Nokia may introduce Lytro-like camera on its Lumia phones

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: for so many smartphone users, the quality of the camera is one of the top features considered when deciding which device to purchase. And manufacturers are constantly trying to one-up the competition, coming out with new, innovative features to help retain, and draw in, customers.

Once the leader the pack, and working hard to make a comeback in a major way, Nokia is supposedly working on a way to take the lead in the smartphone camera world, according to an earlier report by Bloomberg.

As it is, the Finland-based company is already working on integrating a whopping 41-megapixel camera into its flagship Lumia phones. But this camera could potentially outshine even that. (Particularly since so many people argue that that so many megapixels are unnecessary in a phone’s camera.)

It appears that Nokia is investing in Pelican Imaging, a company that is working on array cameras, which uses multiple optics and combines them together to form a single image. It’s a process that isn’t all that much unlike what the Lytro camera does, except it’s, of course, much more slimmed down.

Not familiar with Lytro? It’s a camera that was introduced to the market late 2011 and completely changed the way people think about digital photography. Essentially, you point and shoot a photo, and then focus later. The camera captures all aspects of the image it’s taking, and lets you choose (and later change, if wanted) the area of focus, after the fact.

And this feature may be coming to Nokia phones down the road. (How great would that be, considering how many blurry images we all manage to take while quickly trying to snap a shot of something we stumble upon before it’s too late?)

Will it be enough to help put the mobile company back on top? Who knows? But for those that have stayed loyal to the brand, their mobile upload photos just may end up looking a whole lot better than they have.

Nokia’s new G300 may be the most affordable 5G phone in the U.S.

HMD Global is releasing the Nokia G300, its most affordable 5G phone yet, and possibly one of the cheapest ones to ever launch in North America. Releasing on October 19, the phone will cost $199 and come in a charcoal color. However, it can only be purchased from the sellers Tracfone Wireless and Straight Talk Wireless. Nokia's already announced and released six other phones across three series in 2021.

Xiaomi might introduce a 200-megapixel camera with its next Ultra phone

Xiaomi has never been a company to shy away from outlandish specs, and a new report claims its next Ultra phone just might stay in that lane. The company is said to be considering a 200-megapixel camera (MP) for the next Xiaomi Ultra phone, according to Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo. The current Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra has a massive 50MP camera. While more pixels don't necessarily equate to better photos, the company has proven its photography chops enough to earn the benefit of the doubt.

With summer coming to a close, it's time for leaks of 2022's flagship phones to begin to emerge. We've already gotten a taste of the Samsung Galaxy S22. With Xiaomi's phones coming first, there have been reports that the company will continue to push the limits of its ultra-premium handsets. According to Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi's 12 series will come in three models, as the previous series did. They'll all be powered by the Snapdragon 898, but the company's most impressive feature will be the camera.

Oppo has revealed its latest Under Screen Camera (USC), which it hopes will eventually replace the notch or hole-punch cutout on a smartphone, and hide the selfie camera beneath the screen instead. The company claims its USC has the “perfect balance between screen and camera quality,” and has released two selfies taken with the camera for proof.

It’s not the first of its type we’ve seen. Oppo has already had a go at getting the complicated tech right and showed its first version at MWC Shanghai in 2019. It didn’t go on to debut on a smartphone, but ZTE has released not one but two devices — the Axon 20 5G and the Axon 30 5G — with Under Screen Cameras, although neither has made much of an impact internationally.
