Dell is updating its Dell AximTM X5 handheld computer with Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 and, will offer a specially developed version of McAfee’s VirusScan PDA for the Axim X5.

Windows Mobile 2003 software for Pocket PCs, the new brand name for Pocket PC 2003, makes it easy for customers to access wireless networks with their Dell Axim handhelds, delivers excellent e-mail and instant messaging experiences and supports powerful multimedia applications. McAfee’s VirusScan PDA provides robust protection against computer viruses on the Dell Axim X5.

New Axim customers will receive units based on Windows Mobile 2003 and can register for 30 days of free McAfee VirusScan PDA, or order a 12-month subscription with their systems for $19.00. Existing Axim customers in North America and Europe can purchase a Windows Mobile 2003 upgrade with companion CD from Dell for $29, and can order McAfee VirusScan PDA via the companion CD.

Priced at $268, the Dell Axim X5 Basic configured with an optional TrueMobile 1180 802.11b wireless CompactFlash card automatically detects and can easily connect to Wi-Fi networks. Access to Wi-Fi networks is increasingly found at public areas such as coffee shops, airports and college campuses.

Productivity and entertainment enhancements found in Windows Mobile 2003 include first-rate synchronization of e-mail and calendar items between PDAs and personal computers. Windows Mobile 2003 incorporates the latest version of Windows Media Player for high-definition video playback. Microsoft’s Pictures application allows users to store, edit and display digital photos on the brilliant QVGA display, transforming the Axim X5 into a stylish, light, easy-to-carry photo album.

Dell Axim X5 handhelds are packed with built-in features and deliver great value, with prices starting at $199.
