The comparisons began before the phone even arrived. With Motorola setting a press conference date the day before the long-awaited iPhone 4 launch date, the stage was set for a battle royale, and Motorola delivered with a surprisingly fit challenger that came out swinging. Now that both contenders have weighed in, it’s only natural to run the stats side-by-side to see which phone prevails. After getting in a few hard-hitting jabs at Apple’s soft spots with the original Droid, does Motorola have what it takes to return to the ring and knock out the spunky new kid? Before you call your bookie, check out the numbers.
Display
Winner: Apple iPhone 4
As we noted on our comparison of the HTC EVO 4G and Apple iPhone 4, it’s really a matter of taste here, but we’re not above calling it. While Apple’s 3.5-inch display is smaller than the Droid X’s 4.3-incher, it’s also significantly higher in resolution. With 960 by 640 pixels on the iPhone 4 and only 854 by 480 on the Droid X, you’re looking at total pixel counts of 614,400 to 409,920 pixels. Why prioritize pixels? While a larger screen might strain the eyes less, higher resolution means sharper graphics, crisper text, and ultimately more screen real estate, which means less annoying scrolling on Web pages and long documents.
Processor
Winner: Draw
Despite predictions that the Droid X would use the same 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor found in most other top-tier Android phones these days, Motorola pulled an unexpected X-factor out of its hat on Wednesday by revealing that it would stick with the same Texas Instruments OMAP processors found in many other phones, including the old Droid, but ramp clock speed all the way up to 1GHz. Even attempting to get a rough feel for which might best which is difficult: No other phone has used a TI OMAP chip clocked at 1GHz so far, and although we know the iPhone 4 will use the same A4-family processor found in the iPad, we don’t know how fast it will be running, making a comparison, even on paper, worthless.
Storage
Winner: Motorola Droid X
Which is more important: Max capacity, or value? We’ve debated it on previous comparisons, but it doesn’t matter here, the Droid X wins in both regards. The $200 smartphone boasts 8GB of onboard memory plus a 16GB card preinstalled, giving it 24GB out of the box where the $200 iPhone 4 only has 16GB. And while the iPhone maxes out at 32GB, swapping the 16GB card in the Droid X out for a pricy 32GB card will put you up to a total of 40GB.
Portability
Winner: Apple iPhone 4
There’s really no way a phone with a 4.3-inch screen can best a phone with a 3.5-inch screen in portability, but play along with us. The Droid X measures 5 inches long to Apple’s 4.5, 2.6 inches wide to Apple’s 2.3, and 0.4 inches thick to Apple’s 0.37 inches. None of those dimensions can be called egregious, but individually they add up to quite a bit more bulk. And more weight, too. The iPhone 4 weighs only 4.8 ounces, while the Droid X weighs 5.5.
Connectivity
Winner: Motorola Droid X
Unlike the vast disparity between the iPhone and HTC EVO 4G, the latter of which leverages a significantly faster wireless network, both the Droid X and iPhone 4 are stuck on 3G technology. But drag carriers into it, and Verizon clearly has the upper hand, with 3G coverage blotting out most of the U.S. where AT&T’s clusters around cities, and has become notoriously unreliable even where it does reach. Add to that the Droid X’s built-in ability to act as a Wi-fi hotspot for up to five other devices, just like the Evo, and you have a phone that clearly outmaneuvers the iPhone 4 when it comes to connectivity.
Taking local connectivity into account – where most phones don’t have much to distinguish themselves any more – the Droid X is also one of very few phones to include an HDMI output for throwing still shots and video from the phone up on the big screen.
Battery Life
Winner: Draw
Talk about a tough one to call. While the Droid X boasts eight hours of talk time to Apple’s seven, the iPhone 4 also gets 300 hours of standby compared to just 220 on the Droid X. We call that a wash. If the numbers actually hold true, the Chatty Cathys among us will be better served by the Droid X, while those who use their phones less frequently should find the iPhone still alive and kicking when the Droid X has been dead for over three days.
The fact that you can remove the battery on the Droid X does give it a slight edge here, but given how many people we know who carry spare, charged batteries to actually take advantage of this hypothetical advantage (zero), we’re not tempted to give it too much weight.
Rear Camera
Winner: Motorola Droid X
Let’s first concede that specs – especially megapixels – don’t always tell the story with cameras. But until we have both cameras in hand, that’s all we’ve got. And the Droid X wins by every account. Besides higher total resolution with 8 megapixels to Apple’s 5 megapixels, it has a dual-LED flash to Apple’s single-LED flash, and, perhaps most important of all, a real shutter button. While Apple fans will still have to tap the screen to shoot, sometimes blurring photos from the jostle in the process, Droid X owners will get a real shutter button.
Buttons aren’t always bad, Steve.
Videoconferencing
Winner: iPhone 4
The iPhone has a front-facing camera for videoconferencing, the Droid X doesn’t. It’s tempting to shove this into the same category as “camera,” but it’s really for a distinctly different purpose, and merely having a front-facing camera shouldn’t negate the fact that the Droid X has a better camera in the rear.
Overall Winner: iPhone 4
Save the boos and hisses for the comments section. In truth, these two are so varied in their strengths and weaknesses that it’s a draw based on specs alone. While the Apple iPhone 4 will be smaller, possess a more impressive screen and a knack at videoconferencing thanks to its front-facing camera, the Motorola Droid X guarantees a smoother ride on a larger 3G network, comes with more storage, more room to add storage, and what should be a superior rear-facing camera.
So it comes down to the intangibles. Android and iOS 4 both have their merits and demerits, but we think Apple has a better history of supporting older handsets with new software. A two-year-old iPhone 3G will still take advantage of the latest iOS4 software, but many much newer Android handsets haven’t made the leap to Android 2.1 yet – especially those with custom software like Motoblur, as the Droid has. The market for Apple accessories is also overflowing with options. The resale value of Apple hardware stays sky high – as evidenced by 3G S owners selling their old models for nearly what they paid for them. You can always find a friend with an Apple charger in a pinch. The list goes on and on.
Which should you buy? Stay tuned for full reviews of both phones, which should tell far more than specs and speculation ever can.

Hmmm…I think I need a few bottles of hooch before I dive into this one.
Us too!
iphone 4 will be the best :)
All the young gunslingers think they’ve got the fastest draw. This time it’s the DroidX. How many “iPhone killers” are we up to now? 18? 27? The iPhone sends ‘em all to Boot Hill.
@ Dave and Mike: Looks like we can’t agree!
Having had both phones I say that its definately a matter of preference. I can however state several points. Camera goes to iphone all day long. I had the x and now have my iphone 4. The pictures on the x when lighting was slightly limited were awful…pixled out bad camera quality..seriously bad. My family and i were out at a restaurant and i took several photos and was very disappointed.
This debate is stupid. Different people prefer different phones. Everyone get over yourselves
Mike, You are correct that they do use a lot of stuff to compare the phones.. While there is no Droid based personal media player (don’t like the term MP3 as they play other formats) if you used the same ideas as the phone comparsions to compare the operation and performance of other players the iPod would most likely fall short. Sound quality on the iPod is lower then the other players, and while their interfaces may seem lack luster, that is only because the public only knows the iPod as it has become to media players like Bandaid is to bandages. There are other player out there that work as well and are as easy to load contesnt onto, that is if you don’t use iTunes, but this changes with the Droid as apps allow for iTunes syncing and even wirelessly which Apple for some reason does not allow.
While the Droid won’t play protected iTunes, there are other avenues for purchasing media and ways around this. The fact that Apple does not allow for iTunes DRM to be incorporated into other players and phones is indication enough that even they know there are better devices out there and do not want the competition..
Don’t get me wrong, I like the iPod, but it is not the best for sound quality and in my mind not for operation. Can’t really say that I like any of the seperate players for operation, but I know that as a player the Droid sounds better and the media players are more useful then iTunes/iPod version in the iPhone. And actually one of them (DoubleTwist) is very similar to iTunes, coombine that with the fact that media access and playback is very subjective media should be part of any comparison.
Wait a minute.. iPhone the winner.. BS.. The only reason it is listed as a winner is due to a useless feature that only it has.. I mean, real features and specs are a draw or go to the DroidX and the iPhone is listed as the winner, really??
Even with the display considered the wins for the DroidX mean more to the real user and the addition of a useless gimicky feature do not make a better device… I have to disagree with you guys (for the first time) on this one…
And why compare iPod features?? Its a phone not a media player, besides if you look at the media apps for Droid they do what the iPod features of the iPhone do and even better. Can the iPhone sync through wireless and allow for your choice of players?? Not really.. So even if you brought that into play the Droid would win…
Dave, come on buddy. A lot of the stuff they use to compare phones has nothing to do with telephony: apps, games, wifi hot spots, etc., so don’t act like I’m out in left field for questioning why the iPod features are left out. Let me know when the Droid MP3 player hits the market, since it sounds like it will revolutionize the industry and become an “iPod killer.”
Mike: Just because its successful does not make it better. Thats flawed reasoning. Stick with the specs.
iphone 4 will be the best :)
Why is it that when comparisons are made between the iPhone and its competitors, they never mention the iPod features of the iPhone. It’s only the world’s most successful MP3 player of all-time. It’s like comparing stats side-by-side between Lebron James and Michael Jordan, but never listing the fact that Jordan has won 6 championships! Come on Digital Trends, be the first to do it!
I love apple, well it’s mainly Mac book pro that I love. Always used the iPhone, just got the droid x and I like it way more than the iPhone. Sticking with Mac but switching to droid x when it comes to cell phone.
Positive comment for android…the customization abilities are endless….goodness you can do anything. Of course a quick jailbreak fixes those issues with the iphone but then theres the whole warranty thing. I definately think the iphone 4 is just much sexier than the droid x or any droid out there now..its has stayed true to its roots…the flash support coming with the next update will be sweet…enjoy…
I dropped my moto Droid from a tower approximately 100ft case popped off and broke phone still working. Ill stick with Droid.
I don't know what phone to get the iPhone 4 or the droid x… I need some help
DROID 4 EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
la la la la la la la la la lalalalalalalalalalalalallalalalalalallalalalallalalalalalal*ignores droid likers*lalalalalalallalalalalallala
YA IPHONE ROCKS!!!

0_0 This seriously helped me with my school report. My report is about Debatable issues so umm ya…
I've read all the comments here…here's my take….I just ordered the Droid X for $19.99 with contract renewal upgrade. I looked really hard and couldn't find an iPhone 4 for anywhere near that! Sorry Apple, hands-down win for me. Seems nobody in these reviews ever comments that intro of new phones every 6 months is a benefit because it means you can get REALLY GREAT DEALS on some awesome Droid phones with competitive features for next to nothing or better yet, for FREE!
In all honesty, I think the real winners in this argument are those who don't care either way. They are both wonderful phones to different people, but watching you people argue and bicker about PHONES? Are you serious?! That's more priceless than Mike Tyson fighting an old lady or something. It's ridiculous.
If you hate the one of these phones so much then DON'T BUY IT. Don't get online and complain "Oh I had the iPhone 4 but it sucks! Droid is sooo better because it's not Apple! Apple sucks DROID! (Not a fanboy!) "
I love being on the fence, it gives me two groups to laugh at, you people are absurd.
LOFreakinL!
Im a 1st Gen ANDROID user… my main cell is STILL an ancient HTC G1. And guess what? I rooted it! and ive been running froyo for about 4 months, and although its not as snappy as my wifes iPhone 3g (NOT 3gs), i had to make a CHOICE between having new features, or staying behind.. She didnt. WHY? CUZ SHES AN IPHONE USER.
She wouldn't change her iPhone for an android device, because "she's already paid for a s**tload of apps… so thats not really a CHOICE, is it? Shes stranded to the damn iPhone. Whereas im looking into switching for a Nexus One, or a Droid X, because i CHOOSE to.
Problems with iOS? Apple will say its your fault (i know antennagate aint a software issue, but in my personal opinion, HARDWARE ISSUES ARE WORSE!).
6 months? I honestly dont like Motorola (especially motoblur and motorolas version of Android.. i LOVE htc's…); and i couldnt agree more, that a 6 month life span is crap… but aint that kinda like the same thing apple does? Apple shoots a new phone every 9 months or so, rendering the latter one USELESS… i bet first gen Droid users are still using their droid, and its still kicking! Again, if I can still work with my G1, those droid users can live with it.
So, id suggest you do your homework before pointing fingers… youre SO wrong…
But hey, its your choice. You choose to be tied to apple, you chose you want to pay for apps, you chose you want to do and say and think whatever the man in black turtlenecks wants you to.
Paul Suquet, from Mexico City.
OHHH i forgot; besides apples products dont last a thing… (MOST apple devices die the day they turn1 year old… some of em' don't and last for ages, but MOST of them.. die) you've got the iTunes factor…
"Imagine you just bought a VERY expensive phone (for all you americans it aint that expensive, but here in mexico, an iPhone 4 is $12,999 MXN, thats abour $999 USD!!!!! of course android phones are equally expensive..), and you have to WAIT untill you get home, to plug into your computer, load iTunes, activate your "account", download new software… all so you can simply TURN your phone ON…. oh yeah, thats an iPhone…"
iTunes SUCKS big time.. i mean, 100MB download for music management? I mainly use Ubuntu (on a Lenovo T400 C2D 2.8Ghz 6MB L2, 4GB DDR3 machine; yeah, it flys!); and W7 on a lenovo s10-3 netbook. I used to have w7 Pro on the T400, but loves ubuntu… ANYHOW, iTunes laggs all the time… having it as a "default music player" is SUICIDE.. i mean i "JUST" want to play a song, i double click it, and i have to wait for like 40 seconds for iTunes to load its Genius bar?
In my opinion, iTunes is one of the MANY problems in an iPhone.. i know you can sync to other stuff, but really? There's gotta be something ONLY iTunes does for you apple users… and that sucks… so, again, you can't chose what software you use to sync; do you?
While on an android; if youve got Windows, TRY DOUBLETWIST, awesome "iTunes-like" interface (without the crap…) and WI-FI SYNCHING!!! on Linux, Rhythmbox does a great job… and multiplatform, Winamp (dont really like winamp since like windows XP, but… still a great choice, ive got tons of friends who just wont give winamp up).
So, screw you apple!
I have an iPhone 4 and pretty much everything you said is wrong. I'm by no means an apple fan boy but dude all of your arguments are incorrect regarding the iPhone.
One thing not reviewed, which to me is very important as I work in construction and the work environment is not always phone friendly, is that you can get insurance from verizon on a Droid but not from AT&T on an iPhone.
Yes you can go third party for iPhone insurance, but from what I've heard there is a longer downtime while your phone is being repaired or replaced that way.
You can get iPhone insurance at any AT&T store when you purchase the phone
it was a tie, 2 wins 2 loses 2 draws???? winner? how bout a tie breaked . Co worker dropped there Iphone from there hand to the floor (3 feet) in an otterbox, goob bye screen, I drop my droid off the highschool bleachers (by accident) roughly 45 feet, on tiny crack, that so far has had no effect on my phone, droid wins
iPhone 4 is the best!!
The most important part about a touch screen phone is the responsiveness and smoothness of the screen which the droid does not have!
iPhone 4 owns!
The a4 chip makes apps incredible unlike the stupid, slow, useless apps on the android market.
iPhone 4's retina display is unbelievable!!!
BTW I'm writing this on my iPod touch 4g
I have an iPhone 4 and it sucks ass. All the people I know I have them and they suck ass. Your just another fan boy who thinks he has a good phone when really there are better things out there. You truly don't know anything about technology
The truth is, without the iphone there would be no rip-off Droid. So be thankful that Apple created such a great device that everyone else has tired to copy. I have no doubt that the iphone will continue to evolve. And the rest will continue to chase and one up.
Ya relly I have the iPhone 4 it's a crap if iPhone is so good why am I going droid x ya IPhone has some nice features but when compared to droid it's not like droid is hitting iPhone it's nocking iPhone teeth out to hell with iPhone you where great when u where a 3G which I miss :(
God you're a helpless moron.
Your stupidity has made me want to punch you in the face OVER THE INTERNET.
I would actually LOVE to talk about how WRONG you are… So if you're not a little pansy, add me on Windows live (Weespat@msn.com) or Yahoo (sgriffa282@yahoo.com).
WHY ARE YOU TALKING IN CAPS? IT LOOKS LIKE YOU TRYING TO SCREAM OVER THE INTERNET
droid x supports flash and i phone does nto ake the droid… and i own a iphone :(
Only took apple 4 times and the still suck! Get a DROID X…..PEACE
I cracked my ipod touch easily, because it is glass. Not only the screen broke, but the frame/metal bent too. There is also glass to the bottom of the front of the iphone/pod-touch,which also cracked. The androids are durable and meant to last the minimum 2 years.
It is a perfect information that clears all my doubts and gives a clear idea regarding that. It is really advantageous for me.I would definably take the benefit of it. It really helps many users to take the right decision based on the information given.
Dallas apartments
The images are scaled down and do not represent the relative sizes of the devices. The X should look bigger but in the images here it's made look like it's the same size as the iPhone 4.
Check the specs again there big guy…there is only a .5" difference in the size of the phone…the difference is in the screen size, which is clearly larger on the X
Basically …its Mac vs. PC all over again …just compact. Personal preference. …but it does suck that iPhone does not view flash web pages.
oh and by the way to MISTER BROOKLYN who doesn't know how to unlock the CAPS button. I use my droid X as my media device. I have HD movies, AND about 30 gigs of music on it and the external speaker destroys the Iphone speaker and with my BOSE headphones, totally dominates it in sound… I used to have all kinds of Ipods. no need anymore… by the way, how much space do you have on your 32gb (at the most) Iphone anyway? about 25gb? I have 40gb… HA HA HA….
I have the Droid X and I'm surrounded by iphone owners going "wow i envy you, and man I wish I didn't have this contract with at&t so I can get one of those, and WOW that screen is AWESOME"… Iphone owners are all a bunch of followers and alot of them realize now they should have resisted the urge… MY Droid X with FREE wifi tether, NFL network LIVE, free tv programs and oops, lets not forget flashplayer for a true internet DESTROYS ANY Iphone EVER, "any day of the week, especially Sunday and Thursday when NFL network games are on and I can watch them on the go… Android rules…
I'm in charge of testing and deploying mobile devices for my company. I currently have 3 phones, including an iPhone and a Droid X. The Droid X is the phone I use the most outside of just testing. I use it mainly for the features the iPhone doesn't have and that are neglected in this article. 1.) wireless tethering. This is huge for our company. We have 2000 field sales reps that currently we have to deploy both phones and air cards to. The Droid could cut our monthly bill for these 2000 reps in half. That's over a million a year. Yes, the iPhone finally has tethering, but you have to pay a lot extra for it and it is tied to ATT's limited network. 2.)HDMI out – this is great for sales/marketing in the field as well.
There are two big reasons that really sold me on a Droid X over an iPhone 4: Steve Jobs' (and I guess by extension, Apple's) reaction to the antenna "debacle" and how easy it is to turn off the wi-fi and 3G radios on the Droid. Those aren't the only reasons but they're very important to me. I still enjoy my 3G iPhone, but it's steadily getting less responsive as time goes on and the niggling problems are getting to be more of a nuisance as well.
Facetime is a non-issue for me. It's neat, but it's hard to believe that this is such a huge selling point for some. Just as much of a non-issue as the switch to Verizon for the Droid X is. I've never had a problem with AT&T and it works as well as expected; meaning that it works where it's supposed to (civilization) and doesn't where's it's not (the middle of rural country nowhere :) Tbh, I would stick with AT&T if I could. Physical size/design of the phone makes no difference since I'm just going to slap it in a bulky Otterbox case asap! To me, it feels like Apple is now playing catch-up in a market that they helped create.
I have an iPhone, but every time I see people vehemently defend Apple and the iPhone, it makes me think of this. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/152/354164471_a860… I mean, seriously, it's not THAT great, sure it has some cool new things, but it's not the be-all-end-all phone. To me, it seems like the same phone repackaged, and squared.
TOO MANY DROID PHONES IN LESS AMOUNT OF MONTHS… APPLE WILL SIMPLY WIN WITH JUST ONE RELEASE YEARLY! LIKE THE GUY SAID, I WOULD BE COMPLETELY PIST TO BE A DROID OWNER TO FIND OUT A NEXT NEW DROID COMES OUT IN THE NEXT 6 MONTHS WITH MORE FEATURES, AFTER BUYING A CURRENT ONE 2 MONTHS AGO.
FACETIME VS QIK VS FRING (FACETIME WINS WITH NO PROBLEM)
I SIT BACK AND SEE MANY ANDROID USERS STILL USES THE IPOD TOUCH OR NANO AS THEIR MEDIA DEVICE. WHY NOT THEIR PHONE, EH? WATCH AND SEE HOW MANY ANDROID PEOPLE PURCHASE THE NEW IPOD TOUCH 4 WITH FACETIME.. LISTEN TO THEIR VIEWS CHANGE LIKE HOTCAKES…..
NO COMMENTS… JUST WATCH….. LISTEN TO LAME EXCUSES…. SUCH AS "I DO NOT WANT TO USE MY ANDROID AS A MEDIA DEVICE, THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT THE IPOD TOUCH…" WE APPLE USERS SIMPLY SAY TO OURSELVES, OKKKKKKKKKKK STOP LYING… IF YOU LOVE THE DEVICE STOP BASHING OTHERS, I DO NOT CARE IF YOU LIKE THIS DEVICE OR THAT DEVICE… YOU REALLY SOUND SILLY WHEN YOU ACT LIKE A REPRESENTATIVE FOR A DEVICE.
IPHONE WILL SOON BE TO ALL CARRIERS…. SO ALL PHONE MAKERS WOULD NEED TO WORRY… IF THE IPHONE HURT THE MARKET WITH JUST BEING UNDER AT&T… WHAT YOU GOING TO SAY WHEN IPHONE COMES TO ALL CARRIERS?
NEED TO FACETIME WITH FRIENDS OR WHOMEVER… EASY TO FIND AN IPHONE 4 USER
NEED TO VIDEO CONFERENCE WITH AN EVO…. YOU NEED TO THINK WHOM HAVE A WEB CAM PHONE GOOGLE PHONE….
DO I LOVE IPHONE? YES… BUT I LOVE THE SAMSUNG GALAZY SERIES WHOM HAVE THE ANDROID PLATFORM…
I LOVE PALM PRE AND CANNOT WAIT TO SEE WHAT HP GOING TO COME OUT…
I CAN HONESTLY SAY THE ONLY COMPANY NEEDS TO FEAR IS HP…. WHY? BECAUSE HP, DO CREATE THEIR OWN WEB OS AND HARDWARE, JUST LIKE APPLE…. AND GOOGLE DO NOT…..
ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE, BUT THE REAL GAME BEGINS WHEN HP MOBILE SERIES, PSP PHONE AND APPLE IS FOR ALL CARRIERS COME TO PLAY… WHO WILL BE THE TOP PERSON!!! MY BETS ARE EITHER APPLE OR HP!
i phone is already history. android took what they did and fixed it to make it better. the new i phone has far to many problems. for 1 it is not durable in the least. secondly there have been quite a few color problems with the camera on them. lastly the i phone is so damn expensive! why spend that much at AT&T when you can get a better phone and save hundreds a year.
I just got my Droid X Its just the new thing now! Iphone will become history. :D
ching chong ling long… thats what i have to say about the iphone.
i bought the droid x and still havent received it. my buddy bought the iphone 4 and got it in 3 days. wtf. i am choosing iphone as the winner because he got his so fast. but still as soon as i get my droid its gonna blow the iphone out of the water. and just to let everyone know. you can get insurance on the droid. that means break it and pay $50 for a new one. or get the iphone and break it and pay $800. haha. oh and by the way i like phones they are cool and all but they ar still just phones. i think its funny as hell reading what everyone has to say haha… i think everyone should fight more. it amuses me.
YEAH IT AMUSES ME TOO, BECAUSE I BUY MY PHONES BECAUSE I LIKE IT AND I CAN AFFORD IT! NOT THEIR BUSINESS WHAT THEY LIKE… "I LIKE THE DROID…. " … "OK, YOUR POINT IS??" GO BUY IT… I DON'T GIVE A F—….
Once upon a time, shipping, most of the time, has nothing to do with Verizon or Motorola.
And I've checked the droid that my friend has. Seem cheap and heavy
Love the iPhone 4
One thing in all of these reviews that is always missed is the Android Google turn by turn voice navigation that has rendered my Tom Tom and Garmin useless. The apple's lack of this feature is a deal breaker for me. My original Moto Droid simply requires me to voice "navigate to nearest gas station" or "navigate to 3535 West Main Street" and full Google Navi opens and voices turn by turn directions. Yes, Apple has google maps for directions but it's not even close to true Google Navi which is free, accurate, and has the newest roads unlike Garmin et.al. that require pricey updates. I own stock in Apple and Google so whichever you buy is a win-win for me.
I just purchase a Droid X after having the iphone 3gs. In my opinion the iphone is much easier to use right out of the box. I like the zoom for reading better on the iphone as ewll as navigationg around it. However, my son who is 12 loves his Droid X over his iphone. He says the options on it are limitless where the iphone only lets you do certain things. He learned all the options right away and loves it. For me I prefer the iphone, but I'm a Mac user and with mobileme it was awesome. The Droid X is more Windows based and I am not a Windows fan. To be honest it was less about the phone and more about the carrier. Lot's of dropped calls and not being able to use 3G was a problem. It's all just a matter of preference. Really in a few months there will be new phones and udates out. That's why signing a one year contract with any phone makes the most sense if you can afford the extra money.
Your 12 yr old son has a Droid X…must be nice …haha
I've compared both screens and pixel density advantage the iPhone 4 has doesn't help the fact that text, pictures and videos are easier to view on the Droid X. While the text may be sharper on the iPhone 4, because of the tiny screen, it's too small to read unless you hold right up to the face. So the res is more about bragging rights than actual practicality.
And to drive the point home, while the higher res should give you more real estate, you can't view the tiny text completely zoomed out on the iPhone while on the Droid X it's easier to read. So the real estate argument holds no water as you HAVE to zoom in with the iPhone in order to see fine text. Unless of course the user had exceptional vision or is able to magnify his field of vision. THE DROID X IS SIMPLY THE BETTER PHONE, PERIOD.
Always love how they never mention websurfing on these because they would have to mention Flash support. One phone can do a lot more on the web than the other, seems kind of important. And remember that the video chat is iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 only and restricted to WiFi on both ends. Just seems like they always glaze over some Negs of Apples phones.
So does this mean for those of us, who does not intend to use video conference, Droid X is the clear winner?
i got no comlaints, my wife has the droid x and i have the iphone 4. it's just the matter of personal preference.
such a biased review by these guys…
Droid X is a better multi-tasker and moves through web pages fast. Oh… and don't the HD video clips can output to your home flatscreen TV via HDMI cable.
MULTITASKING FEATURE ON THE ANDROID WAS STOLEN FROM APPLE… IS CALLED EXPOSE… ASK ANY PERSON WHO OWNS A MAC….
you can jail break your iphone and run front side camera on 3G.
VERY TRUE… PLUS ALL THE FEATURES THAT ARE MISSING ON THE PHONE YOU CAN GET IT FROM A JAILBREAK… MAKES THE IPHONE WAY BETTER THAN NORMAL
Until you sync your iPhone with iTunes and lose your Jailbreak and all your freeloading apps
You can root your Droid X. Meaning, hack it, pretty much. In which case you can do anything you want to it. When I say anything, I mean anything.
What about Swype? This arguably disruptive technology is available in the DroidX but not the Iphone4.
Front side camera that you can only use if both phones are on WiFi is an issue, apple fan boys need to stop, how about we talk about real features like free Voice Navigation, incredible voice search, talk to text, options of loading my files and programs how ever I want, I rooted my phone and installed Android 2.2 and let me tell you adobe flash works and all sites like ESPN 360 video, try that on an iPhone please… No really try that on an iPhone, there is people like this reviewer that decided not to mention this things, probably because his just trying to justify himself from being stuck with a little girls phone (iPhone), but let me make a few more point, I can rip a movie and copy and paste it anywhere and it works, it does not have to be formatted just for iphone, divx-works try this on iphone, avi-works, mpg-works, bigger screen fantastic, I can copy and paste music anywhere and it works even of a friend has it on his phone, I can copy from Bluetooth and play the music files as well as movies, pictures, let's put it this way it pretty much does everything the iPhone can do but better and then some, just on the free voice navigation with free updated maps it's game over.
People stop underestimate the android phones by google they are so good for example the free nav is very good I have used that for so many time with not even one issue and they do the $1000 navigation. android market has enough apps there are a lot of very good free apps i give that apps 5 stars all the time and so many things that need three pages to be mentioned here so i think the i phone is good but google phones are good to some htc phone are even better then the iphone 4g .Do not forget that verizon coverage is very very good it works even in desert sorry Fanboys but that is the truth
All benchmarks hast Droid X as the superior phone and thats before Droid-X gets Froyo. By the way the review says 2.1 isnt on Droid X? That OS version comes stock with it. DT is obviously biased. on their other reviews they claim how they're ignoring things thats not practical (such as an Evo4G having a bigger screen which is overall better for watching movies/clips). yet they mention Video Conference capabilities? Sure the iPhone 4 can do it.. but i'm confident that people youtube or watch videos a lot more often than they video conference. With pixels theres a difference that iPhone 4 has more. But overall having a bigger screen, which provides more visibility, gives the Droid X no points? I'm sorry but i'd rather watch TV on 60inch 420p vs a 20inch 1080p. Carriers they say its a "win" for droid. But that "win" is a major win. At&t is just horrible. In some cases the service is so bad that you pretty much own an "iPod Touch 4" Idle standby time was the deciding factor on the battery life category? If you dont use a phone within 300hrs.. then you shouldnt be getting phones like these.
Droid x is way better than iphone4. In so many ways, who cares about the front camera. Its not important. Never drops a call or lose service. Iphone dropped calls. All the time. Its on. US- I20 IN MISSISSIPPI. SOMEWHERE…. I BOUGHT 8 DROID X FOR MY EMPLOYEES AND ALWAYS HAVE BARS- RECEPTION. AT&T CAN'T COMPETE.
All I got to say is that you got some lucky employees. I'm not a hater of iPhone 4 dont get me wrong the phone is good. I've experienced the phone but even my friends who themselves own iPhone 4 says Droid-X is better.
In my opinion these websites who do reviews on phones need to get their facts straight cause its ruining their credibility.
Honestly if you placed both phones in front of me, I would probably end up flipping a coin to figure out which one to take.
Just be happy you own one
Pretty biased comparison. The guy doing this comparison made up "review points" to put the iPhone ahead of all of the other phones…
Seriously why would Video conferencing be one of the categories when not both phones have it? Without the video conferencing section, the Droid X has 5 points while the iPhone 4 only has 4 points. So even with the video conferencing it should've been a draw…
Apple fanboy. I hope your family gets run over by cars.
Geeeez you people, the comments here are filled with fanboy crap. 130 a month blah blah…I pay 110 thank you…lol Both phones are fantastic, I've played around on both. Its more dependent on your lifestyle and phone use…calm down or GTFO.
I wouldn't buy the iphone 4.0 if my life depended on it. It's ridiculous to pay 130.00 a month and rarely receive a phone call and spend half your day trying to get your apps to work because the service provider has spent so much time coming up with new gadgets for their phone that they've forgotten it's first about being able to make a call or send a text message with your phone. At&t's service is lousy and useless at this point. I am in the process of cancelling my contract to go with Verizon simply because they actually provide service!
iphone rocks althouh the droid line is great. i just prefer the iphone.
you all talk too much about the tec specs of each phone. This can go on forever. I have had the iphone for 3years and just upgraded to the iphone 4, and I love it, my only problem is with AT&T and it's coverage. As to what phone is better? thats up to the consumer and their like and dislikes. Remember the iphone set the standard for smartphones. The new Droid X is very nice, but bigger is not always better. Hold both phones in your hands and you will feel the quality is in the iphone. There was a comment made in an earlier post about Apple caring about only the money…..really? Motorola must be doing charity work with the Droid…..lol
geez Nick, you obviously didn't have the phones in your hands, EVERY SINGLE REVIEW that actually shows pictures taken with the phones, shows the iPhone 4 with better photo's and Video, and it isn't even close. also everyone that has actually used the shutter button of the DroidX talks about a wobbly picture taking experience and shutter lag, where they praise the iPhone's approach.
and as far as storage, the Droid can not store apps and their data on the add on card…. making the iPhone 4 have much better storage..
also the Battery life, Apple actually is conservative with their listed numbers, and Motorola has always overstated, in real world tests, the iPhone 4, FAR out performs the Droid X and EVO in battery life… straight out of the box, try that with a Droid X, when you get one….
Jon.
So you are claiming that Apple has some "magic" that makes 5 megapixel pictures better than 8 megapixel pictures.
Gotcha.
yes, claiming it with real world tests… judging from this story pics, Nick didn't actually have the phone to review.
here are people who actually have the phones to review. (three below, there are many more just like them) as i said, review after review gives the node to the iPhone 4 for both video and image capture because of the superior components.
http://www.networkworld.com/news/2010/062510-ipho…
All I see in the macworld pic, is the iphone taking average pictures with completely oversaturated colors… that's Apple's trick to fool iSheep into thinking the pictures are better… look at the denzel washington picture. On the iPhone, he looks like a freaking hershey bar, on the droid x, the colors are accurate and balanced.
it is a review of the iPhone 4 (and other new smartphones), not the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 3GS is just there for comparison sake…
again, ALL the reviews give the iPhone 4 the advantage in not just picture taking, but Video quality, along with just about every other quality. reviews that include the actual video and photos so people can plainly see how much better the photos and video are…. Calling all the reviews "iSheep" because they actually show the pics, and video for all to obviously see the difference and not bothering to even look to see which picture you thought the review was about, shows who the sheep really is here.
First of all in the PCworld review it says that it is a close call. In my opinion there isn't much of a difference in the pictures. I have owned Iphone ever since it came out and I am getting sick of it. AT&T is a terrible network, the touch screen gets annoying when typing, pictures always come out blurry and I can't make a damn call unless I am holding it the "right" way. I've never had a droid before but don't go around pretending the iPhone is so great because it is a piece of shit.
How come there is no weight on Flash? The iphone will always be looking up at any android phone that is flash compatible (any with froyo = android 2.2). The internet is filled with flash so without flash u do not have the internet – droid X is a clear winner (not to mention that "sweet" antennae on the iphone) plus saying higher resolution is better than a bigger screen is pretty ridiculous, with screens this size resolution is irrelevant (when they are close) size is what is important.
videoconferencing category? really? why dont they just throw in a "buoyancy" category, or a "runs itunes better" category. are their any comparisons online that are not iphone4 bias? dont get me wrong , if i live in a world were droid didnt exist and the iphone 4 didnt have any problems i would get one but these comparisons are crap. not a word of swype? have they even used swype? cuz its 30x better and faster than thumb thumb touching. what about call quality? that lil bump on the droid makes it easier to pull out of the pocket. what about gps? customization? pretty sure droid out classes the iphone in all these categories. i dont hate apple. i own a frikin macbook pro and love it but i think the iphone4 is over rated its 30x stronger than plastic does NOT mean you can drop it and the phone would be ok. absorbing energy has nothing to do with a tougher shell. just means its got sheer strength and better scratch resistance.the droidx represents and interacts more of/like a computer " in plain sense" and is overall more versatile .bottom line. someone plz send me a link to a non-bias review. not saying the droid has to win but the categories are jacked and prove nothing everywhere i look. thanks <3
You are EXACTLY RIGHT,Gotta give it to ya…Couldnt have sait it better myself. BTW Believe it or not I Dropped my Droid X more than 200 ft. Which shattered the top right of the screen and guess what? WORKS FINE!!!
SWIPE ALSO WORKS JUST FINE, iphone4 =OVERRATED!!!
This is like comparing a BMW to a Acura, they both are great, but everyone would choose a BMW over a Lexus because of the quality.
this argument is invalid . your ignorance towards automobiles makes it that way. those companies have the same over all quality, build, price etc.. i think you mentioned Lexus by accident Acura is owned by Honda and Lexus By toyota. there both luxury divisons of the companies. BMW is a wide general branch. they have sports cars. luxury and everyday driving cars. plz rewrite your comparison .
i would choose a lexus over a bmw and acura anyday. i just am not a big honda fan but they are alright. i would rather drive a 1990 integra than a 2011 bmw of my choice. haha but back to phones. the droid is badass.
In addition to all the tech specs, it would be cool if you guys could add a comparison of how “green” each phone is–e.g. less PVC, bromides, etc.
Thanks
The Droid X won in three categories, and the iPhone won in two, and they were basically "the iPhone is smaller" and "the iPhone has a front-facing camera". This is so biased it's just ridiculous. If you're not going to pay attention to your own results, then why even write a comparison? Just spend the same amount of space telling us why you love your iPhone, and I can skip the article knowing that it's biased instead of having to waste my time reading an article that pretends to be unbiased. [polldaddy 3493651 http://answers.polldaddy.com/poll/3493651/ polldaddy]
give me all the specs because in a couple of days im getting a phone and i need to pick a phone i dont care about the prices just which is better give me all goods and bads dont forget to include which is stronger when dropped
Why is it that you include video conferencing when comparing the Droid X and iPhone 4, but neglected to mention this as part of the HTC Evo comparison? Seems like you were just looking to get the edge to the Apple product.
the network is all that matters, verizons 3g, and soon to be 4g (aka LTE), will support speeds of up to 40mbps down, and 25mbps up. Now i am sure that those speeds arent the one you'll get for the "basic" plan, so get ready to pay for your speed…
thats crap…sorrry people the droid x is better.,….dont get me wrong the iphone is cool….used to have a 3g but the droid x is better
It's amazing how badly iPhone 4 sucks. Apple Fanboys will defend it until the end of time however. I will freely note first off that I have the 3GS, and I bought the 4. I returned it and went back to my current 3GS. It was that bad. It's hilarious to me what Apple fanboys are saying in forums and blogs all across the web, defending this thing like it's some sacred gem, pretending all its issues don't even exist. Ridiculous. Check out the video I made on YouTube about "An Apple Fanboy's take on Life…". It's at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPcQ-cYg8iA
The Droid X has one of he most horrible interfaces ever created, has an eFuse implementation that bricks the phone if you try to do anything they don't like with it, updates to the OS are far and few because it is up to Motorola to do the update, and the video chat is buggy and does not work well. You guys need to research a bit more :(
So let's explore your issues and see how Apple fares:
1. Horrible interface – That's kinda subjective. I'm not a fan of "flipping" through 100 pages of Apps. to find the one I want. Is it possible you are just considering the iPhone interface the standard since you are used to it?
2. eFuse bricks it – Let me know how doing sh!t with the iPhone that Apple doesn't want works out for you.
3. Updates to the OS – You do realize that your precious iPhone OS updates rolls through AT&T as well, right? Have you ever seen a slower, less responsible phone company?
4. Video chat – Go ahead and call your non-iPhone buddies and tell me how great your video chat is? I'll take buggy over "non-existant" anytime.
Dude, iPhone is a cool phone, but let's not pretend it stands out superior in any of the issues you just claimed Droid has.
Love the video, just wish I could give it two thumbs up.
I love how the author decided to put "Videoconferencing" as a category to put the iPhone as a winner while the score is even at 3 – 3. I wonder why he didn't do that with the Evo as the Evo already lost the score toward the end. I think he should add "Glossiness" and give the iPhone an extra point or even "Cute Logo Factor". As mentioned before, one of the most important factor of these 2 phones is the PHONE function. The iPhone's PHONE function doesn't even work if you hold it with your left hand. How about RECEPTION category?? It's obvious that no phone will win against the iPhone in this comparison. I don't have either of these two phones and trying to decide which one to get, but looks like the Droid is a better phone overall.
How about calling? droid x wins by a mile droid x has better battery life and ill take a large screen over a dense one when its that small, it still has a higher pixel density than the average monitor. and any android phone with a camer can video confrence
Thanks for the comparison. Although I like my iPhone 4, I'm always interested what other phones bring to the table. I kinda want to try the Evo and Driod X in hand to see how they handle. I've been hearing mixed reviews but to each of their own. I don't belittle them just because they dont have an Apple logo.
well im happy to say at least your not ignorant like so many other iPhone users. but if you really want to try them just go to a verizon store they usually have a working Droid X in the store. As for the evo i haven't been in a sprint store to try
what they fail to tell you about the video conference (which I find pretty cool) is that you can only talk to others who have the iphone4. kind of a small crowd.
And currently over WiFi on both ends only! Thanks at&t! You've been a bigger boon to Android (in the u.S.) than that $100 million that Verizon spent in advertising for the Droid!
Thanks Again!
Signed: Another Happy (BOGOF) Droid Owner!
I'm guessing those side-by-side pictures aren't to scale?
Actually they are! The Droid X is only .5" taller than the iPhone 4 but has a 4.3" screen compared to a 3.5" screen on the iPhone! Which makes it look so much bigger. Seems to me that there is a lot of wasted surface real-estate wasted there with only ONE DAMNED BUTTON! Yea, I'm lookin at you iPhone!
How do you have such an iPhone-biased "Videoconferencing" category, and not even mention anything as obvious as how crappy iTunes is?? Why don't you have a "Cross-platform" category? Oh, that's right, Apple does not need to acknowledge Linux users because it is not important.
And how does "slightly" more pixels per inch outweigh an HDMI out?? seriously wtf!?
Now look at "Battery life", and how he doesn't give a backup battery much weight… just because YOU do not carry a backup does not mean nobody does. Not even a backup, but i can replace my battery with a BETTER one, in addition to the stock battery becoming the backup.
Terrible, biased review. Might as well have made a "compatibility with iPad" category.
you can replace an iphone battery
Good luck with that warranty when you do.
apple and the iphone is Steve Jobs, when he dies so will apple. Want to see if apple iphone is better than the
HTC EVO dont listen to me see what "Techno Buffalo" has to demo on youtube. see link below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULv-0xcciFE
U must be kidding me u forget the most important spec iPhone 4 is a world phone unless we americans don't realize there is a vast opportunity worldwide and believe if it works here good enough , SAD.
Is the U.S. part of your World? Can you get that current iPhone 4 running on Sprint or Verizon? How is that working for ya?
verizon does have an international plan
Seriously, Droid's a fine phone/gadget but to get down to the nitty gritty of it, Droid is… <drum roll> an iPhone. iPhone is to the smartphone market what Kleenex is to the tissue market. Of course, Droid owners have to disagree by nature (because of their emotional and financial investment), but bottom line… If there was no iPhone, there would be no Droid.
It's just too bad that people who value Apple on the mere fact alone that they make superior products (both hardware and software) will be ridiculed as "Apple Fanboys". What does that make the minority who are adamant about their Droid or <insert inferior product> ? I guess people tend to support the underdog.
Apple is not a perfect company. They definitely make mistakes and bad decisions…sometimes big, sometimes small. I believe what makes Apple products so successful is ultimately their stride toward perfection. iPhone certainly is an excellent example of this. The majority of readers of this post may not agree but the market obviously does:)
In July 2005, Google acquired Android, Inc., a small startup company based in Palo Alto, California, USA. Android's co-founders who went to work at Google included Andy Rubin (co-founder of Danger), Rich Miner (co-founder of Wildfire Communications, Inc.), Nick Sears (once VP at T-Mobile), and Chris White (headed design and interface development at WebTV). At the time, little was known about the functions of Android, Inc. other than that they made software for mobile phones. This began rumors that Google was planning to enter the mobile phone market.
The unveiling of the Android distribution on 5 November 2007 was announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 71 hardware, software, and telecom companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices.
Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone to the public on January 9, 2007 in a keynote address. Apple was required to file for operating permits with the FCC, but since such filings are made available to the public, the announcement came months before the iPhone had received approval. The iPhone went on sale in the United States on June 29, 2007, at 6:00 pm local time, while hundreds of customers lined up outside the stores nationwide.[11] The original iPhone was made available in the UK, France, and Germany in November 2007, and Ireland and Austria in the spring of 2008.

Squashing another Apple Fanboy's FUD!: Priceless!
Your ability to cut and paste is impressive. But the fact remains that even Google marketed their handsets as "iPhone Killers." Like it or not, the iPhone is the bar setter in the smart phone market.
Is "Apple Fanboy" supposed to be insulting? I'm a fan of Apple and I'm a boy. It seems like a perfectly apt label. I'm going to start calling all of these overly aggressive Android fans "Android Fan-douches." Another perfectly apt label.

Squashing another Android Fan-Douche's deluded argument: Priceless!
actually correct me if im wrong but i believe blackberry was first? and sorry but apple has nothing on android. and this is coming from someone who has used both thank you
Idiot android fanboys. They are quick to point out th at android was acquired in 2005. But they forgot that theandroid gui whileit was still in development looked like blackberry os and immediately changed to looking like iphone os immediately the iphone came out. Yea hows that bitches. Morons. If ur going to look shit up do it right.oh by theway im posting this from my droid x. lets me honest I love android but they arecopying apple like everyone else. Suckas!
Please describe "superior." I really need my phone to work when I hold it in my left hand, since I'm….wait for it….left-handed.
I suppose Jobs will write me a letter telling me it's a user flaw and I should immediately retrain myself to be right-handed.
You mistake superior MATERIALS for superior BUILD QUALITY. I'll give you an example: I love real wood in the interior of a car. Right up until it gets gashed by accident. Then I immediately wish it were made from something more durable and easily replaceable, like a composite.
Either way, I don't hate Apple, and I can appreciate their innovation in the past, or at least their ability to build on other people's innovation. Problem is, it takes 2 or 3 generations of products for Apple people to realize their technology is no longer in the lead. That's why you get called "Apple Fanboys."
actually that is not true, if you want to see where smartphones come from you need to take a trip to japan or korea. I lived in seoul for a a few years as and english teacher and they had smartphones long before apple ever took a swing at it. Long before we get any of this cool technology there are children in korea, japan, and china playing with toys that out perform anything available on our market. in 2001 when like 35% of our market had a cell phone it was like 85% over there. And for those old enough to remember history well, it was the closed technology of apple that really hurt them during the pc boom. And now that there are smart phones coming out with open source technology i am sure that they will not stay on top for long. besides att really is a horrible network
How about durability and the all mighty "Gorilla Glass" they have in the Iphone 4. Last I checked its sounds like IPhone 4 owners are going to need to invest in a year round supply of Scratch Doctor for their new screen. God forbid you drop it! It makes it seem like someone tried to carjack your phones processor. =P (But I will agree, I will die if I ever drop an investment like this.)
Overall, Yes the Iphone 4 is nice, but it is plagued by WAY to many issues that they had PLENTY of time to correct. Instead hyping up the phone maybe they should have worked on testing this thing properly. Although I will hope to see a Verizon Iphone 4 in which they fix these issues on the ATT network.
My rating: Droid X (4.5/5)
Iphone 4 (3/5 with all the issues, 4.75/5.0 with all the issues corrected)
Videoconferencing as a category to rate? Seems like we have some apple fan boys here who need to score for the Apple.
The Droid X's screen is beautiful. You hear everyone talking about how if you look really close at the screen…I dont care if I look really close, I am never going to have my phone 1 inch from my eye in a normal environment.
Call connectivity, I hear the IPhone 4 has some issues, like "your holding it wrong." I'm holding MY device I PAID 200-300 dollars for wrong? Thats how you justify this? This is obviously something that needs to be recalled or repaired. Im sorry, I can not take Steve Jobs seriously after he blames his consumers on phone handling abilities. (Best of all this is his suggestion is to purchase a case? Because this makes it better? Seems like they knew about this before hand, and actually they DID.)
i dont understand why people get so worked up over this. they are phones peoplewe dont need to start wwIII over which phone is better because its obvious. iphone destroys android any day of the week and twice on sunday i have owned both phones and i cant stand the android it is horrible the display is aweful and well lets face it in general inferior to the iphone. it seems to me that all the andriod people would rather be iphone owners but the issue is they dont have em on other networks yet. so plz stop the anger and violent words and just admit it iphone won for obvious reasons and will always win.
android droid same thing
But, I bet the Auto Correct is 10 Times better on the Android! ;) It even spells the name iPhone like this "iPhone."
Hey tool, I had the iPhone and switched my network to Verizon to get away from the crappy phone and network and on to an Android. Suck it
The jealousy my friend is in your inability to type correctly without Swype, or a functional knowledge of the English Language/Grammar. The "Hippies" and "Hoards" of MAC loving stoner pansies. There's also an easy to use spacebar in the Swype app on my DROID/Android. iPhone is an old concept and a dying breed. No longer will consumers have to answer to a monopoly of Applications, no longer will the technically empowered users of the cell phone GIANTS have to be forced into the restrictions imposed on us by profit minded programmers. OPEN-SOURCE is here. and remember kids…
For everything and more that iDon't, DROID DOES!!!
-Sent from my DROID X, by Motorola, empowered by the superior network that is Verizon Wireless
i had the iphone 4 and it sux! what good is having a phone that drops calls every time u use it,i previously had the iphone 3gs and really did not have any problems with it , as for the iphone 4 that is a whole other issue. i had made the switch back to verizon for a android phone. maybe in the future the iphone antenna flaw will be fixed and it will make its way over to verizon , and i could have the best of both worlds, good sevice and a great phone, until then the droid is my choice
All I have to say is 3 words Wifi tethering Adobe Droid does Iphone Don't
Are you mentally deficient?
I've used my iPhone 4 to tether WiFi plenty of times.
ummm… iPhone 4 does tethering too.
The article forgot to mention software, whereas the iphone is a closed plataform and you are tied to them forever, and they deny some simple features like transferring via bluetooth a photo you just took to another phone. Not to mention the whole itunes-only use on the pc/mac.
Android is open source and that gives the community a lot of power to make apps. With this phone you can bring your HD movie in your phone (8gb + unlimited amount of swappable microsd cards) to your friend's house, hook it via hdmi to his 52" hdtv and drool amounts xD
Now include the iPhone 4 "Death Grip" where your signal drops from holding it, or the yellow discoloration bands and spots users are reporting. I am starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel for an Android phone.
http://www.sotsyndicate.com/cell-phones/31933-off…
Gimme a break, it's only if you hold it in a certain position with your left hand. If you look at the Digital Trends Facebook fanpage, they asked their readers if they were experiencing it and they all said no.
http://www.facebook.com/digitaltrendsftw
This is being made up by Android users and being over exaggerated.
I guess the in the UK they don't know how to hold it either http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/06/24/iphone_an… just watch the video that is in the article
That's not in the UK, he has a Southern US accident. It's the same video circulating every other blog, the Register just happened to post it.
Do you own the iPhone 4? It's definitely not exaggerated at all.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qd3cla0UkwE
This coming from a user on the Mac forums.
Sandra, He is SQUEEZING the phone…and with his left hand!
I can squeeze my phone with whatever hand, and I don't lose reception.
And your point is?
woah, If by certain position you mean natural position to hold an iphone for righteys, than okay. Because I hold my iphone like the (3gs) and I am glad i didn't get the iphone 4. It's even held like that in the FRIKIN commercials! YOU sir should give ME a break. A break of your kitkat fanboy bar.
Sounds like you are trying to justify not owning an iPhone 4. If you don't own one, don't act like you know what you are talking about.
How do you feel now that Jobs admitted it genius? A Facebook fan page for facts. Be serious.
Why don't you ask Toyota users if they've ever had a problem. They all say no as well. There is a reason you get called a "fanboy."
Now go away.
how about a comparison about signal quality/call quality? I assume the "phone" part of smartphone still means something?
Yeah! About time!
dave, you are just an idoit. that makes no sense. you are wrong in this one. im surprised im the only one pointing this out.
Is the Droid X made out of anodized aluminum or some kind of metal? I hope it's not plastic. The one thing I like about iPhones is their awesome build quality: Metal and glass. Conversely, what I dislike about HTC is their plastic builds. I hope the Moto Droid X is not plastic. Please, don't be plastic.
Unique and ideal Antenna and Proximity sensor Placement with breakable and scratchable glass on both the front and back….Yeaa buddy! That's the stuff (scary) dreams are made of! ;)
I guess Apple forgot to do the sweaty palm testing! They should have field trialed it with some of the hardcore iPhoners, who will wait in the sleet and snow for days. just to be first to flaunt a new iPhone with that, "awesome build quality."
Or maybe they should have worked with a really nervous focus group! (Pick the iPhone or else Porn will invade your every electronic device, that was not produced by Apple!). Perhaps they could give them a Porn latent Android phone to use for a few minutes…….Naaa, on second thought, they may never want to touch that iPhone then!
I Digress!
I hope that it is an aluminum case as well. My Droid's case is aluminum and is built as solid as they come…In fact, a side feature, of the Droid, is that it can be used as a weapon in extreme emergencies. (Brass knuckles are illegal in most states right? Problem solved! Get a Droid! And you can Buzz about how hard they when down with full GPS location coordinates on the Google Map as they fall! And if you start Qik you can stream a video of the hit while it happens! Multitasking is great isn't? Oh sorry iPhoners! I forgot that you don't want crack that pretty glass on the back!) LOL J/K
but i cracked my ipod touch easily, because it is glass. Not only the screen broke, but the frame/metal bent too. There is also glass to the bottom of the front of the iphone/pod-touch,which also cracked. The androids are durable and meant to last the minimum 2 years.
I think the author was working top bottom, he had a conclusion in mind and then abruptly concluded citing the 'intangibles' favoring iPhone. When iPhone 1 was introduced all the other phones such as Nokia top models & Motorazrs had those intangibles such as chargers readily available for those models. And this statement on the software upgrade is wrong. iPhone gen1 cant have some of the 3g features and infact hardly had any support available from apple when I tried to fix my charging issue. Atleast 60-65% of the android phones have 2.1 upgraded only. Moreover the comparison is only between iPhone4 and Droid X and not the previous models as the phone lifecyle are shortened these days primarily due to enormous choice of smartphones these days. Also this goes back to the question of the pros/cons of proprietary vs open standards. Its funny that Apple is against the propriety nature of flash while it itself is the best example for one whereas Android has the open forum with multiple vendors and a open community contribute to the OS.
I have sold phones for years and nothing is better than these new android phones. Ok the new iphone has a nice screen and a front facing camera. that front camera can only be used under wifi for video chatting. So most people will already have there mac at home ichatting. So that makes the front camera useless. Also the multi tasking. I sold a bunch of iphone 4's today and one customer let me play with it for a extended time cause he wanted me to show him how to use. The multi tasking doesnt hold a candle to the new androids. You hit the middle button twice and your last 4 used apps come up. Do you people realize my blackberry world addition did that like 4 years ago. The G1 could do that on androids first crack at a phone software. Android can do anything the iphone can do plus more. Do you people realize that the new droids are going to be DNLA compatible. Meaning you will be able to stream video to your tv with no cables. Iphone has yet to put a hdmi cable on there stuff. Not even to mention the open source software. I have apps where i can download songs online straight to my phone for free over 3g. Its like having limewire on my phone. Iphone wants you to use there itunes service. You cant even have a iphone with out using itunes. If you have a android your phone works like a hard drive. You just drag all your folders on to your mounted phone. Also android will be running full flash here soon. Google "nexus one march madness video". They had a nexus one streaming the ncaa basketball games live from his phone. Do you realize how crazy that is. I understand steve has tried to convince you all that flash is old technology and html5 is the future. But do you realize that the new droids will be able to do html5 as well. So maybe flash is a battery hog and a network hog. And maybe after everyone masters html5 it will be better than flash. But as of right now 75% of the internet is flash based. So why not have a phone that can do everything instead of having a phone thats limited.
dude chill iphone is better period. sometimes less is best if u didn't know just ask apply.. lol i had a iPhone 3gs i just sold for $350 used.. now i've had smartphons for years and none hold their value like iphone." think about it man" android always come's out with something new within 6 months it lost it's value
Better for what? I saw a nice couple of YouTube videos of an iPhone 4 in a microwave and one iPhone 4 that was used as a .50 caliber target! For this I agree with you! ;P J/K
The iPhone 4 is a good product (Not great at the moment) , but "better," is purely subjective!
The Real Value is in the tangible use of the device! The re-sale value is just that. Yes, to your point the Android smartphone market is rapidly becoming commoditized. As is the general nature of a competitive CE market space. The reason that you can get the money that you did for a used iPhone is, perceived value, some market ignorance on the part of the buyer, naive demand due to that general market ignorance, and only one other viable option if the person wants to stay in the Apple eco-system! However, the person wanting and buying does not want real options or choices. They want what Apple gives them period. In a competitive market, the consumer generally wins as the price/value ratio generally goes up, the available options are plentiful, and the capabilities and innovation are always climbing!
This is why Android as a market is superseding those others that operate with a monolith and proprietary product portfolio, which only has minor (functional or cosmetic) changes between each iteration. Android with the World Wide support that it has (OHA), is currently a technology juggernaut and can only be stopped by itself! At the current growth and product expansion rate, you will probably be using and enjoying an Android based product daily, (in the relative future) and not even know it! And I bet that you will say that it is the "Best" product too! ;)
I love it. Now that Apple isn't leading the pack in innovation, we get "Less is best."
Get a grip. How about you just examine yourself and ask, "Will I ever say anything is better than Apple?" I bet the answer is no.
75% of the web is flash? Maybe you meant to say 75% of the ads on the web…
The debate over which phone is better is irrelevant. Apple and Google need each other to keep competition alive and foster new development. Without the other, either phone would languish slowly on the vine. It's the idiot fanboys of both sides who are the butt of the joke. Congrats on lumping yourself in with them.
You're not to wise on the use of Flash are you? Flash is used on most video streaming sites on the web! Try going to Fox.com and watching an episode of House M.D. without it! Some sites support mobile like Youtube does, but may do not so Flash is required by them. You are right about the competition, I am glad the two devices are compared to one another, it does keep the products moving upward at rapid rate.
Sorry cam, but your facts are simply incorrect and highly opinionated. I am not a fanboy of either company, and am in the process of doing research to decide which phone I will purchase next.
It's a simple matter of what is important to the consumer, and your opinions on that do not and should not decide which phone is better. In terms of features, both phones have their caveats.
Your comments on HTML5 and flash display a significant lack of understanding, and anyone reading them should simply disregard them.
All i have to say is this.. iphone has never sold a buy one get one free unlike droid. i wonder why?
Why would Apple give away ANYTHING? They won't even give prospective iPhone 4 buyers, a $30 phone cover to help fix a potential engineering design problem in their new phone!
Apple is all about MONEY Period! You are just a Wallet to them!
There is no noble cause to either fight or sacrifice, for them (not yet anyway)!
And by the way, that is Verizon doing the BOGOs on smart phones not RIM or Motorola or Palm! They all got paid for those "Free" phones that Verizon gave away! Hey I got 2 Droids for $99! YOU CAN NOT BEAT THAT WITH A STICK! Twice the power and Twice the freedom for less than HALF the cost!
Just wait until the iPhone is on their network and is being out sold by the next great Android or RIM device. or at&t manages to wrestle back some iPhone defectors with some cool new Android phones or an incredible service offering! ;)
For VZW they make their money on the service charges not the phones! Apple makes their money on the phones and the back end (locked in) services that they provide to their effectively trapped customer base!
So your real point was?
I agree with you 100%. I'm an iPhone owner.
I love the iPhone, i HATE APPLE
They are all about money.
iTunes -Locked in,
IStore – Locked in,
iDiot – NOT ME
Because Jobs can crush his know-nothing, rabid customer base with high prices while you actually act grateful.
That's why.
That's Verizon's marketing to get more customers not Android's, so I will keep wondering, but what I'm wondering is why you didn't know that.
Perhaps you can offer some useful and completely non-opinionated corrections to the "incorrect," "facts," (an oxymoron?) that you have garnered, thus far, in your "research."
I know that, I for one, can really use a good education on the relative differences, merits and drawbacks between HTML5 and Flash for my mobile device! Please Enlighten Me!
Opps, my HTML5 is acting up again…or is that Flash? Help! ;)
Yeah, I'm torn between the iPhone and the Droid X but your post really helps. I think the reason I like the iPhone is nicer looking and I have and like the iPod touch…BUT the thing I'm worried about most is the antenna issue with the iPhone and the carrier. My wife and I both have identical Blackberry smartphones that have been provided by our respective employers. Mine is on Sprint and hers is on Verizon. I will lose my signal and she still has full signal. So Verizon might be the deciding factor for me. The whole reason I'm getting the phone is for the internet, wi-fi hot spot functionality, and periodic calls. What's the point of having all thodse features if you have no signal because of your carrier or a design flaw.
do you realize how many times you just said "do you realize"?
Your Multitasking statement is wrong as hell sorry. You slide at the multitasking window to bring up more recent apps, mine has 81 apps in the multitasking window, along with the music manager tab.
Of course Apple is about the money. Would you start a company to make people happy or get rich? People being happy is just a lil positive side affect of anyone getting rich.
I'm torn between getting the iPhone 4 or getting a Droid. I might just wait another 6 months and see.
Try finding people who own both and play with them. You wont be able to grip a better opinion of which one you want better than your own. Just takes a matter of experience with the phones to see which ones your comfortable with.
Have an idea of what you want to do with it and what you need it to do! Remember these are just tools not lifestyle or life altering choices! Despite what some "over the top," CEOs may have you believe about their specific products! ;)
I think u shoud get… lets see… IPHONE 4 !!!
The Droid X is nice as is the EVO. I have the 3gs and my iPhone 4 arrives today. I am not an Apple fanboy I really like Android and I personally run Linux on all my computers so I am hoping someday AT&T will get a great Android phone so I can compare myself and then see if I'll stick with Apple or not.
I think that soon it will be less about the physical phone so much (save screen size, phone color or form factors) but, rather what does device A,B or C allow you to do better/quicker/easier/nicer/slicker than the competitive solution. A PC and a MAC are now the same base hardware, and you can arguably accomplish the same things with either, so it is the factors that I mentioned and maybe a few others that I missed that define your choices. Every time that I am in BB, I see people shopping for computers they mull around both the segregated Apple computers and the plethora of PCs variants. To most it is a tool first, not a life style choice and they come with pretty well defined criteria. I predict that the same will be true with smart phones in the U.S., if and when the iPhone becomes available on all 4 major carriers. Android effectively levels the future playing field, for many of the cell phone makers. Happy Shopping! (A word of advice: Do your homework first, be informed and objective!)
You forgot to list durability, now drop each phone and post results…. we may have a new champ.
You are correct, the "Gorilla Glass" on the Droid X is enough for me to choose a winner. When you drop a phone as frequently as I do, lol!
No u cant break iPhone4 screen
I want so bad to see an Android phone win against the iPhone 4. I read the EVO article and thought it was complete crap that the iPhone 4 was ranked better……but then all of the EVO complaints and issues started popping up from users after a few weeks of ownership. I rarely hear an iPhone own complain with the exception of the complaints about AT&T.
If I was a 1st Gen Droid owner, I would be pretty upset to see a new Droid come out literally 6 months after buying one. That is complete crap and proof that Motorola will not stand by their customers. Why not make the original Droid better with more features, firmware upgrades etc?
The conclusion of this article is perfect – the intangibles make up the difference. More accessories for the iPhone, better build quality, better support from Apple (who do you call when you have OS issues on the Droid X? Motorola?) and ultimately better support from Apple.
Who do you call when you have OS issues on android? How about the rest of the world who can check the source and report the bug directly? I have an iPhone, and I don't care much for waiting a year or more for a much-needed update (don't bring HTC sense into this, that's not Droid X). I also don't care much for AT&T's HORRIBLE reception, nor iTunes RAM-sucking, background-running processes.
There are like 100 things that the Droid X owns the iPhone that weren't even mentioned in this review. Hello, a little bias there? Flash support, DLNA, REAL multi-tasking, real customizations (not just a lolbackground change), widgets, removable flash cards (essentially infinite storage), higher mAh batteries, works with more desktop OS's, physical camera button, 3rd microphone for more noise cancellation…..
Still laughing at the "better support form Apple" part, especially after recent events (Hold Different!).
So what is the difference between REAL multi-tasking and what the iPhone 4 does? Explain that. What do you mean that the Droid X works with Desktop OSes or a physical camera? You have a weak claim bro.
The iPhone 4 reception issue has been proven to be over-hyped.
Can't wait to see what you say after the issues with the Droid X come rolling in hahaha
1) iPhone 4 does not have multiple running programs, instead it suspends all programs that are not the active program. So let's say you start loading a webpage from browser, but switch to something else in the meantime. 5 mins later you go back to the browser, and NO PROGRESS has been made, because the browser was just suspended. If anything, this is not multitasking, this is just remembering the state of a previous program and reloading that state. Android, can actually RUN multiple programs at the same time so they can each do their own thing simultaneously.
2) Desktop OS's: Droid X can work with more than just Windows/Mac, unlike iPhones. I use Linux myself, and whenever I want to transfer music/pictrures/etc to and from my iPhone, I must use my friends computer instead, because his can run iTunes. Android works more like a flash drive; You plug it in, and can drag and drop what you want into and out of it.
3) Physical camera button on the Droid X allows the device to act more like a real phone. That way you do not blur the photo by having to push a 'touchscreen button' to take a photo. Also the Droid X has image stabilization. The front facing cam on the iPhone is nice, but can only be used on WiFi, making it near useless since when I have WiFi, I am near a computer with a real webcam (for me, anyway). It would be better if it was usable on 3g/4g.
Also, the iPhone 4 reception issue has nothing to do with the way you hold it because it has everything to do with AT&T lol. Motorola has proven to make great phones recently, with excellent hardware and sturdy materials. I am pretty sure that it will not disappoint.
But you can run Pandora in the background while you do other things with the iPhone 4. How is that not multitasking?
That is indeed a form of multitasking.
But I have to ask you what exactly are the "Other things?" Apple typically reserves the APIs that allow for "real," multitasking for their own services (until iOS4 that is). They allowed for some rudimentary applications to run in the background, music being one of those services. As was mentioned above the majority of 3rd party (non-apple) applications are not allowed to run in the background. Prior to iOS4 your 3rd party apps could not save the users state and information at the time of app switching and in some cases had to reload the app and any saved date when you came back to them. With this new iOS the OS allows a properly written 3rd party app to save that user state and info, then puts the app into sleep mode (no CPU cycles) until you come back to it.
Look up Cooperative Multitasking on wikipedia for a reference to Multitasking methodologies. The iPhone (iOS4) effectively does cooperative multi-tasking (like the old Widows 3.1 did, for most apps.), while Android operates more like Preemptive multitasking, where most apps run in the background. For iOS, the "multi-tasking" is determined at the app level by the developer, while for Android, the OS handles the multi-tasking so the developer never really has to code for it.
I hope that helps! Oh an I was just streaming Pandora while downloading 2 new apps and surfing the web at the same time on my Droid! Oh wow and now I am playing a HQ Youtube with the Video's audio being mixed in to with my Pandora music!….hey that sounds kinda cool! ;)
You know what, would be interesting would be a productivity comparison between an Android based phone and an iPhone. How much and you accomplish in a set amount of time!
You're absolutely true on this argument, way to go man!
I have the iphone 4 and at first I stayed away from all Apple products. But, I was playing with one of my friends iphone 4 before I got mine and this phone is the best of every phone I have ever had. Yes, you are right, iphone 4 does not "truly multi-task" but in all actuality, it does. When you open up app/programs and switch to another one then go back to the one you left, I picks up where you left off. When you download/upload anything and switch to another, it is still running that task and will complete it regardless if you are on that app or not. So in a sense, it is multi-tasking and also conserving energy.
OK…..
Let's not say the reception issues are "overhyped." When Jobs finally admitted it, you know it had to be bad. That egomaniac never admits anything.
Here's your crow, you want some ketchup with that?
I have the Droid X and there is nothing wrong with the phone. Verizon's coverage is way better then AT&T's.
The Droid X beats the iPhone on so many levels. Stop hating on Droid.
I am a first gen Droid owner and I think that it is Fantastic that Motorola and all others that leverage the Android system continue to innovate and produce better, faster and more capable products! The android community is on the upswing and gaining momentum, not at the plateau! It is nice to see ANY tech. doing that these days! Oh and the firmware is being upgraded, and will offer more capabilities to my Droid. Version 2.2 (Froyo) is right around the corner for the Droid! Nope not mad at all! In fact I am loving this thing! Android as an OS really does not need any support. 2.1.1 is quite stable as a mobile OS, and applications can not really destabilize the OS due to the fact that they run in Java VM containers versus Objective C/C++.
The only time that I have ever had an issue with my phone was when I was running several apps (at the same time by the way) and I loaded too many new apps (164) on the phone, which exhausted the available App. memory. As long as you manage that, you should be okay. Memory is finite!
Note: The Gen 3 phones will have even more memory though, and that is a GOOD thing! ;) Even more apps! Yay!
I do not agree with several of the different premise indicated within the comparison, because too many comparative factors were left out! I suspect that this was because of either product bias, article size limitation or ignorance about the specific capabilities of the products under review.
To waste article space on the intangibles (irrelevant to most) , tells me that article size was probably not an issue, which leaves either product bias or product ignorance (which can lead to bias)!
To answer your question, your first stop, for Android Phone support, is the Carrier that you bought your phone through. The probability is fairly high that you are not the first person to report this particular android phone problem. If the phone is defective they will generally replace it…. I believe that this is the same with either Apple or at&t. The second stop is with the many support forums! There is a huge community supporting Android users out there! And there are solutions to problems that even the Mfgs. were not aware were issues! So bottom line you are NOT alone in the Android universe! In fact it is quite populated in there! oh and from what I have seen of Apple support, you have a challenge just getting them to admit or acknowledge that there is a real issues with their products. Or you get some lame a$$ advice like "You are Holding it the wrong way!" Yeeeeaaa, that is the kind of support that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling……..in one spot only!
There's also another possibility to take into factor, besides intangibles and bias, the fact that it's not uncommon for these companies to pay websites, magazines, etc., to review there products, which is essentially the same thing as payola with the radio stations back in the day, and they say thats not allowed in the radio industry anymore, bull crap have you heard all the crap on the radio now a days, and how it gets repeated over, and over, and over.
I have the original Droid and I've had 2 firmware updates since I bought it.
And just as a side note, I don't think this competition is fair, the categories picked in the article automatically are bias toward the iphone. Videoconferencing? What about the QWERTY sildeout keyboard? The removable battery? Expandable memory? Customizable home screen with widgets?
Not only is the droid x better than the iphone.. but in my opinion the droid x destroys the iphone. While the iphone only has apps on every page the android software let's u have all sorts of awesome widgets and Android allows you to customize your phone while the gay iphone software only allows for apps to be moved and wallapaperes to b changed. Just these two
things, in my opinion, is enough to beat the iphone.
Also, the only reason people prefer the iphone 4 is because that's the only phone they've ever tried/had and they haven't even seen the droid x before. I've tried and used the iphone for long periods of time as well as owning a 2nd generation ipod touch and the droid x is way easier, more customizable, and overall a better phone. I am not the only person that thinks this because I know other people that have the same exact phone and love it. … I am actually on 13 but im smarter than my age indicates. Runnin android software on xbox or ps3 would also b great.
