Denver resident Bill Jordan hadn’t even heard of an iPad last week. He knew that Apple had released a hot new product and that his company wanted him to go pick one up as a gift for a customer, but that is it. One trip to the mall later and Jordan was out roughly $500, the iPad he had just bought, and a finger.
On his way out of the Cherry Creek Mall, an unidentified thief ran up behind Jordan and grabbed the bag with the iPad. The strings had been wrapped around Jordan’s fingers, and the thief pulled the bag free- along with all the skin on the upper part of Jordan’s pinky, right down to the bone. Doctors were later forced to amputate the top of Jordan’s finger.
“I kind of wrapped it around my fingers so I didn’t drop it on the way out,” he told a local Denver TV station “It was a heavy duty bag they put it in, and had real thick cords.”
After the damage had been done, Jordan rushed to the food court for napkins to stem the bleeding, while the thief made his escape. Police have yet to capture the man in question, although the entire robbery was captured on tape. Metro Denver Crimestoppers are offering a $2,000 reward for the man in question.
Jordan gave the news station a message for the thief, “I hope you understand what you have done to me and to my family’s life – for a simple piece of apparatus that will be junk in a couple of years.”
Scroll down for video of the incident, but please no jokes about the iPad costing an arm and a leg (or a finger), or about Jordan giving the man the finger.
Well I am on my iPad right now at home, even though my main PC is up against the iPad, it is that close, but yet I still prefer to use the iPad instead as I am addicted to it. That being said, it does not support (play) the above video file at all. That sucks.
The problem here is that had the man should have activated the iPad inside an Apple Store retail location, a complimentary service that any representative will do for you free of charge. Then, he should have opted in to the 60 day trial of MobileMe, Apple's own exclusive software that can instantly track the location of the iPad and be able to follow the robber on a map on your computer. You can also instantly lock the device, or instantly erase everything on the device, as well as set off a two-minute alarm sound when remotely activated, and even post messages on the screen of the iPad screen while it is locked, siren sounding loud, and tracking it through GPS. This should some how end up in the recovery of your iPad should something horrible like this happen again.
Just so you know, the iPad that has the 3G data modem installed on it will provide a much higher accuracy of pin-point location using GPS and cell tower triangulation location, providing complete indoor location as well as optimum outdoor locationing.
I also see that the Apple Store gives you special bags that have a rope for a draw-string on top. You are able to barely see an item within these bags especially if the package is pressed up against the plastic bag. I advise to wear a back-pack in to the store and after purchase, secure the expensive device inside of your back-pack and close it up and wear it out of the store. Or at least put it in another bag or something, anything.
Always be very aware of your surroundings at all times. Use your ears to listen for footsteps behind you and make sure to periodically glance behind you looking for potential bad people. Suddenly switch directions and head straight towards any group of people that you know of if you even have a slight idea that something might not be right here. Just please be very aware at all times. And if something happens, try to get the best physical description of the person that you can. Think SAFETY.
I'm sorry about this man and his loss. A lesson for everyone else too.
