Buy one, get one: AT&T throws in a Galaxy Tab for $1 with a Galaxy Alpha

The closer we get to the holiday season, the more great deals carriers announce for their loyal customers. In recent months, AT&T has offered a few promotions in which users who buy a flagship phone get another device at a huge discount. Now, those who buy Samsung’s metal-framed Galaxy Alpha will pay $0 down for the phone and get the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 thrown in for just $1.

It may sound like a great deal — and it is — but there’s a huge catch.

To be eligible for the promotion, customers must buy the Alpha with an AT&T Next plan, and the Galaxy Tab 4 with a two-year contract. In other words, you don’t actually get the Alpha for free, you have to pay the full retail price of $613 over the course of several months, depending on which Next plan you choose. Meanwhile, you’ll get the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 for just $1, but the tablet will be shackled to a two-year contract on AT&T’s network, so you’re out of luck if you suddenly decide to switch carriers. The tablet typically retails for $270, though, so you are saving money in that regard.

If you’re an AT&T customer who doesn’t mind being on a two-year contract for the tablet and a Next plan for the phone at the same time, it’s a great deal. You’ll essentially get a tablet and a phone for $614 and that’s the kind of deal you won’t find very often. However, if you have any reservations about signing a two-year agreement with the carrier, this isn’t the deal for you.

The details of the deal are listed on AT&T’s website as you go to buy the Galaxy Alpha. All the info is embedded in the small print, which you can read in full here.
