LG has been steadily leaking details about the new hardware it intends to release at Mobile World Congress at the end of the month. We’ve seen brightly-colored packages, less-than-subtle hints at how many new products we can expect, and a video teaser trailer too. Despite all this build-up, the company has officially announced a few of the phones we were expecting to arrive at the Barcelona show, such as the new Optimus L Series II handsets. Now it has given us the Optimus G Pro.

Hold on, you may be thinking, that’s already been announced. Yes, indeed it has, but LG has announced a second model and just to confuse everyone, it hasn’t changed the name. The new Optimus G Pro is differentiated by a larger screen – just as the leaks predicted – which measures 5.5-inches and it has a 1080p resolution.

According to the press release, LG has slimmed down the bezel on either side of the display in an attempt to keep the handset as compact as possible, however it hasn’t provided any dimensions with which we can compare it to the 5-inch Optimus G Pro or its primary challenger, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. LG has also kept quiet on the new model’s overall specification, although it’s believed not to have altered in any other way over its smaller sister phone.

If that’s the case, the big screen Optimus G Pro will be powered by a quad-core Snapdragon processor with a clock speed of 1.7GHz and 2GB of RAM, with a 13-megapixel camera on the rear and Google Android 4.1 Jelly Bean running the show. While the 5-inch Optimus G Pro is headed only for Japan at the moment, the 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro will be released at the end of February, however as the press release is in Korean we’re guessing it’ll only be out in Korea.

That could all change at Mobile World Congress, as the 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro is rumored to be one of the four new devices launched there, along with either three new F Series phones or the already half-announced L Series II range.

The Realme X50 Pro 5G sets the bar for affordable flagships in 2020
realme x50 pro 5g hands on features price photos release date back

Take a good look at the Realme X50 Pro 5G, as it’s representative of what we really wanted to see at MWC 2020, should it have gone ahead. It’s a reasonably priced smartphone with 5G, but crucially it's not a midrange, reasonably priced 5G phone, it’s a high-spec, practically flagship level, reasonably priced 5G phone.

How much? It’s 600 euros, or about $650, which makes it just a little more than the 4G OnePlus 7T. Realme is a relative newcomer to the smartphone world, yet has matured very quickly. The X50 Pro 5G is its most impressive phone yet, and we've given it a try.
Design
The Realme X50 Pro 5G steals a lot of its good looks from the Huawei P30 Pro. The quad-lens camera sits in the top left of the glass rear panel, which is neatly curved at the sides, leading into the rounded metal chassis's edges. There is a slightly sharp joint where the two sections meet, which I tended to rub with my finger after I’d noticed. You don’t feel it against your palm though. I love the smooth, matte finish of the phone as it provides a degree of grip without sacrificing the cool, pleasing feel of glass.

A 5G version of the OnePlus 7T Pro exists, but it’s a limited T-Mobile exclusive
OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition

We assumed we weren't going to see a 5G phone in the new OnePlus 7T lineup. It seems that prediction was premature. T-Mobile and OnePlus announced on Wednesday that a 5G version of the OnePlus 7T Pro McClaren Edition will be coming exclusively to the Un-carrier later this year.

The snappily named OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McClaren Edition will use T-Mobile's 600 MHZ 5G network, which T-Mobile claims is ahead of schedule and well on course to becoming the first company to offer nationwide 5G coverage in the U.S.

Testing Sprint’s 5G speeds on the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G in New York City
OnePlus 7 Pro 5G

The cheapest 5G smartphone you can buy on Sprint is the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, but that's "cheap" only when compared to other 5G phones available on the carrier -- like the LG V50 ThinQ and the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, both of which cost $1,000 or more. The OnePlus 7 Pro 5G is $840, and its launch is tied to Sprint's latest wave of 5G cities: New York City, Washington D.C., Phoenix, and Los Angeles.
