Motorola Sheds Another 4,000 Jobs

Motorola has announced it's cutting 4,000 jobs, adding to the 3,000 announced last year.

Things are bad at the Mobile Devices division at Motorola. It’s lost over $2.7 billion since the beginning of 2007 as it’s lost ground to competitors. Last year the company announced 3,000 layoffs, and now it’s adding to the misery by shedding another 4,000 staff.

According to Information Week, Motorola hasn’t issued a successful handset since the Razr, which sold 110 units, and now it lies in fourth place among manufacturers. At one point the Mobile Devices division was going to become a separate business, but that’s been put on hold as the company focuses on a Google Android phone due in the second half of this year.

In a statement, co-CEO Sanjay Jha said:

"The actions we are taking today in our Mobile Devices business will allow us to further reduce our cost structure and positions us for improved financial performance in 2009. Together with these actions and the announcements made in the fourth quarter, the Mobile Devices business expects to recognize annual cost savings of approximately $1.2 billion in 2009."
