Great article. Interviews are very to the point. Google now realizes how difficult it is to enter the payment systems value chain. Not every market is a sitting duck! As you point out, too many players, incumbents like Banks, Telcos and credit card companies and new entrants like Square and Dwolla want a piece of the action and won’t easily give in. In addition, Google’s value added to the mobile payment ecosystem is questionable: the technology is new but rapidly standardizing and Google does not have a strong lever to drive usage among merchants or users, does it? Google is out of its comfort zone, the Internet world it controls through huge technological investments. I wouldn’t write off NCF payments altogether, though. A seemingly obsolete technology can meet a specific need, in this case fast checkout for small payments. After all, millions of people still use swipe cards, send SMSs… when technically better alternatives exists.
