Motorola Droid Quantum and Xplay could be follow-ups to the Moto X

How does Motorola follow the Moto X? The little phone is the first to be produced by the company following its acquisition by Google, having cleared the decks of existing hardware such as the Droid Ultra beforehand, and if handled correctly, could signify Motorola’s resurgence in the smartphone world. A new rumor has named two devices which Motorola could be working on, the Motorola Droid Quantum and the Motorola Xplay.

Sadly, there’s no information on the Quantum at all, but we’d be surprised if the name was anything other than a codename. LG has already released a phone named Quantum. Running Windows Phone 7 and otherwise known as the Optimus 7Q, it was among the first bunch of Windows Phones back in 2010.

Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside has previously said he wants to introduce a cheaper version of the Moto X for the prepay market in the United States, but the Quantum is unlikely to be it. According to the rumor, the phone may be the successor to the Droid Ultra, and therefore potentially a Verizon exclusive.

The Xplay is rumored to be a Motorola smartphone/tablet hybrid with a screen measuring 6.3-inches. This makes slightly smaller than the Xperia Z Ultra, but identical to the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, and Motorola’s first phablet. It’s a genre which is rapidly growing in popularity, with everyone from Nokia to HTC chasing after Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3, the current phablet champion.

Although the Xplay name sounds plausible, again, someone has beaten Motorola to it. Chinese manufacturer Vivo produces a phablet called the Xplay, a 5.7-inch smartphone with a Snapdragon 600 processor and a 13-megapixel camera. There is a pretty popular video game show named X-Play, too. So, if the Xplay is coming, the name probably won’t stick.

Does this mean the rumors are false? No, but take them as very unofficial at the moment, and for the names to be changed before they’re properly announced.

Motorola has been very active lately with launches in the mobile segment ranging from entry-level to high-end devices. Now it looks like the race for the first Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 smartphone is heating up and Motorola is trying to get the upper hand by being the first to launch a smartphone with the new chipset. The Lenovo-owned smartphone maker has confirmed that it will be announcing an Edge smartphone with Qualcomm’s latest flagship chip on December 9. This is likely to be the Moto Edge X30 (or just Motorola Edge), but there’s also a possibility of the Motorola G200 launching at the same time.

The teaser doesn’t reveal much more about the device, and a lot is still under wraps, but there are some tidbits that we can gather from the phone’s certification. For starters, its battery certification shows a 5,000mAh cell with a charging capacity of 68.2W, which is one of the highest in Motorola phones. Consumers in China are likely to have many choices in terms of storage as there are reportedly 6GB/8GB/12GB/16GB RAM and 128GB/256GB/512GB storage options. Chen Jin, Lenovo China’s head of mobile division, also revealed that the phone has Gorilla Glass protection on both sides as well as the latest My UX 3.0 software.

Motorola’s new Moto G Power (2022) keeps long battery life, adds better camera

The Moto G Power (2022) is officially the newest part of Motorola's Moto G family, and the successor to the Moto G Power (2021) that we reviewed early this year. As our review of the earlier model noted, all the key selling points are here, like the long-lasting three-day battery life, huge display, and sturdy design. But on top of that, Motorola also appears to have addressed our complaints about the weak camera performance and mediocre panel, by significantly beefing up both, though it still hasn't brought 5G to the device likely to keep it under $200.

To start with, the new G Power features a 6.5-inch 1600 x 720 IPS display with a 90Hz refresh rate, meaning everything will be smoother than last year's 60Hz panel. It's still not really a bump up from 720p -- 1080p would have been nice given the big screen, but it'll still feel a lot better to use. In terms of weight and dimensions, it's about the same size and tips the scale at about 203 grams. The design is fairly sturdy and is IP52 water-repellent, however, it is not technically waterproof, so don't fully immerse it.

A new Motorola smartwatch is on its way as renders and specs of the Moto Watch 100 leaked online in advance of its anticipated launch. CE Brands, the current owner of Motorola-branded smartwatches, has already said it has completed work on a Moto Watch 100, which is tipped to be an affordable offering.

The latest development comes from 91Mobiles. The publication has shared renders and purported specs of the upcoming Moto Watch 100. It reveals a circular display with a minimalistic design. The right edge seems to house two buttons with a metallic finish, while the watch body could have a matte finish. It might appear from the renders that the Moto Watch 100 could sport a rotating bezel, but the report says the device will not have that feature.
