EVE Online MMORPG demoed on Tegra 2-powered mobile devices

A mobile device-based client is the dream of every MMORPG-loving player. Why spend time launching birds like cannonballs at structures built out of unusual materials when you could instead be grinding your way through World of Warcraft‘s Azeroth? The exceedingly popular MMO developed by Blizzard Entertainment has actually been made to run on iPads and even iPhones, but not with any kind of official support from the game’s creator. CCP Games, the developer and overseer of the space-based EVE Online MMO universe, has beaten Blizzard to the punch on that front… sort of.

At its EVE Fanfest, held this past weekend, CCP showed off a stripped-down version of the game running on Tegra 2-powered tablets and smartphones. Edge reports that the demo showed “an instantly recognizable, and highly detailed, EVE ship rendered in realtime along with the familiar EVE [user interface].” It wasn’t a full version of the game, but CCP made a point of stating that it is set within the game’s single-universe architecture.

“We’ve been working a lot on the backend to enable Eve over http,” CCP chief technology officer Halldór Fannar said at a press briefing. “The problem we run into is that a lot of people seem to equate that with a web browser. It doesn’t necessarily mean that – it means any of these devices can start extracting data and also writing data back. So it opens up the possibility of having dedicated applications for doing market transactions, managing your skill queue and, for instance, fitting your spaceship.”

The demo was actually what Fannar called an “exploratory project,” developed with NVIDIA to “see what quality of graphics we could get on these devices.” The Tegra 2 is a mobile dual-core CPU/GPU, one of the most powerful on the market. Even if the ultimate intent is to bring something less than the full game experience to mobile devices, the demo illustrated that the potential is there for the visuals at least.

Fannar explained that the visual horsepower isn’t necessary for what CCP is planning (at the moment, at any rate), but it can’t hurt either. “[For] trading on the [in-game] market or managing your skill queue, you don’t need much in the way of graphics – but we’re a very visually oriented company and players are really attached to the [ship] models. It would be far more meaningful for them to see their assets.”

EVE Online is getting a multiplayer shooter spinoff

During EVE Fanfest 2022, CCP Games London revealed that a multiplayer first-person shooter spinoff of the popular MMO EVE Online is in the works. 
The game remains untitled, and details on this new game are still scarce as CCP Games says it "wants to show you rather than tell you how they have evolved this concept." All it's saying right now is that the game will be an innovative "online tactical FPS" set in New Eden. So far, just one piece of concept art has been released that features gun-toting soldiers walking through water.

As even Gundam is getting in on the multiplayer first-person shooter spinoff craze, it's not too surprising that EVE Online would follow suit. Hopefully, it emulates the best of the genre while still having a unique EVE Online flair to it. This is actually CCP Games' third attempt at this concept.
CCP Games released Dust 514 for PS3 in 2013, but that game shut down in 2016. The developer then revealed a shooter called Project Nova before scrapping that project and allowing its London studio to start conceptualizing this current game. Hopefully, this project does not meet the same fate. 
Thankfully, this wasn't the only thing revealed during EVE Fanfest 2022. We learned that CCP Shanghai is working on a free-to-playx strategy game for mobile that will enter player testing later this year. EVE Online is also getting Microsoft Excel collaboration (yes, really), so keeping track of all of EVE Online's data will be easier.
CCP Games London's first-person shooter is still without a release date, but the studio has confirmed that the game is currently ramping up preproduction development.
