Fuel For Your Mobile Phone

Fuel For Your Mobile Phone

Motorola and Angstrom Power have developed a fuel cell-powered mobile phone, with the cell lasting twice as long as lithium batteries.

We’re used to discussions of fuel cells in vehicles and other, large technology. But in a mobile phone?   Well, yes. Motorola and Canadian-basedAngstrom Power claim they’ve produced the world’s first fuel cell mobile phone. The companies claim that the cell doesn’t alter the shapeor size of the phone, that it lasts twice as long as a lithium battery and – here’s the best bit for many – it recharges in just 10 minutes, according to a Vnunet story.   Given that one of the leading complaints among users is the relatively low battery time in handheld devices, this could be a major leap forward, andthe relationship between Angstrom and Motorola should mean that Motorola is at the cutting edge.   "As consumer demand for smartphones and multimedia devices grows, so does the need forpower solutions that enable ‘always on’ experiences," said Jerry Hallmark, manager for energy system technologies in Motorola’s mobile devices business. "Motorola is working with Angstromto develop fuel cell technology that will support the increasing energy demands of next generation devices."
