Glu, Activision Take Call of Duty Mobile

Glu Mobile announced today that it has entered into an exclusive agreement with game publisher Activision to bring the Call of Duty video game franchise to mobile phones.

The Call of Duty first-person combat franchise is based around World War II European theatre scenarios; in various editions of the game, players take on the roles of a member of The Big Red One infantry division, a gunner on a B-17 bomber, soldiers in the Normandy Breakout campaign, and many more scenarios. The Call of Duty franchise has always prided itself on presenting intense, realistic combat scenarios and multiplayer capabilities to PC and console gamers.

“We’re thrilled to engage in an exclusive partnership with Activision and bring a new Call of Duty title to mobile gamers worldwide,” said Greg Ballard, Glu CEO and president. “The Call of Duty franchise has brought new meaning and innovation to the first person action category and is a great addition to Glu’s portfolio of award-winning games.”

If you’re concerned about how long it will be before mobile phone are desperately trying to shoot German soldiers or outflank a gun battery without smashing into you while they’re driving…Glu says Call of Duty should be available on major wireless carriers later this year.

Google will soon ban third-party call-recording apps from the Play Store. First highlighted by a developer of an affected app, Google made the announcement in a Google Play policy update that becomes effective on May 11. Once in force, developers who want to submit apps to the Play Store will no longer be able to use the Android Accessibility API to record calls, killing the utility of call-recording apps on Android.

Google hasn't allowed third-party call recording on Android officially for years now. It's no surprise as call recording is a legal minefield, with different countries and even states having their own rules. If you're using a first-party phone app, you'll notice that this feature appears or disappears depending on where your phone thinks you are, and third-party recording apps hacking onto the company Accessibility API were one way to get around this.
