The purchase of Palm by HP gives the Slate a potential new OS, but that could delay the unit until next year.

Apple might have one less potential iPad killer to worry about this year. With the purchase of Palm by HP for cool $1.2 billion, plans for the Slate are suddenly up in the air.

According to the Business Insider, HP has become evasive about when- or if- it will still release the HP Slate. When asked about the Slate, HP’s Todd Bradley said that “We haven’t made roadmap announcements.” Bradley also said that they would expand on details on the Slate once the Palm deal was concluded, which is not expected for a few months at least, sometime in HP’s third quarter, which ends at the end of July.

Many feel that the purchase of Palm was partly to increase HP’s presence in the smartphone market, but also as a measure to end reliance on Microsoft’s OS. Palm’s webOS is a perfect fit on that measure, but attempting to refit the Slate with an unfamiliar OS could take months, and with the purchase still in the legal stages, it could be next year before we see a Slate – all assuming HP does not scrap the project entirely in favor of something new.

The inclusion of the webOS is not necessarily a given, but it is unlikely that HP would purchase Palm and neglect one of the few high points of the beleaguered smartphone maker. If the Slate goes ahead with the Microsoft OS, it would likely be a single model that might not appeal to consumers that could soon find themselves without support from HP. If webOS does become the OS for the Slate, the change in development could take months to fully integrate.

So it looks like Apple might have one less challenger to fend off this year, but we won’t know for sure until the Palm purchase is concluded later this summer.

  2. MatthewStone at 2:29pm 29th April 2010 I don't think this Palm buyout has any bearing on HP's Slate device coming out this year. HP spent several years designing a Windows TouchSmart UI and an Intel Atom based device. WebOS does not run on Intel Atom chips at all. A webOS tablet would require HP to start from scratch with an ARM based design. All of that R&D and the last several months of marketing on the HP Slate would be completely wasted. Instead HP will put out both Windows and webOS tablets. HP has made it clear that they are not abandoning Windows.

What HP does in the long term will depend upon what the market demands. I think this is where HP has screwed themselves. While competitors like Dell and Lenovo get a headstart with their Android tablets and mobile phones HP will be selling an unpopular proprietary OS that has very few applications and developers. I say that as a Pre owner who thinks webOS is good especially at multitasking, but realistically doesn't have much of a chance against Google's Android and Microsoft's Windows. Those operating systems have a much bigger developer community and will be available on devices from every hardware manufacturer on the planet. webOS will only be supported by HP.
  3. MatthewStone at 1:38pm 29th April 2010 I'm sorry. I own a Palm Pre and I like it a lot, but the apps for it suck. The operating system is good for a mobile phone, but not for a computer. I would much rather have a Windows 7 computer than a webOS computer. A webOS tablet would just be a novelty toy, you wouldn't be able to do a fraction of the things you can do with a Windows 7 tablet.
