Best Buy CEO Brian Dun is claiming that the iPad has taken up to 50 percent of sales from laptops, as more and more people are buying gadgets, rather than high-dollar items.

The iPad is a success. Sure, we have known that for a while — ever since the doors opened the first morning that it was released and people were ripping other people’s fingers off to get a hold of one — but the iPad now appears to be such a success that it is making people turn away from more conventional forms of technology in favor of Apple’s tablet.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Best Buy CEO Brian Dun claimed that the iPad has cannibalized sales from PC based laptops by as much as 50 percent.

“People are willing to disproportionately spend for these devices because they are becoming so important to their lives,” Dun said. “We are really positioning the company to be the place where people can come and see the best of the connected world.”

As the holiday season approaches, Best Buy will continue to heavily stock the iPad, as well as other mobile gadgets, including a wide selection of smartphones and the Amazon Kindle. Best Buy also has plans to create an area in most of its stores to set up demos for the Microsoft Kinect and the Sony Move, as well as other video game accessories, further putting an emphasis on gadgets rather than larger ticket items such as 3D TVs, which have seen a large decline in sales from last year.

“It’s a very different environment now,” Stephen Baker, the chief electronics analyst for NPD said. “The real cool stuff now will be the tablets, e-readers and probably the higher-end digital cameras.”

  1. Joe Blow at 2:36pm 19th October 2010 Sounds like a clumsy sales pitch to me. I'll stick with my Asus.
  2. Karlhaus at 10:29am 18th October 2010 The lack of Flash support, even if it's a crappy technology, limits the widespread usefullness of the iPad. All our websites are iPad capable but we do use flash from time to time (wish we didn't... as it's too slow) See the world's Largest Residential Airpark, Spruce Creek: http://www.7FL6.com http://www.flyinrealty.com

  4. Lothlorian at 2:04pm 22nd September 2010 Think branding... People buy things because they like the brand. It could be the most horrible product known to man but if it has a Brand behind it and there are people who only look at the sticker on the box then it will sell. I read somewhere that Apple is in the top 10 (if not #1) of recognized brands today. All the kiddies who watch ICarly know what computers the actors are really using and it is not a Pear. Best free advertising in the world. Jobs is brilliant but stuck in his own world. I for one do not like his world of DRM and locked devices.
  5. Bow 2 me at 2:45am 21st September 2010 lol all the jealous peoplez hating on THE IPAD OF GREATNESS
  6. breaker27 at 8:03am 20th September 2010 Also he said Laptop sales. What about Netbook sales? I have an IPAD myself it gets used for surfing the internet and playing a couple games on. It is an overpriced toy. I would rather have a netbook over and IPAD anyday.
    1. kingNate at 10:52am 20th September 2010 I agree, I also think that they did not factor in netbook sales growth.. As when i just bought a netbook 2 weeks ago from BB (Yea i was too impatient to wait for one in the mail).. All the netbook were sold out.. I was lucky to get the last samsung netbook.. As i was peeking in the cases looking for what they had in stock.. Guess what the only thing under the cabinets were IPADS... That tells me netbooks are out selling IPads.. (There were alot of ipads too.. and more people were looking at netbooks then were at the 'apple booth' they had set up.. So i think this guy didnt count in other factors.
  7. lairddrambeg at 4:54am 20th September 2010 The impending failure of the iPad is, of course, why Intel is in panic mode, buying up a security company at hugely inflated price and making "just as good" noises about their failing Atom project, which is going to be, like all Intel "technologies", faster than, cooler than and less power hungry than...(repeat ad nausem) any competitive product... uhh, next year. I hear that Otellini is looking for a wet nurse and Nokia is in a mess.
  8. lwell at 6:39pm 19th September 2010 iPad would disrupt the PC market.---- absolutely! Just read the numbers, 'internal estimates showed that the iPad had cannibalized sales from laptop PCs by as much as 50%." 50%!! I love my iPad. It has almost completely replaced my personal computer. For the things I do... It is perfect! For work, the iPad does almost all of the things an average user needs, and with a much much nicer U/I. Easy of use, fast, and efficient. For entertainment, now with one of the top features of iPad --- movie watching, Im totally sucked in enjoying kinds of videos and movies with iPad, though some times need in the help of iPad video converter from iFunia for lack of flash support. Ugggggg!!!!
  9. blahhhh at 2:21pm 18th September 2010 who cares if the iPad starts faster than a PC? are peoples lives THAT fast paced and meaningful that they cant wait an extra minute or two to start their laptop? and every device crashes. thats the beauty of electronics. the iPad is an iFad. wont be here for very long..
  10. John S at 1:19pm 18th September 2010 The iPad was very hyped as usual by Apple. I know that many probably bought it on hype before even asking themselves if it will work for them. Much like the Netbook craze people tend to buy things because others do. But its only after a while will we see if the iPad is really going to replace the laptop or desktop. Or will users reality set in and realize its not all that and a bag of chips.
  11. Brandon at 10:11pm 17th September 2010 this could just be a marketing ploy by best buy to get more people to buy ipads this holiday season
    1. HobDragonDotCom at 8:30am 18th September 2010 Shush Brandon or the Thought Police will kidnap you and shut you up.
  12. jtmk at 8:56pm 17th September 2010 iPad has revolutionized personal computing. Can any one really argue that? It dosn't take a genius to see that. It's great that our laptops are more powerful, but that was the same cry around the birth of the laptop. For "everyday" computer tasks(not the nerd tasks most of us commenters are performing) the iPad is a great tool. I'm not going to write code on it(did see an app for that though;)) but it's great for surfing, checking the weather, sports, email... Some people want one device. That's ok. But for true mobile touchscreen computing, it's all thats out there. You can't really compare it to anything.
    1. Tom Bombadil at 2:03am 18th September 2010 how can anyone seriously say the ipad "revolutionized personal computing" and then list "surfing, checking the weather, sports, email" as the things it's good for... things we could do 10 years ago with commodity hardware? this is a revolution?
  13. ninagosaimas at 7:30pm 17th September 2010 It does depend on your perception. Just wait what will the verizon-google tablet will hold for the future consumers.
  14. Stained at 7:10pm 17th September 2010 You need a gadget to impress yourself? Get some self worth. It just checks your email.
  15. Black Sheep at 2:54pm 17th September 2010 too many sheeps. ipad is garbage.
  16. Tom Bombadil at 2:51pm 17th September 2010 This 50% number is meaningless, just something for the rabid Apple fans to drool over. 50% of how many sales? What percentage of people buy laptops at Best Buy to start with? Maybe BB is just not competitive on laptop pricing, while they remain one of the few brick and mortar outlets where one can acquire the ipad. In otherwords.. the statement means nothing.
  17. Sean-CDtek.com at 2:10pm 17th September 2010 The iPad, while a cool piece of tech, doesn't replace computers in my opinion. It's great for miscellaneous uses and media, but otherwise is pretty much a giant toy.
  18. dave at 12:35pm 17th September 2010 meh. ipad is just an oversized ipod. my asus eeepc 1005ha blows it away. and i don't use windows. linux rules em all!
    1. Alex at 3:28pm 17th September 2010 Hell yeah linux is amazing
    2. bettiepage at 10:17pm 18th September 2010 Yeah, I hear you Linux never crashes, and when a site that has malware or a reported attack site tries to hack into your computer a screen pops up warning you,I use Ubuntu studio for web and video playback of hulu and the like. The ipad is just an oversized pda, here is a thought, I wonder if you could replace the os on a ipad with linux, that would be even better and you would have a touch screen linux systen that can do anything a desktop can do. the only swivel screen laptops I know of are the lenovas. gives you something to think about
  19. Khaled at 5:49am 17th September 2010 http://si.wsj.net/public/resources/images/OB-JZ70... Interesting Comparison Chart
  20. Khaled at 1:42am 17th September 2010 Tablets is another Great opportunities for the Like of Logitech & Belkin & Altec lansing EVEN MORE THAN PCs and Notebooks as those come with already Bundled keyboards and Tabs and mouse and cams and speakers while accessories maker like Logitech managed for 30 Years sell quality products that were very successful hat people add to replace the bundled Generic accessories . in Case of Tablets it is even better these accessories not even bundled and people will need to be productive, you can't hold your arm with a tablet for a long time, you can't tiye a long period of time with touchscreen holding it, you will need nice speaker and HD cams to enjoy the Tablets. As the Logitech CEO was Bullish days ago and said double Digit Growth current year for all category except just gaming and the Tablet new biz for the like IPad and Samasung Galaxy will be an addition to current biz Also as people will not buy new Notebook they will most likely upgrade their old ones with new accessories and perapherals
  21. ioman at 9:44pm 16th September 2010 That's because most people buy laptops to browse the web and check email. The iPad does that at a reasonable price. Oh, and it's faster, easier to use, never crashes (at least not like a PC)...shall I go on?
    1. Pat at 11:47am 17th September 2010 Please go on. I'm sure you have at least 3 more paragraphs of why macs are awesome before your shift starts at Starbucks.
      1. ioman at 11:50am 17th September 2010 Sounds good. BTW you didn't do a great job cleaning the toilets last night there either. I will save a mocha for you, maybe that will wake you up.
        1. Pat at 12:39pm 17th September 2010 That combined with the constant "baaaaaaaaaaaa" from mac people should do it.
          1. ioman at 12:42pm 17th September 2010 I don't get it. What does that mean? Pat. Are you a boy or a girl?
            1. Pat at 1:26pm 17th September 2010 Are you a hipster?
              1. Mike at 2:04pm 17th September 2010 No he's a dumb kid with too much time on his hands and a mommy and daddy that buy him anything he wants. The iPad is a useless child's toy for people who have money burning holes in their pockets. Comparing an iPad to a Laptop is like comparing a shiny new bike to a car and using retarded arguments like "My bike will never run out of gas, so its better than a car." Its a device bought and used by idiots or typical Apple sheep. It does NOTHING. It's a $500+ big screen device that can't even do full web. What a joke.
                1. ioman at 2:17pm 17th September 2010 Well apparently there are a bunch of idiots out there if the iPad is cutting into laptop sales eh? Mike....having trouble getting one? Sorry bro
                2. Pat at 2:21pm 17th September 2010 It's actually pretty awesome for just kicking back and surfing, i.e. checking imdb while watching a movie, facebooking, light app gaming etc. I like Macs. Just don't like Mac attitude. Nobody should be holier than thou about a computer, they're all made in the same sweatshops in China.
                  1. ninagosaimas at 7:25pm 17th September 2010 One thing that we hate about Macs is the price and its OS that you can't tweak unlike Win. If you're paying attention with it. The latest is about that 12-core Apple Mac PRO costing to 5, 000 USD. --- Speechless.
                3. Shawn at 3:25pm 17th September 2010 If you had gone to any tech conference in the last few months, you would have seen that about 15-20% of the folks seem to be sans laptops in favor of ipads. These are people attending conferences, as well as those presenting. A few weeks ago at Agile 2010, the contingent from Microsoft were all carrying ipads rather than laptops (maybe they also had laptops back at their rooms but not at the conference) and at lunch were ribbing the member of their team without an ipad (the contingent was basically the TFS folks). At Appsec 2010 last week there was also a large contingent of folks with ipads and some presenting off of ipads. These are conferences full of developers whom have computers at work and home, laptops and smartphones, and write software using a variety of platforms and languages. In previous years these same folks lugged laptops and backpacks from session to session to take notes and check their email. Now they are sans laptops and backpacks, and instead just have an ipad. I for one, was one of these folks. Why would I want to lug a laptop with me, when I can get most everything I wanted done on my ipad? - In the few cases when I needed to show someone some code or write a small snippit, I used LogMeIn to hit my PC to run VisualStudio., and in the evening I used GoToMeeting to meet with my offshore team ... And I can tell you that people at those conferences with laptops and backpacks were jealous of the people that were not killing their backs and having to plug in every 5 minutes (my ipad lasted through 8 hours of active use everyday taking notes, emailing, and remoting to my computer to code without needed charging). ... . If in a given situation I can get 80-90% of what I need done on an ipad, why would I not prefer to carry that with me instead of lugging around a hot, heavy, and power hungry laptop? The ipad does not replace a computer or a laptop, but rather supplements them. If you don't get that, you are in the same place that most people were 10 years ago when folks questioned why anyone would want mobile internet access on their phones, when they could just use a computer instead. All these devices are not mutually exclusive. I don't have a smartphone instead of a laptop, I have a smartphone in addition to a laptop. By the same token, I don't have a tablet computer instead of a PC, smartphone, or laptop, I have it in addition because it just make more sense for certain use cases.
                  1. Joe Schomoe at 6:00pm 17th September 2010 I go to a couple of game developer groups in San Francisco and people are always demoing their stuff on an iPad; even if it's not made for an iPad they'll show a video of the game. If iPads were cheaper I'd get one; the touch system is the best I've tried. However since they probably won't go down in price significantly, I'll wait for one of the android tablets (what happened to all the ones that were coming out this year?!) prices around $300.
                4. MIkeF at 9:46am 22nd October 2010 Mike Im a pc guy and thats what I thought till I got one for my birthday. Its pretty neat and you may be surprised. b.t.w. It does full web nicely... Mike
    2. Blinders must hurt at 11:56am 17th September 2010 Please do. What is the ipad faster than? Here is a PHONE that is as fast if not faster than the ipad. Oh, and it does more. http://www.htc.com/us/products/evo-sprint?view=1-... Easier to use? To who? I can't stand the Apple OS. I find it counter intuitive. I do consider myself to be someone that does more with a computer than others though. I don't overclock or anything like that, but I know how to solve problems or manipulate software to do what I want it to do. The Apple OS is very limiting to me. Never crashes? Here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HynI1BIgaz8&fe... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aFSsPa-Juw&fe... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blzkRj80qik&fe... http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/ipad/ipad-cr... http://feedback.gowalla.com/gowalla/topics/app_fo... Should I go on? BTW - My PC never crashes because I use it properly. I've never had a blue screen of death. If it freezes then I simply reboot and the problem is fixed. That isn't very often.
      1. ioman at 12:35pm 17th September 2010 Lets start with boot time, exiting apps, starting apps etc. Pretty basic stuff that the iPad is faster than a laptop with eh? ;)
        1. scott at 2:06pm 17th September 2010 My pc starts windows 7 faster from a cold boot than my iphone does (holding down the power button till the red slider shows up) If my pc is sleeping (pretty comparable to the normal off screen on the iphone) my screen comes up just as fast as it takes to press the home button and swipe the slider.
          1. ioman at 2:17pm 17th September 2010 Sorry, your PC takes a minute to boot up. iPad takes under 30 seconds easy.
            1. Matthew the Bluntman at 4:32pm 17th September 2010 A laptop with a SSD takes like 15-30 seconds to boot
              1. ioman at 4:35pm 17th September 2010 And you can get one for $500?
                1. Sameer at 4:43pm 17th September 2010 Try typing 90wpm on your iPad without touch feedback. My Acer Timeline lasts 8 hours on battery, weighs about 3.5 pounds, starts up in 24 seconds, and cost me about $800. You can't do anything with an iPad...you can't even properly multitask. I'd take OS X over it anyday, but def prefer win 7.
            2. Bob at 5:21am 20th September 2010 I'd be more concerned about the hundreds of hours of re-encoding time to enable me to play my media on the iPad, when my $400 netbook can already play it without that horrible, horrible middle step. Oh, and my netbook lasts 8-10 hours on a charge, has a built in stand that functions as a mouse and keyboard, and is nearly as small and light as an iPad.
      2. Jeramiah at 12:48pm 17th September 2010 haha you got owned. Soooo true about start up times etc.
        1. Handy at 6:50pm 17th September 2010 When is this magical ipad the never crashes? My does all the time.
          1. handy at 6:52pm 17th September 2010 is also has horrible auto correction. lol
        2. Otaku stuck in MS at 2:01am 18th September 2010 Wait, what? Start up times? Okay, tell that to my Windows 7 machine that starts up in under 45 seconds. Now, what you're saying MAY apply to OEM builds where manufacturers love to cram their 'junkware' into their products. I'm not an Apple fanboy, but it's not like I'm boycotting their products either. I just think they're all too damn expensive in comparison to PCs (even those with better specs in comparison)
