Chip Claims to Neutralize Phone Radiation

Omega Pharma has announced its E-Waves phone chip, which it claims neutralizes potentially hazardous radiation emitted by mobile phones.

At a press event today, Belgian health product company Omega Pharma unveiled something it’s calling the E-Waves Phone Chip, a product the company claims neutralizes potentially harmful radiation emitted by mobile phones. Using interference technology, the chip aims to block electromagnetic radiation emitted by mobile devices, particularly in the range between 3 MHz and 10 GHz.

According to Omega Pharma CEO Marc Coucke, research is increasingly showing a link between significant mobiel phone use and the growth of tumors, and cites reports from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) warning of possible risks from mobile phone’s EM radiation. Radiation from mobile phones has also been lined to headaches, loss of concentration, and producing heat within the body, although the general medical community has yet to embrace a link between radiation from mobile phones and any adverse health conditions—with the notable exception of contact allergies with materials used in some phones’ cases.

Omega Pharma is rolling out the first 30,000 E-Waves chips in Belgian pharmacies December 10 at a price of €38.95, and plans to introduce the product in other countries soon. Omega Pharma mainly sells over-the-counter healthcare products in western Europe, where it competes with the likes of Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, and Procter & amp; Gamble. Omega Pharma is the largest stand-alone OTC healthcare product company in the world, and claims to be the 11th largest in the world.

  1. Carl at 1:26pm 9th December 2008 I don't know if the radio frequency emissions of cellphones are actually harmful, but I doubt that the Omega Pharma device actually "neutralizes" harmful radiation. Cellphones operate on specific frequencies, and the transmission power used is based on the signal strength received by the cellphone tower when the cellphone transmits. The Omega Pharma device can't alter the frequencies, and even if it could the cellphone wouldn't work. It can't alter the transmitted power much, or the cellphone tower would instruct the cellphone to increase its transmitted power to compensate for the signal attenuation. So until Omega Pharma can present some convincing rationale for why their device works, and some convincing evidence that it actually does work, I would categorize the Omega Pharma device as a quack product.
  2. Kevin Bush\ at 11:57am 9th December 2008 I've no idea if cell phones actually cause or can cause cancer due to radiation, but this is a pretty cool development. The fact that they can reduce or negate the radiation using a chip is pretty positive news... assuming the harmful radiation even exists. Could just be a faux solution, acting as a placebo I suppose, but who knows. If it does what they say it does and the harmful radiation exists, then this is excellent news.
