iPhone news: Rich people love it, outsells all other phones combined

Below, we discuss how far ahead the iPhone 4S is pulling and how a study shows that wealthy smartphone owners are more likely to own an iPhone. 

iPhone outsells all other smartphones combined

According to a report by AllThingsD, the iPhone 4S is selling so well on AT&T and Sprint that may be eclipsing sales of all other smartphones put together on the carriers. And at Verizon, its sales may be roughly equal to the combined total of the carrier’s entire smartphone portfolio. These numbers are particularly crazy on Verizon, where the iPhone is one of the only top phones to lack 4G LTE connectivity. It seems that fast service just isn’t as important as an Appley user experience. Samsung’s Galaxy S II and Galaxy Nexus remains one of the top-selling phones outside of Apple. This begs the question: Does Apple need to put any effort into the iPhone at all? Even when they phone in a new model (literally and metaphorically), the thing seems to double in sales. Wealthy people prefer iPhone

A study has shown that wealthy people prefer the iPhone. Research by The Luxury Institute (via Reuters) studied app usage among those who earn at least $150,000 or more per year and found that 45 percent of those studied use the iPhone, followed by 35 percent with an Android device. This contrasts the nearly 50 percent market share for Android and 30 percent for iPhone among all smartphone owners. Wealthy people also tend to download more (80 percent have downloaded apps) and pay for more apps. No surprises there. They also tend to buy less games, but this could be due to the study’s average age of 52 for those considered “wealthy.” The study was conducted by polling 603 people whose average income was $295,000 and net worth was $2.8 million. It did not, however, study how much more popular Grey Poupon and Fig Newtons are among the wealthiest of our citizenry. Another lost opportunity…
