Samsung’s release of an open-source Android 2.2 update indicates official, carrier-supported versions of Froyo should be on the way soon.

Whether you know it as the Fascinate, Epic 4G, Vibrant or Captivate, Samsung’s Galaxy S is finally ready for an update to Android 2.2, also known as Froyo. Or at least, it is if you have the technical chops.

Samsung’s Open Source Release Center released the source code for the update on Wednesday, meaning techy-savvy Android users can grab the update immediately, and officially sanctioned versions tweaked by carriers should be on the way shortly. A search for GT-I9000 should turn it up at the release center, but Samfirmware mirrors a copy as well (free registration required).

  4. SAD-EPIC at 1:18pm 16th October 2010 Samsung really sucks when it comes to providing updates, 2.2 has been out a year and 3.0 is a couple weeks away and and all us SAMSUNG user sit and wait for samsung to get their act together, (whine/whine) The EVO had it with-in a month of release. Samsung said by mid Sept. Guess what come and gone and no 2.2 . I wouldnt have purchased the EPIC had I known they had KRAPPY software people, seriously, the amount of money they charge for the device you would think they could afford to GET-IT-RIGHT. In other news The Epic Battery life sucks as well, if you turn on everything (blue tooth, 4g, email, txt, wifi tether) your lucky if you get two hours, if you actually need to TALK on the phone for any lenght of time you have under 1hr. They should include a 200' power cable so you could walk around and actually use the phone for longer then an hour. Sorry to be such a hatter but I had high hopes for Samsung and the EPIC (SPH-700) to bad samsung didnt live up to the hype, I wouldnt recommend you steer clear from this device.
