Move over Angry Birds, it’s Draw Something that’s dominating the mobile game scene now.
In only 50 days, the Pictionary-style game has trounced the competition to become the fastest-growing original mobile game ever.
According to a Venture Beat report, the game has now been downloaded onto iOS and Android devices over 50 million times in the short time it’s been available.
The company behind Draw Something, New York-based OMGPOP, was bought by social gaming giant Zynga last month for a reported $180 million. The Words With Friends creator will certainly be glad they got in early, as the company must be worth a whole lot more by now.
Thanks to its immense popularity, Draw Something, which allows players to compete against friends and strangers around the world, is believed to generate about $250,000 a day for OMGPOP/Zynga. Both paid and free versions of the game exist, with the paid one currently available at the special price of 99 cents instead of the usual $1.99. The free one is supported by ads.
Venture Beat also reported some stats to go with Wednesday’s news: for example, over six billion drawings have been created since the game launched in February. And whereas just three drawings per second were created on the first day it became available, that number now stands at 3,000.
Starfish, pregnant, hangman, six pack, and boom box are reported to be the most popular words used in the game, while the least popular happens to be latrine.
When news of Zynga’s purchase of OMGPOP was announced, OMGPOP CEO Dan Porter wrote that the company’s ethos was to create games which gave people “a place to play, meet and make friends.” The social aspect of the game has evidently helped to spread the word about this simple yet addictive game, which now tops Apple’s App Store charts.
The two companies apparently share a vision of connecting the world through games — it seems like they’re well on the way to achieving it with Draw Something alone.
