Intel’s Clover Trail chip set to appear at Windows 8 tablet showcase on September 27

Intel has started inviting members of the press to what it’s calling a “showcase” of Intel-based Windows 8 tablets. The event will take place at the end of the month and the guest list is suitably illustrious, with executives from Acer, Asus, Samsung, Dell, HP, ZTE and Lenovo all expected to attend.

While we’ve already seen tablets running Windows 8 from the majority of these manufacturers, ZTE has yet to show off its contribution to Microsoft’s latest operating system, and it could do so on the day.

ZTE is best known for its mobile phones, and although it has produced a few tablets in the past, they’ve all used ARM architecture and Android. A Windows 8 RT tablet would seem like the best fit for them, except they’re hardly likely to announce one of those at an Intel event.

However, ZTE became one of the first manufacturers to produce a smartphone running Intel’s Medfield platform with the Grand X IN, beating Motorola by more than a month, plus the Chinese company has used Intel chips in its network hardware for sometime, so the pair have a good working relationship.

Along with all the tablet talk, Intel has promised to reveal some more details on its Clover Trail processors. Clover Trail is the codename for the next generation of low-power Atom chips, designed with Windows 8 tablets in mind, and has already been spotted in HP’s Envy X2 and Samsung’s Smart PC. The dual-core processors are said to be faster and offer better graphics than Intel’s single-core Medfield chips, despite being a close relation, as well as providing at least 10 hours of usage on a single charge.

Clover Trail chips are likely to power devices pitched in-between ARM-based tablets and the full-on x86 Ivy Bridge machines, and it could be these that ZTE is adopting. Also, despite rumors to the contrary, Clover Trail-powered devices will also be able to run Linux and Android, giving ZTE plenty of flexibility should it decide to do so.

Intel’s Windows 8 tablet showcase will be held on September 27 in San Francisco.
