New reports pin an 80 percent chance on the iPhone landing on T-Mobile in the near future.

Is Apple’s forlorn marriage with AT&T about to turn into an open relationship? Yes, according to Cult of Mac, but in a twist worthy of any soap opera, longtime suitor Verizon won’t be the one to end up with Apple’s coveted goods, but T-Mobile.

Cult of Mac cites a “highly placed” source at T-Mobile, who places an 80 percent chance on the iPhone appearing on the carrier in the third quarter – as soon as two months from now.

How did the fourth-largest carrier in the United States spring past Verizon and Sprint for Apple’s business? Allegedly, T-Mobile’s colossal parent company, Deutsche Telekom, was able to throw around its weight to some degree. More importantly, T-Mobile is the only other GSM carrier in the United States, allowing Apple to shuffle its hardware over with minimal modification. An earlier report in Wired claims that Apple investigated the possibility of a Verizon iPhone and found that it would essentially require a rebuild of the phone from the ground up.

The intent is certainly there – on T-Mobile’s side, at least. Deutsche Telekom CEO René Obermann told the Financial Times back in March that “T-Mobile USA is hoping to start selling the popular smartphone later this year or next year.” Whether or not Apple has come around on its end remains to be seen.

  1. Dan Gaul at 9:01pm 22nd July 2010 Who's excited for this? Anyone think they'll still go to Verizon as well? It would be great if they opened it up to all the networks.
