Cingular has announced it will use RealNetworks' Helix OnlineTV as the technology behind the mobile video service it plans to debut by the end of 2005.

Cingular Wireless, the largest U.S. mobile operator, announced today that it plans to use RealNetworks’ Helix OnlineTV to provide video programming to cell phone users on its 3G network when it rolls out the service in some markets by the end of 2005.

RealNetworks already provides a service called rTV to some Cingular and Sprint Nextel subscribers, but Helix OnlineTV promises to operate on a much larger scale, providing high-quality streaming video and audio. Cingular’s VP of data services Jim Ryan said, "The key toward making these new services appealing to customers is providing simple and fast access to the specific content that satisfies their individual interests. RealNetworks’ expertise in streaming audio and video, along with the flexibility of their Helix OnlineTV platform will help enable Cingular to give our customers the fastest access possible to the audio and video content they care most about."

RealNetworks will host and stream the mobile video content to Cingular subscribers. Cingular hasn’t released any information on what its mobile video service will cost, or what content will be available.

  1. fungku at 11:39pm 30th September 2005 I still dont see the benefit of this other than the initial wow factor. Watching video/audio will totally kill your battery. Its much easier to burn minutes (hey, maybe thats what they want you to do!) Plus you'd definitely need to get the unlimited data transfers, which on cingular the last time i checked was $20/mo. Definitely not worth it for me.
