Apple sold 5 million iPhone 5 units in the first three days after release. Considering most of these buyers never saw, held or played with an iPhone 5 in person, that’s a big leap of faith. While we haven’t seen any flubs the scale of “Antennagate” this time around, there have been plenty of complaints about the new smartphone.
Let’s take a look at the most common gripes people seem to have. While not necessarily universal or even exceptional in the world of smartphones, these are the iPhone 5 problems that people have been complaining about the most online and around the world. Wherever possible, we’ll also let you know how you can work around these issues or fix them if you’re encountering them as well.
Problem: Apple Maps
It’s no secret that Apple and Google are no longer exchanging Christmas cards. The “thermonuclear” war Steve Jobs initiated on the Android platform is far from over. With iOS 6 and the new iPhone 5, Apple stripped out the Google Maps app as the default and replaced it with its own Maps app. A flurry of stories in the days following release focused on mistakes and inaccuracies in Apple’s new navigation system.
The data is inaccurate for many places, the app is buggy, and many core features of Google Maps that people had come to rely on simply don’t exist in Apple’s Maps app. The fuss in the press got so bad that Apple CEO Tim Cook actually apologized publicly, and promised the app would improve over time.
Workaround: There’s no way to fix the Maps app, and no telling how long it will take Apple to get it right, but in the meantime you can always turn to an alternative. Here’s a roundup of the best alternative map apps for iOS. We’ve been hearing that the Google Maps app for iOS 6 is just around the corner for a while now, but right now the only way to access it on your iPhone 5 is through the browser: Point it to maps.google.com.
Problem: Can’t connect to Wi-Fi
A number of people have reported issues with their iPhone 5 connecting to specific Wi-Fi networks. Sometimes it refuses to connect at all; sometimes it drops the connection. Some people report that even standing right next to the router with their iPhone 5 the signal strength is extremely low, but it works fine on other devices.
Workaround: You can always try holding down the Home button and the Lock button together for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo and the phone restarts, but this is unlikely to be a permanent fix.
Solution: Apple released the iOS 6.0.2 update specifically to fix the Wi-Fi issue, but it has persisted for a number of people. If you have the latest version of iOS and you are still experiencing Wi-Fi problems, you should go to an Apple Store or call support and see if you can get a replacement. A number of people have reported it as a suspected hardware issue and have been given replacement devices that didn’t have the same problem, although there hasn’t been any official recognition of a hardware issue.
Problem: Overheating and excessive battery drain
After the iOS 6.1 update rolled out, a number of user complaints regarding overheating and a fast draining battery surfaced. Some reports linked this to a problem with Microsoft Exchange 2010 that was supposed to be fixed in Apple’s iOS 6.1.2 update. However, some users are still reporting an excessive battery drain problem, even after the latest update.
Workaround: Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts and Calendars > Fetch New Data and turn Push to Off and select Manually at the bottom of the screen. This means you’ll only get new emails when you actually fire up the email app, but it has solved the battery drain and overheating for some people while they wait for another software update from Apple.
Possible solutions: Some people have reported the issue solved itself after a hard reset. To perform a hard reset, hold down the Lock and Power buttons simultaneously for a few seconds until the iPhone restarts. You can also try deleting your Exchange account, restarting the device, and entering the details to create the Exchange account again. Beyond that, it looks like your only option is to wait for another iOS update. We’ll keep you posted.
Problem: Scratches on the body
Reports of the iPhone 5’s anodized aluminum casing getting scratched and scuffed very easily started to emerge quite quickly after the launch. A number of people found the coating was easily scratched off around the edges and chipped on the back panel, revealing the silver aluminum beneath. There were also reports of iPhone 5 units being scratched right out of the box.
Apple’s marketing boss, Phil Schiller, responded to an email from a complaining customer to say, “Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal.”
Workaround: Assuming your smartphone isn’t scratched on arrival then you should invest in a bumper or go shopping for iPhone 5 cases. If it does get scratched you could always polish off the coating to create a silver highlight around the edge or even laser engrave something on the back.
Problem: Purple glare on photos
The camera on the iPhone 5 is supposed to be the best yet, but many users have reported a strange purple glare. The effect seems to rear its ugly head when there is a strong edge or out-of-scene light source. The standard lens flare effect we’re all used to seems to have a purple hue when using the iPhone 5 camera. In direct comparisons with other cameras, such as that on the iPhone 4S, the difference is pretty clear.
Workaround: Apple released a support document addressing this issue and suggested that, “Moving the camera slightly to change the position at which the bright light is entering the lens, or shielding the lens with your hand, should minimize or eliminate the effect.”
Problem: Light leakage
A few people reported that light was leaking out around the power connector on the white iPhone 5. It’s not really noticeable unless you are in low light or dark surroundings, but it is a flaw.
Solution: Show the offending iPhone 5 at an Apple store and they’ll replace it with a new one.
Problem: Rattling from inside
A number of people reported a rattling noise coming from inside their new iPhone 5 when lightly shaken. Apparently in the rush to meet demand some iPhone 5 units shipped with a battery that was not properly set.
Solution: Take your iPhone 5 to an Apple store and they’ll fix the loose battery or offer you a replacement.
Problem: Date and time bug
There have been several threads in the Apple and Verizon forums about a bug with the date and time incorrectly updating on the iPhone 5. Some users reported that the device was losing minutes, but others complained of it being hours out of sync and even changing the date by several days. The majority of complaints concern Verizon customers, although there are some complaints from Sprint customers as well. Many people have suggested it is related to the LTE network, but neither Apple nor Verizon was keen to take responsibility.
Solution: You can try switching the update from automatic to manual in Settings > General > Date & Time. Some people have suggested switching off LTE or resetting the phone, but there’s no definite fix. If you experience this problem then complain to your carrier. Some customers suffering from the problem have reported it magically vanishing so there’s a good chance that Verizon is working on it behind the scenes. Judging by reports of similar issues from people on Verizon with other phones it is likely not an Apple problem.
Problem: Screen flicker
Reports of an intermittent screen flicker on the iPhone 5 have also been pretty common. This glitch most frequently appears on the virtual keyboard in the App Store when users go to enter their password to purchase an app. It turns up as flickering lines across the bottom of the screen over the keyboard, but it’s relatively minor.
Solution: Wait for the next iOS update because it looks like a software glitch and will likely be fixed when Apple rolls out a platform update. There’s not really anything you can do about it in the meantime.
Problem: Unresponsive touchscreen
A few complaints have come in that the iPhone 5 touchscreen is randomly dropping touch input when a finger is dragged forwards and backwards diagonally across the display. Some people have even reported a completely unresponsive touchscreen or the screen going blank for a few seconds. There have also been complaints about the touchscreen registering touches when the user hasn’t touched that part of the display. While this doesn’t seem to be a widespread issue it is clearly a pretty extreme problem. There could be more than one issue here, some tests suggest the quick swipe failure is an iOS issue, but the more severe unresponsive or wrongly registering touches problems are likely to be hardware related.
Solution: If your problem is severe then take your iPhone 5 to an Apple store and show them the issue and you’ll get a replacement. You could try resetting or restoring your iPhone 5, but this is probably a hardware problem and you shouldn’t have any trouble getting a replacement. If you are experiencing the quick swipe problem then you may just need to wait for an iOS update.
Other problems
If you’ve encountered any other iPhone 5 problems or you want to volunteer some fixes then post a comment. With the severe problems we’ve suggested that you visit an Apple Store to get them resolved. That’s because this will always be the quickest way to find a fix or get a replacement phone. If you are unable to get to an Apple Store then contact customer support, but you can expect to be asked to run through troubleshooting steps and then have a bit of wait time before they’ll ship you a replacement.

I think that the i-Phone is awesome when I compare it to my Old BlackBerry Bold and the Curve I have as a personal phone. It downloads much faster, emails allow you to open attachments, brilliant, UNTIL you want to use it as a phone, then all hell breaks loose, or rather the connection does, I lose half of what people are saying because the loud ‘spring like noises’. Any ideas?
aww man…won’t stay on the wifi, no notification when texts come in, piss poor internet connectivity outside wifi (even in strong signal areas) if you get a phone call while using the camera app, when the call is over you are greeted by a black screen that you have to use siri to get out of…honestly i miss my 4s & i hate having these problems, but not enough to switch to hack-prone Android…Apple PLEASE address these issues, as a person who has had MOST smartphone offerings and has nowhere else to turn…we need a new player NOT WINDOWS
Mmm just jailbreak your 4s n bang i got the 5 ;) with the features i like and i want i customized my 4s to better than 5
We have 2 iPhone 5 and my GF had GSM reception issues in some area of the house, the same problems disappeared when turning off bluetooth. I have also to report scratches after a couple of days use and my front camera stopped working all of the sudden. Taking it to service this week, let’s see…

I haven’t seen my issue yet. And it’s causing quite the laugh with family & friends. My phone is texting “zoomzoomzoom” to whoever I had texted last. It is happening when the phone is in rest mode. Yesterday, it was sitting on my table, not touched for over two hours, and it sent it out. I thought it was a fluke but tonight has been the 6th time since I purchased the phone 4 weeks ago

The screen occasionally becomes gigantic, and I have to turn it off to get it to work.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh……..mine does the same thing!,,,,
It’s like a third of the screen just goes POP and fills the whole screen..
Thought it was just me……I’ve swapped my phone twice and it’s still happening ….

Look in accessibility, its called screen zoom. You may have triple click home button to enable it.
I have a Subaru Legacy 2012 with Blue Tooth & when I upgraded from iphone 4 to 5 I now have to connect manually versus automatic with the older version phone. Another major problem is a buzzing or fluttering sound in ear when holding new phone up to my ear with NO ear buds or headset. Very annoying & not sure what to do?? VERY upset & flustered as this is my 2nd iPhone 5 in 30days with SAME exact issues!! Any help or advice would be Greatly Appreciated!

I live in a rural area and am unable to get any service at my residence. The Iphone 3G & 4S did not have this problem. After talking to Apple & ATT, it was determined that the phone is too advanced to work off the network in my area. Nobody cared to share this with me when I purchased the product and nobody is offering a resolve. No more Apple for me!!!!
The lock button on the top of the phone has stopped working, not all the time, about one in two time. I’ve sent it back, yet to hear what the problem is.
My problem isn’t screen flicker it’s horizontal lines top to bottom on the screen they appear to flicker but they’re permanent it’s like the picture breaking up and it’s less than a week old!!!
I guess everyone expected to much from Iphone 5, result little inprovements frorm Iphone 4s.
Cannot get phone to sync with yahoo email
My phone is starting to freeze !!! Ugh he iono if iPhone5 was the way to go :( I miss my droid
I got a problem with this ad appearing in my news feed. How do I stop this?
I need assistance, my iphone5 photo is stuck on ‘constrain’ cant view photos. When i go to photos i get a 9 square grid which is resizable and I cant get rid of it. Also on screen there are several siz options and ‘original’ and ‘square’. I have tried all of the above and nothing gets rid of it. its probably realy simple but then so am I.
i have just bought the iphone 5 i was scared to as i have heard alot of bad things about the phone now i have only had it a few days and i have upgraded the ios to the new 6.1 the day i got it and i havent had any problems with the phone at all yet so far its the best phone i have owned and i used to swear that the iphone 3s was the best ever made but with saying this i have had a problem with the power adapter part of the charger i used it once and then it stopped charging my phone im not sure if its a common thing or if mine was a once off thing but i did take it back to vodafone where i got the phone and they have sent it off to be ether fixed or to be sent a new one
I guess everyone expected to much from the new iphone 5, and there was a little inprovement from the last Iphone 4s.
my iPhone 5 got a same problem with my iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, all on ios6.0.2 , the screen will not auto lock even u had set 2mins or 5mins auto-lock :(
Cannot get it to sync with yahoo email
The scratch thing is the worst. Phill Schiller should be ashamed for saying such rubbish
I am using the Fine Maps app. It gives you the option to set google maps as the default and it works great! I got my Google maps back!! I also paid 2.99 for the ad free version which gave me a bigger map screen.
I have had no problems with Apple Maps, in fact I was so impressed by my location that 9 times out of 10 it will show my location right down to the parking spot I’m parked in. Google maps looks cartoonish, I really like the fly over and enjoy the shadowed buildings. The maps are very good for where I am, and for places I have just browsed; using it more like a Google Earth App vice a general local map and directions tool.
dont have, so nothing
I don’t have the iPhone 5, I have the 4S, (I’ve upgraded everytime except this time, because I still have a ways to go on my contract) But, regarding screen flickering, I’ve noticed it too ever since the IOS software update 6, usually when you have to put your password in to buy or download something from the App store.
Have call quality issues with my iPhone since release/purchase. Please help!https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4348915?start=0&tstart=0
I haven’t had most of the problems mentioned. I also don’t use a case, and have no scratches. The weird line App Store glitch seems to have been addressed in an update already. I will readily admit to Apple Maps being not very accurate. I don’t blame Apple for trying, as Google wouldn’t include turn by turn GPS as they did for the Android OS. I’m a little confused about how the article says it can’t be fixed. Anything can be fixed! But, it’s obviously going to take time.
I just mean there’s nothing you can do to fix the maps app, you’re right Apple will undoubtedly improve it over time.
Am enjoying iPhone 4 I have
I see people complaining about iPhone 5, Android in general, their PCs, Windows 7 and 8, and even Macs. It would make one believe all tech is inherently bad and “behind the times” based on all the angst.
keep this crap off my Facebook page!
me no lol
Any plans to write a similar article about functional competitors, such as the GS3?
Yes, it’s in the works.
Hi worst phone ever iPhone 5 batt is crap, screen cracks easy, connection problem, heats up , it’s a lemon , consumers should be able to get refunds on a shit product. Does not live up to the name never buying another apple product very very disappointed whit I 5 .
when ever my iphone5 dies it doesn’t turn on for at least 2days. and my battery doesn’t charge properly
biggest problem is the lightning cable..big pain in the ass!
I agree with the maps….
Disagree with:
Scratches on the body, I have none and have had it for a month with no case
I could only reproduce the purple glare by pointing it directly at the sun.
I’ve never seen the screen flicker.
If your phone is rattling on the inside that means you probably dropped it.
Date & Time bug and unresponsive screen is new to me…. sounds like only 1 or 2 people complained.
If you have issues simply backup your iphone, wipe, update, restore backup.
Also if you have had an iphone before its not a bad idea to set up as new device, instead of using an old backup.
“If your phone is rattling on the inside that means you probably dropped it.”
–mine is, that’s why I immediately sent it back to the store where I purchased it. They even did not ask if I dropped it, so I assume that they are already expecting complaints like that. :(
“Scratches on the body, I have none and have had it for a month with no case”
–and also this. I bought a soft jacket together with my phone but voila! after a few days.. I saw this freaking scratch right above my phone. SAD!
How about Android problems? Can I get a rundown of those?
Working on a similar article for the Galaxy S3 now.
Android.
dont hav 2 worry with my dumb fone! haha
The iPhone 5 scratches like crazy. It’s because the body is metal and not plastic, the metal is just painted over instead of staying the same color all the way through like you would get on a plastic product.
The body being metal is no excuse. the problem is that the bezel is just painted aluminium (very soft metal) unlike tha back and sides. This should not happen on a top of the range phone.
I agree. Sloppy on Apple’s part. And my guess is that the 5S will fix this, leaving previous owners screwed.
My Iphone 5 keeps locking as i’m using it making ity very difficult to do anything. Has anyone else experienced this problem.
Its Apple. Enough said.
IPhone keeps wiping out!!
I know making calls with an i phone is unusual but why is it that my unit frequently only makes a connection at the second time of trying
Hi I have an i5 and all the video’s I take on this phone will NOT upload using iTunes or Microsoft outlook?….I can’t ‘drag and drop’ or upload the movies as a movie, or photo..
All my i4 videos still upload no problem?….any ideas?
Just got my iphone5 about two months ago every couple of days when I try and make a call it just ring the person I’m trying to call once and then stops on my my phone it bleeps twice and comes up call failed on the screen I have had two new SIM cards and a replacement handset and it still does it I’ve been on the phone to Vodafone for two hours and it still does it HELP,,
SAMSUNG BETTER THAN ROTTEN APPLE.
YES including mine – screen fades to black – reboots and wipes itself asking to plug into iTunes. They are cheap junk I only have an iPhone because its free from the company why people line up for this junk is beyond me.. This is why Apple Stock is dropping – go buy a Samsung phone that lasts 10 years!!
My iphone 4 was a blessing compared to this 5 phone. WiFi issues and now its screen is locked up. I think its a crap phone I have already had it replaced once and it a nuisance to have problems.
1)My iphone hangs and only if I switch it off it works again.
2)I have also got a completely black screen twice and pressing the home bottom did not do any good,I had to turn it off for it to work.
3) When I turn on the camera pink lines come on the screen and I am clueless why this happens.
I am completely disappointed with this buy and would not suggest it to anyone.
I have a problem with my iphone 5.
The problem is that it puts No. sim card installed when the sim is already insert , The sim Nano is good. I think that there is a problem with the iphone itself . Any one can help me plz?
Thanks.
