I was in Lithuania, trying not to get lost, tired from an 18 hour bus ride to get there, and feeling sick because I drank kvass without knowing what it was, when I was attempting to get on the local transportation. I was using my ipod touch to check wifi to lead my friend and me in the right direction. I guess I was taking too long and the driver shut the door on me. My bag was halfway out. I tried to pull my backpack through as she sped off and my ipod went flying and the screen shattered. Saddest day because I lost my mode of communication to the states for the rest of the summer (and I was stuck listening to bad European radio).

I could not find where the winners were posted so I am not sure if this contest is over or not so I am going to leave a comment just in case since I REALLY need a case for my Ipad.
Honestly I have not had any horror stories to tell (thank goodness). I am sure I will before long. Some of the comments I read were just sad I hope nothing like it ever happens to me.
Thanks for the great giveaway.
I dont have a clue either when this contest ends. lets wait it out like pros.
I am typing this from my 4th 32gb iPad 3/new IPad, the first iPad I broke was not my fault I lent it to my brother for a trip overseas so he could take pictures with it, he said he would buy a cover for it but he didn’t and while he was walking down the street he dropped it and the screen smashed and when he came back I tried to get it fixed but they said they ” you can’t replace the screen”. Second iPad was not my fault again, my 4 year old cousin thought it would be fun to see if an iPad was waterproof(face palm). The third iPad I wanted to take real good care of so I bought a cheap case in store and bought a really nice spigen case a few days later off the net while I was transferring them I dropped it and it smashed, now I have my fourth iPad and I really don’t want to break this one.
omg your on your fourth i just got one hope i have better luck than you. Dang i feel so sorry for you. Electronics what can you do….
I had a 2010 Macbook Pro. which I spent over $2000 on. One day, I showed my siblings a hilarious video from youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89od8TqQBIs). Doubting the strength of a human fist, my younger brother (jokingly) hit my MBP screen and…I began to hear strange noises from it. As expected, the screen was no longer working properly, and it costed me somewhere between $500-700 to repair it as it was out of the 1 year warranty.
Thats horrible man. These electronics cost more money to fix th
en to buy in the first place. :( …
I just got a screen shield to put on my iPhone so i took my case off and put it on a table, when I went to go put this screen shield on my hand came over and hit it off the table accidentally. you can see what happens next the phone fell on the floor and broke the screen. On my attempt to try and save my phone from getting scratched I accidentally cracked the screen and made it much worse then some little scratches.
Now I am much more careful !!
thats sad too wow these stories can make a reality tv show. “How I broke my Electronics” LOL
I had just bought the new 15″ macbook pro in 2009, and brought it to school for a presentation. It was wrapped up in an incase sleeve, and then put in my bag. Foolishly enough, I left my bag at our common deck while I went to the bathroom, and upon coming back, my friends were playing hot potato with it (without knowing what was in it). As soon as I yelled to stop, all of their hands went down and I watched as my bag hit the pavement. I swear my heart skipped a beat. Ran over to it, opened up the sleeve, and wouldn’t you know it, the aluminum casing took a hit right to the corner, bent a few inches in, and left a nice gap for me to look clear into the cpu. Doesnt stop there though– the corner of the lcd spiderwebbed all the way up. Estimation repair costs? $1050
On vacation and my Blackberry falls screen first on the ground. The entire screen was a spiderweb like lattice of broken glass. My wife suggested packing tape and after a trip to Kmart, the screen was covered with two pieces of packing tape for the next 6 months, until the contract was up.
I bought my first Mac in 2008 and I took it to the library with a string bag. When I came back home I held the laptop inside the bag with one hand to get my keys and the funny part is that I held the bag with the string facing down and the laptop felt on the cement. The laptop was bent on the right hand side, so I couldn’t use the super drive. The day it happened was the day I bought the laptop, so it happened on the first day I had the computer.
Back in 2005 or 2006, my parents bought me a PSP, the fat one.
Fast forward to 2010, after passing my PSP among my friends as I have not been spending time with it, I somehow felt the need to play my PSP once again. It was God of War: Ghost of Sparta. After many, many hours of button-mashing and a little bit of puzzle solving, I finally completed the game.
Just when I was about to start with the side-quests — and I kid you not — my PSP blacked out. I frantically searched for a power source to plug it to the charger — kind of like a defibrillator. Sadly, the green light of well-being and power could only blink weakly, as if struggling to stay lit. After several desperate attempts to revive it, not even a faint glow could be seen from the LED.
Many attempts of fixing it failed. Doctors — I mean, repairmen even claimed that they found dried up chocolate drink in the circuits. Any reason fell on deaf ears because every person told me that it couldn’t be fixed.
In the process of mourning and grieving for my beloved handheld gaming device, tragedy struck again. I left my fairly new Sony Ericsson C901 in my pocket as I threw my pants in the laundry pile. When I realised my phone was missing, it was already too late. People will tell you that phones dunked in water can be saved, but not many has had the luck of having their phones drown in a seemingly harmless water tornado of suds that cleans fabric but inhibits electronic devices.
I considered getting another PSP and slightly cheaper phone than the high-end ones in the market at that point of time, but I was struck with the idea of just getting an iPhone, as if someone had planted that idea in me through a dream. In the end, I did get an iPhone 4, but I still miss being able to play God of War and take pictures with a xenon flash.
That sucks man my old psp messed up because the buttons got pushed in.
Fixable?
yeah mine is fixable, but im very lazy. lol
Had gotten a new phone one day and had it on my belt in a holster. Was running across a street and had to suddenly stop because of traffic. Well, my phone didn’t stop.
It methodically slid perfectly onto a lane where a bus ran right over it and the phone literally exploded into hundreds of pieces.
Yeah, that wasn’t cool…
Can anything good happen when a phone drops down under a commercial grade lawn mower? Yeah that’s me. Not too mention I had a neighbor burn down my townhouse a few years ago.
iPad slipped out of my (freshly washed) hands while exiting the restroom. It landed screen first on the tile floor. The sound made me want to cry!
Forgive the mental image but my tale of woe can be succinctly summed up in four words: don’t text and pee.
Oops … just realized how that looked. I dropped my smartphone in the toilet, not peed on it.
Thank you for the clarification, haha.
lol
Sorry to say that I really don’t have a sad story about hardware failursa because I take care of my equipment. I worked closely with someone in the same job and he would destroy 3 computers, 5 phones and 2 suitcases before i needed to change even one. I do use good protective products like the hardbook series s case bur a little careful attention goes a long way.
My most devastating story of technological destruction huh… Well it all started out when I was playing a hardcore video game that required me playing everyday since I was ranked #5 in the world on the leaderboards. So while i was in the zone of playing and competing to get to the #1 ranked player on the world in this game. My console aka my PS3 froze and made a weird noise then kinda blow up from over-heating. (MUST OF BEEN MY INTENSE GAMING) Once I witnessed this happening I was like Omg what am I going to do because the system not only blow up, but the power cable started to get on fire. So I rushed over to the kitchen grabbed the fire extinguisher and put out the socket and my PS3. That day had to be the worse day in my life since it was the only hobby I liked to do in my spare time. The next morning i asked my wife can I buy a new one and she said only if I sell my other consoles to make the difference for a new PS3 at gamestop. So a week later I had to sell my PSP, NINTENDO DS XL, and alot of my prizes all time favorite video games, just because I wanted my ps3 back fast to try and regain my worldwide rank status.( I’m such a addict I know) But the at the end of the day I technology failed me and I lost alot of money for either the circuits frying or because of my PS3 being overused that night really made me sad but at the same time I’m glad the house didn’t burn up or worse I could of been dead. (The moral of the story is never play 24/7 on a video game). Nuff said…
I want my old PS3 those were good times we had. :(
I miss my PS3 I lst all my data and games I brought and downloaded as well as my gamesaves. :(
about two months ago my band and i were on tour in a stripped down in a ford econoline. aside from having the new demo’s we had recently recorded using the ipad it also had our itinerary, all our upcoming show info, all the new lyrics i’d written since we left home, our everything. anyway i, as per usual was sitting in the front passenger seat working on a bridge for one of our new tracks, suddenly as we were in the middle lane some piece of s*** in the right hand lane who somehow didnt notice the van directly next to him or the car ahead of him in his lane speeds up to change lanes perhaps thinking if he goes fast and with enough precision he can cut past us and not hit us or the car in front of him. big surprise, he’s no james bond or even a person with normal driving capabilities. in the midst of me trying to brace myself as he first lightly skimmed the van, about to smash into the car in front of him then slams back to the front end of our van like a damn pin ball the ipad flys out my window to the loving shoulder of i-95. we did eventually retrieve the once beautiful all in one digital tour manager/ipad, now shattered and slightly bent. that day was probably the worst one yet, especially since we immediately pulled over to check the various damages he just kept driving.
Ouch. Hopefully some things were backed up to the cloud?
This anguishing tale is happening as we speak. My original iPad, in perfect health and guilty of no crime, is on death row and waiting to walk the green mile. We hoped (and expected) to enjoy many years together until Apple, setting a legal precedent, converted a life sentence to execution (sniff). Our time together, although now limited, is precious with no regrets. Perhaps instead of an urn I will be to able to at least dress my companion in style in a Hardbook S Series Case.
May your precious device rest in peace, I hope it gets the burial it deserves
Thank you, sir. Trying to keep a stiff upper lip.
I went to the Mall at a watch repair place to have a new battery installed in my car Key Remote. The technician informed me I could return in half an hour. I kindly responded “I don’t mind waiting around.” As I observed him, He easily opened the housing, then used a metal pick which look similar to a Dentist or a Doctors surgical tool and was prying the battery off the bracket which I saw was too much force. Had my suspicions, since he continued like nothing was damaged. Paid him $14.00 afterwards to replace a DL 2032 battery which probably only cost $2. After a couple months the remote was dead, so I put on the shelf since I had a spare. After three years passed, decided to check that original remote. I mustered the courage to look into the car’s manual to see how to open the housing and to my surprise discovered the bracket that secures the battery in place has two terminals that was soldered to the circuit board and one of the terminal solder was pried off (broken contact); it was at this moment my jaws fell. Reminiscing that day when the technician was prying the battery off, It occurred to me he purposely or accidently broke the solder connection and knew the whole time. It dawned on me why he had a big smile when I was paying him. Now that I understand what he was so happy about ! I was upset, I went to the storage to pickup my soldering iron & solder wire. It was a bit nerve racking because the electronic components were close together and the circuit board was tiny. Was afraid the soldering iron might fry one of the adjacent electronic components. Ultimately the soldering job was a success and I’m now using my original key remote. It’s kind of a horror to have a battery replaced to discover they’re doing more damage to your gadget intentionally. It’s a good thing I didn’t return to that same place when the remote died. The lesson here, when you want something fixed right , you have to do it yourself, If it’s not too complicated.
Once my little cousin threw my gameboy color out the window of my 6th story apartment. That’s what I get for trying to be a nice =P. Needless to say, I didn’t get to play Pokemon for a while.
I feel your pain, I had several Game Gears destroyed by a younger sibling, SEVERAL =/
…come to think of it, what happened to MY Game Gear? She must have got to it when I wasn’t looking.
I had an iPhone 3G. It was a great phone and as it happens the phone has a lot of sentimental value. Myths phone holds the last text messages from sisiter before she was killed in a hit and run accident 3 yeas ago. I dropped the phone one day while getting out of my ambulance at work and the screen shattered into what I can only assume was several million pieces. I ordered a new screen from eBay to replace my broken glass but during the home repair I busted the LCD screen. So now I had to order and wait forr a new LCD. Eventually I did get the phone together but the screen still likes to blank on me on occasion. It always comes back though. This will be the iPhone I never get rid of.
I stored all of my old computers and video game systems in my parent’s basement as I live in an apartment and have limited space. A few years back a hurricane came up the east coast and dumped some rain on us for a couple days. Needless to say the basement flooded and took my Commodore 64, disk drive and tape drive, my NES with the zapper and R.O.B., an Atari 2600, Sega Genesis and Super NES as well as 100s of games and software. I was quite sad since my childhood toys were terminated and the only condolence I got from my parents was that I “should have taken my crap with me”.
That’s a rough one. I’ve had a few basement floods take out some of my possessions but never any tech related items
When my wife and I first got our first Apple product a few months ago, I was extremely excited. We purchased the newest iPad and and a Mac book Air. My wife was a bit skeptical of buying something so “expensive” and unnecessary. I haven’t felt that happy like that. It brought good old memories of me going to the nearby candy store and getting TWO different types of candy (parents were strict). Anyways we got it and really enjoyed our experience with it (14 or so hours). A next day we took a flight to Washington for a job presentation. Early in the morning, my wife left to get some advice from a friends who had experience using Apple products in business. She got back later than I had expected. When she opened the door with that worrisome face, I knew something got broken, stolen, lost and or killed. My wife and her friend apparently met at a nearby park and got caught up in talking, when forgetting the bag when leaving. When they got back there, it was in the IN the fountain. My wife assumed she “accidentally” pushed it in the water without noticing. Anyways, we didn’t have enough time to schedule an appointment at the genius bar and do my presentation. I didn’t backup my documents, it seems, as I couldn’t retrieve my documents and presentation. I came empty handed with a couple of data sheets from a backup source and made it the best I could. One thing led to another, until I was let go, as this was a huge project that I needed to be prepared for. The laptop and iPad were later replaced, yet I still was let go =). I now have a even better job than before , yet I learned two valuable things: keep your electronics with you and first presentations are the most important. It would be nice to show my wife both of those things in getting this for my iPad. Thanks Digital Trends!
When my wife go pregnant with our first child we expected the mood swings, the protruding belly, and all the stereotypical difficulties that come with pregnancy. What we did not expect was that it would turn her into a frantic klutz. While at work a few months ago my wife used the “facilities.” During this time she took her phone out of her back pocket trying to make sure it doesn’t accidentally get tossed into the bowl of twirling doom. What she didn’t realize was that when she tried to save her phone by preventing its potential death, she sealed its fate. Yes, while flushing, she dropped the phone right in. Our nearest Apple store is a three hour drive away and lucky for her I was going at the end of that week. Once there Apple told me that I could replace the phone and add AppleCare+ to it for $50 more then just the replacement. I chose this option. A week after my trip to the store I was walking past a pile of sheets destined for the washing machine when I suddenly felt the floor buzz near my feet. Curiously I sifted through the sheets only to find my wife’s week old phone laying dead in the center. A part of me feels as though this new phone knew what was in its immediate future and was grasping at its last leg for life. Moral of the story is, if you or your significant other is expecting a child, be sure to have an accidental warranty plan. You may need to use it more then once.
When my wife got* pregnant
There should be an edit option.
There is an “edit option” for pregnancy, but this is not the forum to discuss it.
