the new base price of an individual AT&T smartphone plan (with texting and a usable data plan more than 1GB):
- $40 per month for 450 minutes of talk
- $20 per month for unlimited texting
- $30 for 3GB of data
- Total: $90 before fees and taxes
Sadly, Verizon’s prices are almost just as bad, except that it still offers a $10 per month texting plan (1000 texts) and does not have a somewhat malicious 200-300MB plan. If AT&T truly wanted to offer a $20 plan, then it should offer 2GB for $20 and 1GB for $10. Its prices are higher because it wishes to create a plan that is almost unusable to force overages or its users to bump up to a more expensive plan.
We suppose this is one way for AT&T to pay off the $4 billion in damages it now owes T-Mobile since the merger fell through.
AT&T’s last big rate change was slowly followed by Verizon. Will other carriers raise rates now as well?
Update: Small correction in T-Mobile payout amount.
$20 for 300MB $30 for 3GB. What sense does that make?
2-7? That is not good. Other companies pull well over that number.
where is the plan for one person that wants to use data on one device? I’m looking for a smart phone and a data plan that does NOT have the word “share” in it. I’m not “sharing” anything with anyone or any other device. Where is that plan listed?
It’s becoming harder to find, unfortunately. AT&T and Verizon are trying to push individual plan users onto more expensive sharing plans. It’s not a fun trend.
Their hspa+ its pretty fast, 2 to 7mbps in seattle. Ive been with them for a long time… Time to switch tho

The carriers are taking advantage of the ignorance of people concerning numbers. 3 GB sounds like a lot but the average person doesn’t understand what a gigabyte is. They also don’t understand how quickly a 4G network will burn through 3 GB. This is deception on a grand scale that needs intervention to stop.
They also raised our crap DSL price’s by $5 it is now $25 and it seems to be slower, Year’s ago it started at $15 which then was still too much for 1 mbps it’s now 0.7 mbps and 10 bucks more wtf. They are crook’s and should be burned to the ground.
wow, $20 a month for 200 mb? that’s a rip off! I remember when they did unlimited text messages for $20 a month. go figure… txtmsgs use less bandwidth than voice. But 200 mb? I’d be over that cap in less than a day…
500 text messages = 1 minute voice call in data. Why does unlimited text messaging cost $20?
Greedy F*****s!!!

CREDO. That is all. ;)
Everyone in New York should get a freaking discount let alone a rise. Their 3G network is atrocious here. It’s overloaded, download speeds are painfully slow and there are still major areas of Manhattan in which you can’t download data at all, despite being connected to 3G according to your phone’s display. I pay a hell of a lot of money to AT&T in order to be connected on the go 24/7 for work, and yet I spend a frustrating amount of time trying to download data again and again because they haven’t bothered to improve their network in years.
lololol att.
Thief!!.. That is all I have to say…
are previously grandfathered unlimited data plans exempt from the price hike?
Yeah Danielle. You are safe for now, but ATT is throttling speeds of unlimited data users so if you use a lot of data you may notice a slowdown in speed.
The cost of this serves is entirely too expensive. They are basically raping the America public, however willingly they allow it.
Fuck ATT. They throttled my data speeds before the 9th of this month!
/major dislike…BTW, I thought AT&T owe T-Mobile $4B…
Aaand, you are correct. I must have missed the final payout amount. I’ve corrected the statement. What’s a billion or two between friends?
Hahaha…it’s all good! Thanks for info on price increase!
BTW, will current plans grandfathered? Do you know?
It appears that they will be grandfathered in, for now. But as LTE rolls out and services change, there is always a chance AT&T will find ways to force an upgrade on consumers eventually.
OIC…thanks again for info! :D
I’m sure you know this, but a change in price is also a valid reason to terminate contract without fees.
