The last post was right in flagging the threat from the coming explosion in 'wifi' and 'WiMax' (which will be able to send a signal from a home base station to a laptop several kilometers away). Much like the tobacco industry we will probably go through a period of denial before we start to concede that radiation from our newer technologies is hurting us.

My own 'awakening' regarding the strength of signals from mobiles came when I was once logged on to the net using my mobile phone (operating system was pocket PC). My wife just happened to touch the back of my hand and she said that she could feel vibration and heat. We did a number of tests – with her eyes shut, she could tell when I was connected to the net and when I wasn't just by touching the back of my hand. Is this dangerous? I dont know, but it is certainly disconcerting!

I can understand the cellphone being a much needed thing in the case of an emergency, i.e., broken car late at night in a scary place, but that's about it.

I do not own a mobile phone and don't care if I ever do. I think it's a menace to some degree. I'm assulted by idiot drivers oblivious to their surroundings every day on my drive into work while they're yapping away, putting a Band-Aid on their toxic loneliness.

Ok, maybe that's a good thing for those people who cannot stand silence and the sound of their own mind. They now have a constant distraction. It's surely cheaper than psychotherapy.

I've turned off the wireless card on my computer and use only the ethernet cable for network use. In addition to being safer for my health, it's safer for my data (more secure connection = better privacy protection).

Actually, it would be an inverse cube law, not inverse square, which means distancing yourself from the antenna is even more effective at reducing radiation. Point sources that emit radiation in all directions follow an inverse cube pattern; sources that just emit radiation toward you like a TV follow an inverse square law.

Any tecnology has it's advantages and disadvanges. The impact of the radiation and its relation with cancer it's possible, as UV radiation is clearly associated with certain forms of skin cancer. The problem with mobile phones is that radiation can not be seen. But each of us have several chemicals at home far more dangerous (seen as cancer cause) than the mobiles.
The amount of energy used by the mobiles is about mW while the power of the oven is over 800 W. So stadistacally the effect of the radiation as a cancer cause is minimal, which doesn't mean that it can't be associated with certain cases, as Cathy Ross states.

Tecnology is not bad or good. It depends on the way it is used. And I mean this because children should not use mobile phones for long time.
I don't either recomend the use of bluetooth headsets as they radiate similar amount of energy and as they are less regulated I wouldn't trust in them having good electromagnetic isolation.

The theory of Dr Lai is just a weak theory. Medioambiental changes such as humidity, temperature and enviromental changes are far more probable responsibles of changes that microwave radiations.
