It's not just the iPad: Netflix is telling customers to "stay tuned" for Netflix on the iPhone and the iPod touch.
One of the “killer apps” available for Apple’s new iPad at launch was a Netflix application, enabling Netflix subscribers to watch a selection of television shows and movies on the device, along with managing their queues and rating items. Now, in a brief blog post, Netflix VP of corporate communications Steve Swasey has confirmed the company plans to bring Netflix to the iPhone and iPod touch as well. No dates or specific features have been announced—such as whether the iPhone version would enable users to stream video to the device over 3G data service rather than only via Wi-Fi.
If the application follows Netflix’s pattern for offering streaming to other devices and services, users will not have to pay separately to stream Netflix content to their iPhones. So far, Netflix has bundled all streaming into its existing subscription plans, rather than binding them to a particular device or platform. Customer who subscribe to Netflix and are eligible for streaming service can tap into it from any Netflix-capable device, whether that be a TiVo set-top box, a PC, and iPad, or something else.
Given that no date and capabilities have been announced, some industry watchers speculate a Netflix application may be on tap for Apple’s April 8 press event to preview iPhone OS 4.
