Whatta joke. Yet another example of how the system is stacked against the average person. When carbon based ppl lose a job, it's devastating economic loss. When a corporate person shutters its biz, it files BK and reorganizes at zero loss to the shareholders.

I definitely agree this is a smart strategy on their part. Better to adapt to consumer needs and stay afloat than to risk what happened to Circuit City and go down hard and have to switch over to a web site only retail model very suddenly.

However, I don't see the move to primarily cell phone only stores as all that desperate. I wouldn't be surprised if the bulk of in-store business has been primarily cell phone based the last few years. Scaling down and just focusing on that instead of being stubborn is pretty smart.

There was a show on MSNBC where they covered Best Buy and how they are being affected by online retailers and the market as a whole. They really struggled in China and had to pull the plug there right after launching. Their acquisition of CarPhone Warehouse in the UK was successful overall, but anytime I see an electronics retailer scale down and put a big emphasis on cell phones, I would sell their stock immediately. Cell phones have kept the aging Radio Shack alive, and it's a desperate move on Best Buy's part as well to depend on a single category like that to keep the business going.

With that said, I do think their strategy of having smaller shops is a smart one. I feel like their current stores are unnecessarily large for what they have in there. That and I would never buy audio equipment from them. Their displays are junked up and sales people are not knowledgeable there.
