This animated video about smartphone addiction is the best we’ve seen

謝承霖 《低头人生》 Life Smartphone
This animated video is the best representation of smartphone addiction — and its harmful effects — we’ve seen. It’s definitely not the first of its kind, but it does have something most others do not — humor. Plus, it neatly avoids being preachy, a cardinal sin of which most other examples of the genre are guilty.

Apparently produced by Xie Chenglin, a student at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in China, the video shows people going about their daily lives with heads bowed down, obsessed with what’s happening on their smartphone. Except the heads aren’t subtly looking down. The characters are viciously deformed, animated in an exaggerated way to emphasize the severity of the problem — and where human evolution could lead if we don’t change for the better.

The characters walk through life not noticing, understanding, or caring about the chaos and pain caused by their lack of attention. One particularly cute cat suffers in a most unfortunate way. Sure, it’s all way over the top, but it highlights the problem of becoming engrossed in the device we hold in our hands, rather than paying attention to the world around us as well.

The short also comments on the kind of people we’re becoming. One character, who comes across both an injured individual and a car accident, takes a variety of increasingly narcissistic selfies rather than helping out. No, it’s not a common reaction to such a situation in the real world, but selfies with disasters as the background have been a worrying trend recently.

Is the animation telling you to put down your phone and do something else instead? No, not really. It’s a satirical look at the extreme end of the spectrum. No one really behaves like this, but sometimes we need a reminder that it’s best not to only concentrate on our phones. When this is done without chastising the viewer for their supposed bad behavior, the message actually gets through.

This may be the strangest iPhone mod we’ve ever seen
A modded iPhone with a Lightning and USB-C port on the bottom.

Apple is rumored to be working on an iPhone with USB-C this year, but creative users have taken matters into their own hands and created their own USB-C-equipped iPhones. The latest of such mods is by an engineer who created an iPhone with both a USB-C port and a Lightning port side by side.

The iPhone mod comes from an engineer on YouTube. Using an iPhone 12 mini (though presumably, any iPhone would work), the engineer added another port to the iPhone. This means that not only is this modded iPhone capable of using the modern USB-C standard, but it can also do something as simple as listening to music through wired headphones while charging. Apple's iPhones are capable of playing music through the Lightning port, so any combination of USB-C and Lightning-wired headphones or charger would work.

The next iPhone SE may have the biggest design change we’ve ever seen
Yellow iPhone XR resting on a bench

Apple is reportedly bringing back the iPhone XR's design for the next iPhone SE. The report comes from noted analyst Ross Young at Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSSC) via MacRumors.  Young had previously believed that the fourth-gen iPhone SE would have an Android-style hole-punch cutout on the front and a display size ranging between 5.7 inches to 6.1 inches.

Young now expects that Apple will stick to a 6.1-inch design, while also bringing the notch to an iPhone SE model for the first time. The phone is expected to be based on an iPhone XR, with Apple keeping the iPhone SE's rear camera as a solo act for the fourth year running. There's also reportedly no OLED or ProMotion expected here either. And with the notch making an appearance, we can safely assume the next iPhone SE will support Face ID instead of Touch ID. There's simply no space for the traditional Touch ID sensor on the iPhone XR's body, and recent reports from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg note that Apple has no appetite for building Touch ID into the power button on iPhones as it does on iPads.
