iTunes 9 on 64-bit Windows 7 has Issues with iPhone

itunes

The latest version of iTunes doesn't play well with Microsoft's Windows 7 OS.

Reports are coming in that the latest version of iTunes is having an issue when installed on Windows 7 64-bit computers. According to numerous posts on the Apple Discussion forums, the combination of 64-bit Windows 7 and iTunes 9 is unable to synchronize with the iPhone in most instances.

According to multiple users, iTunes 9 often gives, an error code 0xE8000065 described only as an unknown error. The users also report that iTunes will sometimes recognize the iPhone and other times it will not recognize the device. Windows also reportedly gives an error that reads MTP USB drivers can’t be installed.

There are six pages of user posts on the Apple forums with many of the users reporting the same exact issues. One user reports to have resolved the issue by turning Bonjour off. However, other users posted saying that turning Bonjour off only solved the issue for a short period. After restoring the iPhone from a backup, after disabling Bonjour, the issue occurred again.

One user going by the name plus613 reports that he has three operating systems installed on the same computer and the same issues are noted on Windows 7 64, Vista Ultimate 32, and XP Pro works but is very slow. There is no official response or fix from Apple at this time. Many of the users are running Intel P55 based motherboards.

One user reports five steps that have resolved the issue for a while including a complete restore of the iPhone, deleting the iPodDevices.xml file in C:\UsersUser Name\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes directory. Turning on C-State functionality in BIOS, removing Bonjour from Windows 7, and closing all other programs before plugging in the iPhone.

  2. Slashusr at 5:45pm 30th December 2010 Frustratingly, mouse-hurlingly, keyboard-clacking slow -- I tried "Run as Administrator" (i.e. right-clicking the iTunes desktop icon) and, lo, artwork retreived instanter, folders imported with a whisk and my iPhone recognised as an old friend with a warm and heartry handshake. Try it -- I won't say it will cure all your problems, but it is a start. slashusr (running Win7 ""Ultimate, 64-bit, Intel Core i7 CPU, 1.73 GHz, 8GB System Memory)

  3. FrankieCorrigan at 5:02am 21st August 2010 I cracked it, hopefully this will work for you guys too.... I'm sure you've all read about re-installing iTunes 64-bit after uninstalling it bit by bit in the correct order, but what they dont tell you is you need to manually go to the folder "C:Program Files (x86)Common Files" and delete the AppleMobile Device Support folder entirely, then re-install iTunes 64-bit The problem beforehand was that when trying to re-install it, this programme rolls back during the process because of the exsisting folder. Delete it before installing and hey presto!
  4. anoman at 6:19pm 3rd August 2010 I just waited hours for my iphone to sync with my pc on windows 7 64 bit and my whole music library just got trashed. The whole thing got whipped from my phone. Luckily I have a backup else where. Apple is rubbish!!
  5. chasgold at 1:09am 6th July 2010 Same problem here. Brand new and very clean Windows 7 i5-750 machine and even after loading up the latest iTunes for 64-bit, my phone is still not recognized. I don't understand how Apple can allow this problem to go on for a year now. Is this to punish folks for buying a new Windows machine and not switching to a Mac? Anybody have a good fix yet? Besides a dual boot machine? BTW, the apple forum is up to 31 pages! http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageI... you would think that somebody from Apple would notice!
  6. Chess at 3:59am 30th June 2010 I have an overclocked Asus i7 and once I went past iTunes 9.0 I started having this same problem. Reload 9.0 from backup and all would be good. However to move to OS 4 I had to upgrade iTunes. Now I find that the problem is back. I plug my 3G in and iTunes comes up but is frozen for 20+ sec then unfreezes, but does not recognize the iPhone (Windows does and I get the pop up to select actions). What seems to be working for me is to load the processor with tasks before plugging in iPhone. I normally use 3 threads of prime95 to load the CPU. Then when I plug in the iPhone iTunes finds it and then I stop prime95 and the sync works correctly. It is almost like a timing loop exists that is being processed too fast when a processor is above the 3.2GHz ; However once the iPhone is found by iTunes - as long as you don't unplug it, you can sync as many times as you wish. So with all the other suggested fixes - you might try loading your CPU if the others have not worked and see if my suggestion works for you.
  7. Babydoll at 8:38am 27th June 2010 I have just bought a new laptop with Windows 7 installed, and I can't even install itunes. have tried several different things to fix this problem to no avail. Can someone please help!!!!!
  8. Sara at 10:10pm 21st June 2010 I initially thought this was an issue with my phone, not my computer, but now I see otherwise. My 3G was acting up so the Apple store just gave me a replacement. iTunes recognized it the very first time I connected it, but after that, it never recognized it (but Windows did see it as a camera). Three iTunes updates ago, it suddenly let me sync my phone again. The next update, iTunes stopped recognizing my phone =( Another update is out now, but I hear it nukes the internet on 64-bit Windows 7 so I'm not going to try it. I'm at work now but I'll try the bonjour thing when I get home and let you know if it works for me.
  9. Tara at 10:31am 17th June 2010 I'm having a similar issue, however, iTunes recognizes my iPhone, and all the data is visible, but nothing can be "clicked" on. The error I get is that there was an "error in writing to the device." I don't have this problem on my XP machines, just Win 7. HELP~!!
  10. tgbarra at 12:26am 2nd May 2010 I am experiencing the same problem with a brand new Win 7 64 bit HP Computer. When installing the "64" bit Itunes I get an error message that the software I am trying to install is 32 bit. I agree that the "64" bit software is not actually '64".

Pls advise if you have a fix. Thanks.
  11. Ken at 5:33am 24th April 2010 A patchy "soon". This is now late April and I still have this hassle. Any solutions known by anyone anywhere? ....... Please! Ken
  12. Patty at 2:45pm 21st April 2010 I upgraded my itunes a week ago and is not recognizing my iphone, not sycronizing the times it does show up. Adds an MT something drive and now my computer is slow, and its brand new. I've very very upset with apple, I truly hope they come out with an update.
  13. zipzac at 5:27am 5th March 2010 Exact same pc config n same problem
  14. angelitosing at 5:08am 28th February 2010 i checked first with the compatibility of windows 7 and it was ok. after installing the new os, it could not detect my i-pod nano. yes im using the 64 bit win 7 on a dual core.
  15. Alix Vincent at 10:54pm 27th January 2010 I resolved my Iphone/Itunes issue with win 7 (64) by placing a PCI cheap $15 USB card on my ASUS P55 board. Itunes now sees and syncs with I-phone.
    1. Noah at 10:27pm 20th June 2010 Alix, I have an ASUS laptop. Are you saying the the problem is in the USB hardware, rather than the software?
  16. Jim at 11:56am 24th January 2010 I don't believe that the 64-bit version of iTunes is actually 64-bit. I downloaded the iTunes 9.0.2 64-bit installer from Apple and installed it. It wanted to put it in the Program Files (x86) folder, where 32-bit programs go. I changed the location, no problem there. But when I run iTunes and check Task Manager, iTunes show up with a *32 next to it like all other 32-bit programs running on 64-bit Windows 7. I think they want you to think it's 64-bit when it's not. It might be able to be installed and run on 64-bit, but the app itself is not 64-bit.
  17. nofanofSteveJobsbizpractices at 9:45am 17th January 2010 i've been running into probs with my iPhone connecting and reconnecting to my Dell laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate 64. in each instance, it was attempting to download pictures that have already been downloaded.

i stopped the bonjour service and it seems to have solved this problem. will see it it holds..
  18. Mark F at 11:32am 14th January 2010 I have a solution for this issue, it works flawlessly on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7:

  19. Lawrence at 8:22am 14th January 2010 May be Apple think they are too big now and they don't listen to any consumer reporting issue with their product. Or they are out source too much and really lossing track of the issue.
  20. Jonny Dillon at 8:19am 14th January 2010 I'm not sure if the problem I'm having is the same:
I have the newest version of iTunes (64-bit) on my Windows 7 64-bit and it works fine and recognises my other iPods (older models). The only thing that isn't working is when I plug in my iTouch (2nd gen) iTunes comes up and says "This iPod is not compatable with this version. Please install the 64-bit version of iTunes" Which I have done many times, but still it keeps saying that only for my iTouch :(
    Any ideas? :D
  21. trevorb at 2:15pm 13th January 2010 Update: Uninstalled Bonjour (which I wouldn't use anyway) and itunes recognizes my phone. It still doesn't show up in my list of devices, but I can live with that.
  22. trevorb at 2:12pm 13th January 2010 Same issue here, fresh build of Win7 64bit, latest version of the 64bit iTunes on the site. Pretty frusterating.
  23. maryjojo12 at 12:21pm 13th January 2010 I'm having the same problems with my ipod touch 1g and windows 7 64-bit. I tried every supportsite on the apple site and I've tried so much. Itunes is just working fine with me, but my computer just doesn't recognizes the ipod (not even as a camera). When I connect my Ipod, it says it has to install drivers and then he fails to install them. There is also no amds in services.
  24. newbie at 2:58pm 6th January 2010 Try to install the "XP Mode"if you have Ultimate, Pro or Enterprise version of WIN 7 and within Virtual PC enviroment install the 32 bit version of the latest Itunes and.. there you go.. :)
  25. JD at 7:47am 6th January 2010 I was/am having the exact problems mentioned. I have Windows 7 Pro x64, iTunes 9.0.2.25, and a month-old iPhone 3GS. I do not have a P55 mobo.

Apple tech support was virtually unable to help. They did suggest I install iTunes on a 32-bit system, connect the phone to it, do a full reset, rename the phone, then reconnect it to Win7. I did that (it took forever). The 0xE8000065 error is now gone and I can sync most of the time.
I still get "iTunes was unable to load dataclass information from Sync Services. Reconnect or try again later." every time I connect. But after I close the error, most of the time the iPhone is accessible in iTunes.

For the past 2 days I have had terrible luck, however. I really wish Apple would fix this. A patch isn't going to cut it since this is a problem that has existed in one way or the other since iTunes v7.
  26. paulinohio at 2:09pm 22nd December 2009 Windows 7, IPOD Touch 2nd gen, ITunes 9 ,,,, and they don't recognize. It is frustrating.
  27. Donna Lovell at 11:59am 21st December 2009 I downloaded iTunes 64bit for my new computer with Windows7 and iTunes works on the computer but I get an error message that says the software needed to sycn with ipod and iphone was not installed correctly. I've tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it and getting the same message. Sounds like I'm not the only one with a Windows7/iTunes issue.
  28. upsidedownpi at 10:35pm 11th December 2009 Yes, I downloaded iTunes 9.2 for Win 7 64bit but they still don't mesh well on my machine (like they did for 3 years prior to Win 7). I too like both W7 and iTunes and will keep trying...
  29. Ian Bell at 5:11pm 6th November 2009 I was told there was an update to iTunes last night, anyone try it?
  30. DreamEFX at 4:48pm 6th November 2009 Yeah, i'm having the same problem. Windows 7 64bit, ASUS P55 Mobo, Core i7 CPU. Sucks big time.
  31. f1n0 at 6:34am 6th November 2009 same here. use p55 to. everytime i plug my iph.
  32. Tim Harris at 6:41pm 4th November 2009 Having issues with iTunes 9 and Windows 7 64-bit not being able to play Apple "DRM" content on network. Could always do this on my XP 32-bit install. Guess this is all to be expected.
  33. Skippy at 5:08pm 4th November 2009 I am running Window 7 64 bit and iTunes 9 64 bit and I am having the same problem. My motherboard is an Nvidia chipset. I was running Vista 64bit and iTunes 9 64 bit on this same hardware without issue. Who is to blame - Apple or Microsoft? I love Windows 7 and iTunes. Can't we all just get along?
    1. Ian Bell at 5:14pm 4th November 2009 My guess is that it is an Apple issue and they will need to release an update. Don't you think its a little coincidental that there is a incompatibility problem right when Microsoft releases Windows 7? I agree, those two just need to get along! Skippy, what is happening with your system? Is it exactly what this story was about?
  34. Ian Bell at 10:26pm 2nd November 2009 Looks like it's a problem with the Intel P55 chipset. Intel is looking into the problem, and hopefully Apple will have a patch soon.
  35. Esbjorn Larsen at 9:42pm 2nd November 2009 I had the same problems and I will be installing a dual-boot system and add Vista 32-bit to my existing Windows 7 64 bit for this purpose. I don't have time to figure out how to come up with hacks to fix it. I'll just wait until Apple gets it right! Another vendor that is not working is ATI. My ATI Theater 650 Pro PCIe card does not work either in WMC due to ATI not supporting Win7 64 bit yet. I don't get why vendors are not faster picking this up.
    1. Ian Bell at 10:14pm 2nd November 2009 That sounds like overkill, I am sure Apple will be releasing a patch soon.
