In a week’s time, we’ll know all there is about Samsung’s next Galaxy smartphone, but just so we don’t forget it’s coming (as if that was likely) Samsung has announced the processor it says will be powering the device.
The Exynos 4 Quad, as the name suggests, is a quad-core processor with a 1.4Ghz clock speed, and according to the press release it will be “adopted first into Samsung’s Galaxy smartphone that will officially be announced in May.”
The event to which it refers will take place on May 3 in London, and aside from the invitation, this is the first piece of confirmed information on the phone we’ve seen.
Quad-core power has long been rumored though, along with other features such as a large AMOLED touchscreen, a 12-megapixel camera and a ceramic chassis.
Samsung’s new Exynos chip has twice the power of the dual-core model, but consumes 20-percent less energy, which should go some way to avoiding what most fear concerning quad-core power — even worse battery life than a dual-core phone.
It’s based on the ARM Cortex-A9 architecture, which is the same as Nvidia’s Tegra 3, but it uses a 32nm low-power manufacturing process as opposed to the Tegra 3‘s 40nm, to ensure maximum power efficiency.
Features and performance
It will be capable of playing and recording 1080p video at 30fps, and has an HDMI 1.4 interface for sending images to a bigger screen. Samsung use 3D gaming, video editing and “calculation-intensive” tasks as examples of where the chip excels.
Interestingly, the Exynos 4 Quad has exactly the same footprint and pin layout as the older Exynos 4 Dual, so other manufacturers can “immediately adopt the new solution without additional engineering efforts.”
While Apple straight away springs to mind, this also indicates Samsung will be going ahead with rumored plans to offer the new processor to other manufacturers too.
The device was listed as the Galaxy S III, equipped with a 4.7-inch, 1280 x 720 touchscreen, a 12-megapixel camera and Android 4.0, plus the Exynos 1.4Ghz chip. It managed to top the chart, beating the Tegra 3-powered Asus Transformer Prime.
It’s slightly odd that the Exynos chip’s model number is listed as the 4212, as the Exynos 4 Quad was set to be the 4412; and there seems to be considerable confusion over which model number is correct. Samsung’s own page doesn’t mention the model number, but if you look carefully at the official demo video around the 35-second mark, you can see the chip being tested is the Exynos 4212.
With the above specifications matching what we’ve already heard, all we need to see is the Galaxy S III’s new design, so roll on May 3
