BlackBerry CEO says iPhone’s interface looks dated

Consider the proverbial gauntlet thrown. In an interview with The Australian Financial Review, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins claimed that, in this world of rapidly released smartphones, Apple, the once leader in the industry, will find itself left behind as its competitors improve the quality – and affordability – of rival devices.

“History repeats itself again I guess … the rate of innovation is so high in our industry that if you don’t innovate at that speed you can be replaced pretty quickly. The user interface on the iPhone, with all due respect for what this invention was all about is now five years old,” said Heins.

But Heins isn’t looking down on Apple. In fact, he said “Apple did a fantastic job in bringing touch devices to market. There is a reason why they were so successful, and we actually have to admit this and respect that.”

But with releases like the recent Samsung Galaxy S4, and news of the new affordable Nokia smartphones, there are many more options for people to choose from. And, in the wake of a failed attempt to tackle the tablet market, Heins feels that the new Blackberry 10 devices will put the company back in the game. And, with an expected 100,000 available apps by the time the new line launches in the U.S. this week, there’s a chance the company could actually begin a real comeback.

Without a doubt, apps play a pivotal role in the success of any phone, an area that BlackBerry was sorely lacking in prior to the new release. But another benefit BlackBerry has over most other smartphones is the ability to multitask; whereas the iPhone can only run one app at a time, BlackBerry allows users to run multiple apps simultaneously.

Despite the benefits BlackBerry may have on paper, now is a make or break time for the company. It still has to convince consumers that it deserves to survive. Many have speculated that the company has been on the verge of collapse, but Heins denies it. In fact, he confirmed that a customer – who cannot be revealed due to a confidentiality agreement – recently agreed to purchase one million handsets.

For now, the company is going to focus much of its effort on marketing in Australia, which Heins says is one of its top 10 markets. We’re expecting to see an equally large effort here, once the devices launch in the United States.

So will Heins’ predictions come to light? Will Apple lose its stronghold on the smartphone market? The coming months will no doubt be eventful and show us just how the industry will change. But one thing is for certain: if BlackBerry is to succeed, there no doubt needs to be a change in the eyes of consumers.

Best Black Friday iPhone deals 2022: What to expect
Best Black Friday iPhone Deals

With the launch of the iPhone 14, Apple fans who want to enjoy even the slightest discount when buying the latest model, and those who don't mind buying an older iPhone for the largest possible savings, are looking forward to this year's Black Friday deals. The shopping holiday isn't arriving for several weeks, but given the popularity of Apple's smartphones, it will be wise to start your preparations for retailers' iPhone deals on Black Friday. We've got the answers to some of the most important questions from shoppers who are planning to buy an iPhone, and we'll provide more tips to maximize Black Friday iPhone deals as the event draws closer.
When will the Black Friday iPhone deals start in 2022?
Black Friday, which always happens after Thanksgiving, will fall on Nov. 25 this year. We're expecting retailers to offer their biggest discounts for iPhones on that day. However, you have the option of finishing your shopping early, because Black Friday iPhone deals will likely begin as soon as Nov. 21, which is the Monday of that week. The bargain prices will hit their peak on Black Friday, with leftovers available over the weekend through Cyber Monday. It's a good idea to buy a new iPhone as early as you can during Black Friday week, so that you won't fall victim to depleted stocks on the model that you're looking to purchase.

While waiting for retailers to roll out their Black Friday iPhone deals, you should check out our choice for the best iPhone to buy. With the arrival of the iPhone 14, its predecessor, the iPhone 13 and its variants, are expected to have their prices slashed for the shopping holiday. You might want to make use of this time to understand the smartphone's features, and maybe even take a look at older models if you want to enjoy even bigger savings.
Which retailer has the best Black Friday iPhone deals?
Apple participates in Black Friday sales, but only by offering gift cards. If you want to buy an iPhone without paying full price, you'll have to look at the Black Friday iPhone deals that will come from major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy. It's too early to determine the seller that will offer the largest discounts, but they probably won't be too different from each other. That's why it's recommended to focus your search for your new iPhone on your preferred retailer, so that you'll be familiar with the online platform.

Hurray! Android phones don’t look like the iPhone anymore
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Flip 3 together, showing their partially folded displays.

No matter how many smartphones are critiqued for being boring and dull, one thing remains true -- smartphones released over the past year look far more distinct than ever before. Whether it be crazy colors, crazy cameras, or just crazy materials, high-end Android phones have never looked more different. It's a far cry from the day Samsung wanted to be Apple, or when HTC launched a smartphone that was a dead ringer for the then-new iPhone, and it exposes the critique that smartphones all look the same as a fallacy.
More expressive hardware
In 2022, it's different. Walk into any phone store and pick up a flagship Android phone, and you'll find something different. From the choice of materials to colors, there's a lot of variety that you wouldn't find before. The time Android phone makers used to slavishly follow the iPhone has gone. A lot of companies are striking out on their own and leaning unapologetically into their own novel designs.

OnePlus 10 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro Max
The back of the OnePlus 10 Pro.

The OnePlus 10 Pro is the first smartphone OnePlus has released since its merger with Oppo, and it finds the Chinese tech firm combining the long-running strengths of the OnePlus series with some Oppo-centric software features. This means it treats users to a lovingly designed phone with a crystalline display, powerful internals, a versatile camera, and fast charging, while also including some operating system quirks taken from Oppo's ColorOS software. Taken together, they make for a distinctive experience, and one of the best you're likely to find on an Android device this year.

Of course, the OnePlus 10 Pro is saturated with potential rivals, with the iPhone 13 Pro Max probably being the most fearsome on the iOS side of the equation. The latter is arguably as close to a perfect phone as you're going to find in 2022, offering sharp looks, an inviting display, lightning-fast performance, a great camera, a strong battery, and effortless software. The OnePlus, therefore, has its work cut out if it wants to beat the iPhone in a head-t0-head comparison test, which we detail below.
