Reuters Expanding Cell Phone Service

The established news services is expanding it’s offerings to mobile phone users with a subscription service for breaking news alerts.

Feeding the thirst for instant news, Reuters is offering a new subscription service that promises to deliver breaking news alerts directly to the user’s cell phone.  Also offered for free is a WAP site devoted to the day’s biggest stories, a storefront for downloading a selection of Reuters photos and wallpapers, and even a Reuters-branded ring tone.

The WAP site allows users to browse free top news stories in five categories – Top News, Sports, Entertainment, Business and Oddly Enough.  Photos and wallpapers are free to browse, but cost $2 to download to the phone.

The service is available for $2.99 a month.  This includes 2-3 SMS breaking news alerts a week.  For those interested, signup is available on the web, or by texting keyword NWS to the Reuters shortcode 2KNOW.  Charges will appear on the customer’s wireless bill.
