Here’s a follow up to our previous post on a set of dashing new colors for Google’s flagship handset: we now have an official-looking leaked picture of a red Nexus 5, supplied by the ever-reliable tipster @evleaks. If you’ve been holding off on picking up the phone in the hope that a wider range of hues might become available, it looks like you won’t have to wait much longer.

Of course, Google is remaining tight-lipped, but at this stage there seems to be too much smoke around for there to be no fire at the center of it all. Multiple sources and multiple tip-offs would suggest that it’s only a matter of time before the Nexus 5 is available in something other than black or white. It’s the way that the market is going too, with Apple’s iPhone 5C range and the vibrant colors of the Nokia Lumia collection.

If the rumors are to believed, you’ll be able to get yourself a shiny Nexus 5 in orange, yellow, green, blue and purple as well as red. A whisper from a Vietnamese site suggested these extra handset choices would appear sometime in February or March, so expect an announcement at any time.

Bear in mind that the current black and white models aren’t only differentiated by color: the black edition has a softer back that’s easier to grip, while the white version uses a glossy back case. It seems likely that the alternative colors in the pipeline will follow the white model’s lead and color in the front speaker grill too (as shown in the @evleaks picture).

A big Google Pixel 9 feature just leaked, and it sounds impressive

Google introduced a “screen protector detector” service with the launch of Google Pixel 8 last year. It detects when you take a screen protector on or off to adjust the display's touch sensitivity. Google now seems to be building upon that and is aiming to release a new feature called “Adaptive Touch” with the next Pixel.

According to a report from Android Authority, Google is preparing to add this Adaptive Touch feature on the Google Pixel 9. In his teardown of Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1, Mishaal Rahman found the option under Settings > Display > Touch sensitivity. It is said to “automatically adjust to your environment, activities, and screen protector.”

Need a cheap, reliable 5G phone? The Google Pixel 6a is $270 today

While there are savings from phone deals on the latest flagship devices, you can also get discounts that will make previous-generation models even cheaper. For example, the Google Pixel 6a, which is already pretty affordable at its original price of $349, is down by $79 from Amazon's Woot to just $270. There are several days remaining on this offer to get the Android smartphone at 23% off, but you're going to want to finalize your purchase as soon as possible because there's a chance that stocks run out before the bargain's scheduled expiry.

Why you should buy the Google Pixel 6a
The latest Google Pixel smartphones are the Google Pixel 8 and the Google Pixel 8 Pro, but the Google Pixel 6a, released in 2022, is still a worthwhile purchase. It's an affordable smartphone with support for 5G technology for fast data speeds, and since it's unlocked, it will work with all the major carriers such as Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T. You'll be able to maximize the enhanced connectivity with the smooth performance provided by the Google Pixel 6a's Tensor processor, which is Google's first-ever chip that's designed for Pixel smartphones.

5 phones you should buy instead of the iPhone 15 Pro
iPhone 15 Pro in Natural Titanium held in hand in front of a wooden gate.

Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro is what we consider one of the best iPhones that you can buy right now. It offers most of the latest cutting-edge tech from Apple, including the powerful new A17 Pro chip, an improved camera system, a beautiful ProMotion display, a titanium body, the new Action button, and USB-C. It’s Apple’s most premium phone but in a compact size.

But if you’re in the market for a new phone, you should know there are other options, too. You don’t necessarily need the latest and greatest from Apple, especially if you’re not truly vested in its ecosystem.
