When T-Mobile launched the very first Android-powered handset – the G1 – back in 2008, the app library to go along with it looked like a minimart beside Apple’s Walmart. But the past few years have been kind to Google. The steady release of high-profile, high-power Android handsets have turned that initial drizzle of apps into a torrent. Though it used to be called the Android Market, the Google Play store offers applications for just about everything. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up what we think are the best Android apps in several different categories. We’ll continue to update this list periodically.
Make sure to check out Best Android games and our picks for The Best Android phones.

imo messenger (Free)
Trying to persuade your friends and family to agree on one instant messaging service can prove impossible. Thankfully, Imo is here to soothe your pain. It supports everything from Facebook Chat to Yahoo Messenger to Skype and you can link up multiple accounts. You can make voice calls, share multimedia files, and join in group messaging sessions. It’s a multiplatform solution with fully searchable chat history. A streamlined user interface makes it very accessible and easy to use.
Tapatalk Forum App ($3)
Trying to browse and post on forums from your smartphone can be a real pain. Tapatalk is designed to make it smooth and easy to access forums. It’s faster than using a standard mobile web browser, easy to access your favorites, and you can keep up to date with threads via a simple interface. All forums are organized by category, you can search, and the majority of forum features are available. It is currently supported by thousands of popular forums, so there’s a good chance your regular haunts are on the list, but it’s always worth checking before you buy.
GasBuddy (Free)
Apps that can save you money are always welcome and GasBuddy is the best app for finding cheap gas. Wherever you happen to be in the U.S. or Canada, you can fire up this app and it will provide you with a list of the gas stations in your vicinity in list or map view. All you have to do is choose the cheapest one. The app relies on an active community of users who earn points by reporting the latest prices. You can use points to win prizes like free gas.
Dolphin Browser (Free)
When it comes to speed, Dolphin is comparable to Chrome. The popular Dolphin Browser has just been updated and it offers Sonar, Gesture, and Add-on support. Sonar enables you to search, share, bookmark, and navigate with voice commands. You can create gestures to access specific websites and there are 60 add-ons to choose from. It’s a solid browser with a lot to offer.
Best Apps Market (Free)
Need a fast and reliable app discovery tool? Best Apps Market is free and it features hand-picked lists and tools to organize your downloads. You’ll find independent reviews, money saving options, and easy to use filters. The Game Genome Project is set to roll into the app soon and it offers you a way to search for apps using a wide variety of filters so you can find your perfect game.
Widgetsoid (Free)
Widgetsoid allows you to create your own widgets for various phone functions. You can create a widget that will allow you to toggle your 4G antenna on and off, or create your own clock widget that can display whatever phone information you want, from battery charge to phone temperature. It’s pretty useful. There is a free and a paid version, which has some added functionality.
iTriage Mobile Health (Free)
Created by doctors, this app is designed to give users quick and easy access to medical info as well as nearby treatment facilities. With just a few clicks, users can find the nearest medical facility based on need (emergency, urgent care, pharmacy, etc.) and quickly use built-in Google Maps to navigate to the destination. The app also features a symptom-checker, doctor directory, and information about diseases and procedures.
Chrome Beta (Free)
The default Android Web browser is fine, but if you’re on an Android 4.0 phone (or tablet), you can now download a fully operational version of Google Chrome. Simply put, it’s the best mobile browser we’ve used, with robust tab management, private browsing, and the ability to sync your tabs from your browser with your phone.
Pulse News (Free)
This free app is a great reader for those who like to get their daily dose of news or gossip on their Android device. Pulse lets users select up to 30 online sources to pull from, and then creates clean, magazine-like pages that feature thumbnail photos and headlines from each source. Most articles or blogs can be easily read within the app, and the sources update in a flash. It’s the perfect substitute for your morning or evening Internet scan. Add sources like CNN, Gawker, Salon, Wet Paint, MSNBC, and Mashable.
It’s pretty universally accepted that mobile devices, while great tools for plenty of tasks, are not built for extended typing sessions. SwiftKey 3 Keyboard challenges this belief and gives the classic keyboard a run for its money. Rather than just focus on spelling or or the word that you’re currently typing, SwiftKey 3 Keyboard looks at the context of your full message and puts together the most logical predictions and corrections. Miss a space, spell a word wrong, or type the wrong usage and this app will fix it for you on the fly.

you Absolutely exact pretty
For me one of useful apps in google play is Silent Agent.
From now I don’t need to remember about profile switching.
Is very simple. I think this’s the most important. I don’t like apps where from 1000 of function I’m using only few.
You must check @pamli!
well done, I have the Samsung galaxy nexus myself , swap from an orange spvc500 which is a windows phone , never again, was too hard to get apps, now android and Google make it so easy to get hold off apps, it is a win win situation, on Google it just works. thanks.Ian
If anybody likes card games Rage of Bahamut is awesome. Give it a try. If you do find me and I’ll help you out best I can. My IGN is grneyes531 and use this code “upu04197″ to get a special rare card and some extra currency to help you out :)
Found a good FREE NFL forecaster app called AI Sports Engine 2013. I downloaded it last week and so far its successfully forecasted 10 out of 13 games.
Hi Guys, we have just launched MINI CANNON for Android. Available though Google Play, it features 80 levels with stunning graphics
and catchy music. You have to alter the cannon’s power and trajectory to get the ball into the box after shooting the stars.

I completely disagree with the recommendation for a task killer. They are not necessary and generally cause problems. The only reason to have one is if you have a rogue app that must be force closed. But that can be done natively within the application settings. Task killers that run on startup cause apps to continually restart themselves that would otherwise not be running. Try to educate yourself before making such stupid choices. I was convinced to try an app killer and all it did was mess up my phone until I removed it.
I’ve tried both, and I like the Android app for TappIn much better than Dropbox.
Nice selection of apps. They all cover the basic needs you would expect when first setting up your device. Makes wanting an Android even more desirable though just seeing all of this stuff.
thank you so much for mentioning this… changed my life!

If you have any android phone some of the top apps to make sure you have are Ninja live, Prankdial, FML app, EPL buddy , Handscent witch is an app for texting, MSpot which is a great app for storing any song u have on ur phone works alot better than the regular music app u start off with. My last and favorite app is if u install Frostwire on ur computer u can upload any addroid phone to this software so u can share free song, videos, and pictures to ur phone.
Good list .. but did u had to put each app in separate page? Thank god I have FastestChrome extension ..
I found this interesting app on Android market called "mGuessWho!?" that claims to exercise user's ability to think critically in order to recognize the blurred image. It also have a nice feature where one can challenge social friends with their own image and bet challenge point on it. nice app for free!
Two new games I've been playing are Dead End, a zombie shooter and Zenonia, an old school rpg. Check them both out.
A nice new game app for Android: Thief's Challenge https://market.android.com/details?id=air.ThiefsC…

A free productive personalized news app I like is YourVersion http://www.yourversion.com/index.php?p=androidapp . It's definitely helpful for me when I'm on the go or in between meetings and want to take a look at all the latest news from my favorites teams, tech trends and any other interests I can think of. It's also easy to email and tweet stories like. I recommend checking it out..

Wasn’t nesoid removed from the market a couple months back?
Check out Dash & Ditto's Playground, a new android app my husband developed for young kids. It's very cute and my 4 year old son loves it! He collaborated with a local Seattle artist who hand drew all the art.
Website: http://dashandditto.catglo.com/
Link to Android Market (free version): http://market.android.com/searchq=pn…playground…
Dash & Ditto's Playground is a 7-in-1 game pack for kids includes hopscotch, mini-golf, jump rope, tic-tac-toe, and a whack-a-mole style game. The two additional games include a bus driving game where children are rewarded for paying attention while picking up the animal friends for school and a game that lets baby bunnies out of their cage to be fed, caught or even dance for your child.
The main characters are adorable bunnies named Dash and Ditto, who invite their animal friends to join your child on a journey through their playground. Appropriate for kids of all ages, even pre-readers.
This is a nice, long, and comprehensive list. Thank you for the effort. I now have a bunch of new apps to play with on the Droid.

Check out QwikList Voice. From the website: This is a handy home screen app that allows you add items to a list, send SMS, or quick add to Google Calendar by speaking to your phone! Uses Google voice to text. You can quickly and easily create reminders, shopping lists, to do lists, task lists with speech. Now supports adding item to list via barcode scan. One of the only Android apps that allows easy quick add to Google Calendar in widget form.
If anybody likes live wallpapers, I would like to propose True Water LWP.
Just awesome, super realistic water simulation and interactive fish. Free version even does not have any ads!
My real useful Best Android app list only two 1. Timeriffic & 2. 007Phone. If there is a third position available it would be dolphin browser.

Hello, I think SwiftKey keyboard is the best app ever.
Best file manager, AndroXplorer.
SO IM LOOKING FOR AN APP SIMILAR TO THE IPHONE FEATURE. IT TAKES PICTURES OF THE CURRENT SCREEN THE THE PHONE IS VIEWING OR ON? DOES THE ANDROID OFFER THIS AS AN APP OR FEATURE?
A good one is called Shoot Me it works great

Widgetsoid is a GREAT app for those who want to make their own toggle buttons. At first it’s a bit confusing and can be fusterating, but after you take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the app it’s pretty easy and quick.
SwiftKey I have, at first I hated the auto-correct, but after the last update, it’s gotten better. Also you can now swype entire sentences seemlessly, and it’s typically correct. Oddly enough typing entire sentences seems to be more correct than single words.
iTriage is an OK app. It’s more for the person who’s constantly around people who get hurt.
Search android market for Voodoo Your Buddy. Great app.
I think Voodoo Your Buddy is one of the funniest apps for android. You get to make anyone you know into your own voodoo doll and stick them with pins to hear them scream LOL. Great for ex girlfriends/boyfriends hahaha.
Google Goggles, and I have one NES and one SNES game. Although, I’m likely to delete the games soon as the controls are glitchy, they drain the battery, and they take up lots of space, and I haven’t really played them much. I think Sound Hound (or a similar such app) should be added to the list. I definitely love being in a restaurant, grocery store, etc., and being able to answer, “Who is this?” and “What’s the name of this song”. A dictionary is also quite a handy thing to have, so I think that should be on there, as well. As for the rest, I don’t use them because, I don’t drive, I don’t often play games, or I utilize already installed features of the phone to perform the same task.
My favorite android app is fastmall. Its been on iphone and just released to android market! Awesome and helpful.
i have the htc hero..has anyone downloaded ebook apps with any success?.thx
I'd add near2there: http://www.near2there.com
This is a great, free Android app that let's you create reminders for all of those places you want to go.
When you are near you get a pop up saying (something like) "Yo, dis is da place you wanted to go to! Don't Foget, girl!"
app killer, cache cleaner, start up manager IN ONE APP
Refine Efficiency – http://refineandroid.doodlekit.com/
Fast, Simple utility:
– app killer (less clicks than in ATK Free);
– cache cleaner (root and non root);
– start up manager (bootable apps are highlighted);
– strong scheduling features;
– 1 click maintenance button.
Also browser history cleaner and airplane mode switcher.
The NES emulator is badass. For an awesome social game, check out PhoneFraze
Lol, good catch. I'll see if editor's can update it.
Swiftkey is by far the best keyboard. A good app to add to the utilities is EasyEyez. Works like F.lux for the PC and keeps my eyes from straining at night. Highly recommended.
For the gamers who love 2D-Games:
1. Angry Birds
2. Barney the Box
3.Amazing Alex
"Im Here Plus" is a combination of "I'm here", "Where are you?" and SMS popup.
"Im Here Plus" allows you to use SMS text messaging to check the status and GPS location of any person on your contact list, as long as they have "Im Here Plus" installed as well. You may also choose to send others your current location via SMS, whether with just your GPS address or with an edited personalized location.
Anyone can also text you "where r u?" from any device and receive an automatic response with your availability (which you may manually select: busy or free), as well as your current GPS location.
Unique feature "Smart GPS":
We all know GPS doesn't work well when you're inside of buildings, upon this point, Phone will use tower signal to only get approximate address which may be too far off from your current address. "Smart GPS" will solve this issue.
How Smart GPS works? It learns the position's data from your activities in the past, combines with time and signals data, try to provide the best address.
the G+ and Huddle Android apps are very good. here are some screen-shots of them on the Samsung Galaxy Tab|: http://google-plus-network.blogspot.com/2011/07/g…
I have an EVO and an EVO shif and there are a few apps that I have found very, very helpful:
Apps Organizer – This app lets you bundle your apps into categories. Really unclutters the screens
Juice Defender – Monitors battery
Lookout Mobile Security – exactly what it sounds like
Has been changed to XiiaLive
You give some great, valuable information to all of us Android-addicts! I'm really digging the latest Android apps as they really seem to be stepping up and rivaling, if not passing their iPhone counterparts. It's an exciting time to be in this market and to be taking advantage of what these awesome Android phones can do. W
I wish all these reviews would put country details, i.e. whether an App is for the US only or list the countries they will work in. I mean that IS kinda important!
A nice one is Speed Shutter. It takes pictures at 20 frames per second, you don't miss much that way and get some cool action shots.
I hate and will never play Pocket Empire simply because of the legions of players who go around posting this spam.
If the phone uses Android, then you can download on your PC and upload to the phone and install. You can also simply download through the phone's browser and install (skipping the Market app). It's Android, you can do what you want.
Here is a great one for staying focused when driving. It’s free and it helps find missing kids. TextNoMore http://textnomore.com/
I seen the App for Nesoid Lite.. but how do you get the games on them? Like the old Mario games SuperMario Bros 1, 2 or 3?
good info, thanks! I'd like to add another free Android app called Who's Free that I use it with my friends now. It's great for catching up with Facebook friends who are free at the moment. And the app is the Vator Splash finalist! you can take a look http://bit.ly/htLQDW
PLEASE STOP recommending task killers, they're a waste of time. Quotin the goondroid wiki: "You don't need one of these. The android operating system will handle your memory better than you can, and what you think is actually churning down your battery is most likely just confirmation bias and the observer effect."
Android is NOT WINDOWS – tasks don't "clog up the memory". Bad apps do that, and should be removed, not constantly force closed.
Read this: http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/04/multitasking-android-way.htm

I love Ring Droid!! I can download songs and save them as new ring tones.
Are your catagories the top five most popular? How many Android apps are in each of these catagories?
I think this is the best game for android over all:”An exciting year” (http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.highquality.exc…)There's a trial called “An exciting week”The app gives you an assignment every day, to spicen up your life a bit. Y'should give it a chance
dumbest app ever. thumbs down
That's what it looks like on my Droid (well, they call it Milestone here)

Nice list, the guardian news app and Amazon Buzz are two I check everyday
quite well contained information. i just came across another app called LiveAlbum about which I read in some other blogs.. subsequently i downloaded it.. though the app has interesting features, it was very slow in the beginning.. but the app was updated very recently and i must the say the app is just amazing. wide range of use cases..

I would love to get one of my apps up in this kind of list area. My latest app is Angel Sheep and Wolves, which is a physics based game where you have to guide the sheep into the pen through many different level. Check it out https://market.android.com/details?id=air.com.aif… and I would love feedback.

I just uploaded my first app "mwine" to Android Market and was interested in this very topic. Do people find quit buttons necessary for these apps despite the automatic Android handling of memory? Or is going to desktop and running apps until memory is needed okay with people? The feedback for me so far seems half and half.
I recommend "Droid Scare" as best FUN app

Servers included are PHP, Git, SSH, FTP, MySQL and 40 others!

What about for distracted Driving?
I vote for dolhpin browser. I use it on my Kindle fire.
And I like one more application that is not currently in this liks – it is ArkMC app. To play video from NAS and PC to tablet or TV.
I want to submit my apps, how i can do it in your website.
I love 007Phone and Timeriffic.
These are all great but just scratches the surface. So many amazing apps for Android!

I chanced upon a great finance app called EasyMoney that has a bill reminder in it! Loves the daily balance report too!
do these apps work on the htc desire as well?
I like these games but my favourite is called "Wakattack"….it's a veeeery addicting game.. The free version has 20 levels put I purchased the full version and has 50 levels…its awesome and i'd recommend you to add it to the top games list!
I downloaded Santa Booth on Android and it was awesome!! You can find it on Santabooth.net, it was similar to Chunky booth which takes a picture and make the person look like they are huge!!! I also like Harbor Boat Master which is on the Android market and is by far the best game out.
There is an app called "Springle" that came out after this article was written. It is the best trippy visuals toys I've seen for Android. Springle is like a screensaver but it follows your touch to make mind blowing images. Very very fun.
a new click to load a new page for every app ?

**UPDATE** Comcast customers can now use the Watch ESPN app on their android phones. :-)
Android is the best cause it provides lots of interesting apps. I do enjoy ‘em.
Here is another cool android voice recognition app you can use it to create lists and reminders……http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTA1QmTr-Xs
The Weather Channel app has been a favorite of mine for a while. Recently they updated. I liked the interface but it was crashing way too much for me, and I looked for an alternative. WeatherBug has been off my radar for years because of issues with the PC program, but I gave it a try. I like it better than TWC because of the amount of detailed information available. Very nice.
If you need a periodic table for college, I must say I love Periodic Droid, really helpfull
In Texas, the land of weird liquor laws, it's hard to find a store that actually sells hard liquor. With Liquor Run Mobile, it's no longer an issue if you don't know where the closest liquor store is. I am not the developer. ;-)
I have also been using Fling to get the app of the week right on my phone. Works pretty good
No dating apps at all?
I suggest flirtmaps, tried also on iphone: free, gps based, easy and simple, awesome UI
All these apps run better on an iPhone 4. Does Google do anything original?
The problem is the phone doesn't work.
isnt this for a droid not iphone?
Yeah, all these apps are for android phones, which includes droid, droid 2, droid x, droid incredible, droid eris, etc.
Not at all for iphone, but it is very much possible that you find these apps in the apple appstore too, in their iphone's version.
Are there any Mac users that aren't stuck-up half-wooded scruffy-looking nerfherders?
TrueCaller should be among the best apps!
Are these the top give most popular apps catagories? How many apps are in each of these catagories?
I stumbled onto the “1CAST VIDEO NEWS” app today and am thrilled with this application. I haven't seen anything like it and the video quality is superb with a solid 3G connection. Its like having a TV in my pocket with all the news I want, although I do not have to watch crappy news that doesn't pique my interest. If you have a Nexus One & enjoy consuming news then this new 1CAST app is a must download.
RingDroid is sweet. After mounting your phone or downloading songs, you can highlight, edit, and save your new songs as ring tones.
I found a app excelent…”Squirrel” is very nice for you can remember the locations and come back using the radar…:-D…But my favorite option is than you can export your point like .gpx…and after can see it in Google earth…:P
is there someone owning this site
I wanted to try Field Trip, but I cannot download it from the Play Store. It says “This app is incompatible with all of your devices.” All of my devices means, it does not work on Nexus One, Nexus 4 and my new Sony Xperia Z?! So with what kind of magic phone can you run this app???
Ok, got it. It is only for people who live in the US of A. Crap, google!
If you are in UK and want simple lightweight (only 230kb) news app just go to android market and search for PortalGate UK.PortalGate UK is FREE and is simple and have all you need in one place!
