Of course, now that all the pre-launch fuss surrounding the new iPad is over, if you listen carefully you can hear the sound of something else; something cranking ever so slowly into action. You got it — it’s the iPhone 5 rumor mill, which from now until launch date, whenever that may be, will be presenting Apple smartphone fans with a dazzling variety of will-it-won’t-it possibilities, in the process whipping up a frenzy of expectation so head-spinningly crazy that when the device does finally hit the shelves with its spanking new this or spiffing new that you’ll be first in line, eyes bulging, mouth drooling, sweat pouring, ready to hand over your hard-earned dollars in order to have that darn handset in your possession. Or something like that.
So here goes. The new iPhone will have an enormous 4.6-inch Retina display, a Reuters report claimed on Wednesday. It also said the device would be launched “around the second quarter” and that the Cupertino company had already placed orders with its display suppliers, LG Display and Samsung.
Reuters obtained its story from South Korean newspaper Maeil Business, which received its information from an “unnamed industry source.” All a bit vague then.
It’s widely expected that the next iteration of Apple’s big-selling handset will come with a larger screen, but exactly how big is the question. A 4.6-inch screen, as the report suggests, would be a significant jump from the current 3.5-inch display. Apple enthusiast site MacRumors is skeptical.
“There have been persistent rumors that the next generation iPhone would carry a larger 4-inch screen,” it says. “We are convinced that Apple had exactly such designs in late prototype stages in China. The proliferation of iPhone cases with measurements of at least a 4-inch screen seemed to suggest that a number of suppliers were also convinced of that fact.”
The suggested second quarter introduction date would fit with the launch dates of earlier versions of the phone, except the iPhone 4S, which was unveiled just last October. Would Apple really launch another handset so soon after the 4S hit the market? Or might they give it a year and wait till October before showing it off?
Of course, it might be that Apple’s next handset isn’t even called the iPhone 5. It might well follow the iPad’s path and be launched as simply the new iPhone. No doubt there’ll be a rumor circulating about that shortly.
Andy Boxall would you be able to tell the difference between 316ppi and 326 for really? Getting anal are we?
What to do about the iPhone 4s?
As a android user and a droid x owner at the time of the late Steve Jobs jab at large displays, I find it very amusing how mindless the Apple sheep flock is. Yet another example of how apple is playing catch up. Let the iphanboi’s rant and rave, but the facts are the facts, and Apple is following androids lead.
Sonny Perry – We RARELY post rumors, and only those coming from credible sources. This one came from Reuters
FAIL!!!
I must have the biggest pockets in the world because the Galaxy Note fits just fine in mine. I think a 4.6inch screen size would be fantastic. That being said, I don’t see Apple making the jump from 3.5 to 4.6 in one generation. I agree with most of the others that 4-4.3 is where I think it will land.
How big is the screen on the Note?
5.3inchs
Incredible. So you can fit those into your big MC Hammer pants!? lol You are going to need duffel bag sized pockets for that baby!
I thought you knew that Hammer Pants were making a come back? I’m just not hip with those skinny jeans that you kids all love so much!
Only iPhone hipster users have skinny jeans….sheesh I thought you knew that! \
So the 4.6″ iPhone is going to single handily take down the whole skinny jeans industry?
agree with you.. they wont jump all the way into 4.6.. knowing apple it will take few more generations to have a phone that big…..
Andy Boxall would you be able to tell the difference between 316ppi and 326 for really? Getting anal are we?
They leak/start these stories to arouse interest. As if a billion downloads is not enough, as if their LARGE corner of the market isn’t enough. Just release the damn thing and say what you have to say and be done with it.
Come on man!!!! Stop with all the frigin rumors!! I subscribe to your page for the real, not the unreal!!! I will unsubscribe if you keep it up and suggest others do the same… Stop the madness!!!
Heard that before
i want….. this one!
Playing catchup now?
grrrr… it’s the iPhone 6
1st iPhone
2nd iPhone 3G
3rd iPhone 3GS
4th iPhone 4
5th iPhone 4S
6th iPhone 6
notice how the 3GS is classed as the 3rd generation, confirmed by naming the 4th iPhone 4
I think Apple will likely just call it “New iPhone” haha.
doubt it. Going Galaxy S2 & later S3
4.6 is PERFECT…not as big as a SG Note but around the same size as a SG S2..PERFECT!
4.6″ is PERFECT!…hopefully this is REAL….nothing is keeping me from switching from Android which I’ve had for the past 2 years almost to Apple except the damn screen size…the non removable battery isn’t a big deal…there are more pluses then minus’ for me to switch..I don’t root but i will miss my widgets to a degree..BUT the biggest draw for me is the music quality..I use my android all the time for music….and I can hear the clear difference between androids and apple…….so bring out that 4.6″ to compete against the Galaxy S3
If only you tried install EQ and configure it or installing DSPManager. It would make the sound be fantastic and very comparable or even better then Apple’s Ipod quality sound.
4.3 inches or less is good enough. phones like galaxy note…. too big.
I agree 4″ would be just about right.
^ya, soon my news feed will be filled with iphone rumours.
This was supposed to be the iphone 4 *yahn* we all know it will look the exact same as the 4s, just a quad core processor, 4g service, and MAYBE a higher resolution screen and also maybe a better camera.
higher resolution than retina — why? quad core — again why? so yah, basically, just the same as the 4s, with MAYBE some new software that shouldn’t justify another $400 expense.
4.6 seems large for the iphone, but if it is similar to the picture above I guess it is possible!
Wishful thinking towards competing with the Galaxy S II (and the upcoming S III)?
yawn. we hear this EVERY time before a new iPhone is released. Last time I think it was a 5″ retina display before the 4S/5. no other product except for maybe the iPad has more rumors swirling around it until the actual day it comes out than the iPhone.
and so the rumors start… *sigh*
so weird, was thinking about this today since i need room to draw on draw something ;)
After comparing the Retina Display on my iPhone 4S vs the Retina Display on the new iPad, I have to agree that a larger screen would significantly improve the iPhone. The iPad’s screen just looks better, even though it has a lower pixel density. So the only thing I can attribute the improvement to is the increased size. I know Steve Jobs measured the finger width of every man woman and child to come up with the ideal (read: 3.5-inch) size. But the apps now available, especially games and video, render that assessment outdated. Still, 4.6 inches is just too big. Anything from 4 to 4.3 inches would do.
I bet Apple goes with a 4″ screen, slightly smaller than the current phones, and then boasts twice the resolution and edge-to-edge glass – no bezel. Any takers!?
Except a slight edge is useful to prevent false hits. I doubt they’ll go over 3.8 though. My guess is they’ll stay on the same form factor.
Possibly. I’m there with ya!
I really hope the screen size does see an increase as the iPhone screen is too small for my liking at the moment and I definitely enjoyed the larger size of the Droid X (4.3in), though I’m not sure if I’d like it to be as big as 4.6in.
I also doubt that Apple would make such a radical change in the iPhone’s size, but here’s to hoping
The Droid X is a HUGE phone in my opinion. I’m surprised people can fit it into their pockets.
Regarding the iPhone, imagine how many screens will break when it’s that large. No case in the world would be able to protect that haha.
It’s perfect for me, I definitely think it depends on the person, though. And hopefully screens breaking becomes less of an issue with all the latest advancements in display glass with products like Gorilla Glass
LOL, how SMALL do y’all believe people’s pockets are??? I own a Samsung Infuse and I am absolutely IN LOVE with this phone. The display is INSANE and every iPhone user who has seen my phone IMMEDIATELY gets envious of my screen. I also just don’t get the hype over a phone that is notoriously not customizable. You can’t change your home screen, can’t add widgets… Cant even take your dang battery out. And Apple keeps making you mindless by adding one or 2 features and selling you the same crap you bought last year. SMH. Stick with Samsung. Hopefully, they won’t fall off like HTC did.
4.6-inches just seems too big to me, for any phone out there. I’m shooting from the hip here, but if you were to take the resolution of the new Retina display and calculate it into a 4.6-inch display, what would the resolution there be? A lot of people were speculating that the higher resolution on the new iPad mathematically translated over to the rumored Apple iTV (or whatever they decide to call it) at a resolution that would look good on a 42″+ sized TV. Any way to converge it down into the new iPhone?
The reason why I am asking is because we all know that Apple does not like to confuse developers with multiple resolutions and hardware – they like to minimize all of that and keep standards, something that has plagued Android apps. There are just too many different specs for Android developers to create for.
Agree on the screen size. It’s got to fit in my jeans pocket. I was really hoping for the 4″ size.
No calculations here, but I bet the resolution will be set at 720p resolution with as many pixels-per-inch they can cram in there.
Samsung uses a 720p, 4.65″ screen on the Galaxy Nexus and it has a PPI of 316, which is below the 326ppi of the iPhone 4S.
Instead of 1280 x 720 though, a 1368 x 768 HD resolution used for 720p on TVs would return a PPI of 340 at 4.6-inches, which would match/slightly improve on the 4S.
However, I think it’ll be moot anyway, as I agree with Ian and imagine a 4-inch screen will be used.
They just chose the ‘easy’ route and doubled the density to avoid issues of scaling. No one has mentioned WP8/Metro here (and perhaps as a cue I shouldn’t..), but the solution can be to create the standards that make sense for the platforms, not force the platform to adhere to a forced ‘standard’. Build the support into the OS and the developers need only provide images for appropriate scale, or use vector graphics (something again which should be built into the framework for writing the apps, which for WP8/Metro, is with XAML).
Smart thinking. Makes sense to me Joe.
