Check out our review of the Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch.

We started the year full of expectation regarding smartwatches, and for a while, it looked like they would be matched after seeing the launch of the Pebble, the Sony SmartWatch 2, and various others. However, the noise has died down over the past few months, thanks to the silence from Google, Apple and Microsoft.

This could all change on September 4, when Samsung could show off the Galaxy Gear, its own smartwatch project. The rumor comes from SamMobile, although no sources are mentioned, where it says the watch will be launched alongside the Galaxy Note 3. We already know the firm is holding its second Unpacked event of the year on that date, making it the ideal venue.

It was back in March when we learned Samsung was working on a smartwatch, when a Samsung vice president confirmed a watch was, “definitely one” of its future products, and that it had been working on the project for some time. Since then, we’ve seen a pair of trademark filings linking the name Galaxy Gear with a wearable device, most likely a watch.

That aside, we don’t know much about the Gear, its design, or its features. As with all smartwatches, it’ll act as a second screen for your smartphone so it’s quicker and easier to see notifications without actually looking at your phone, making the Galaxy Note 3 the perfect release partner, given the potential size of its screen. But as to its look (the image you see above is a concept created by this website), spec, and other features, it’s all a mystery. Will we get a flexible screen? A dedicated application store? We’re all set to find out on September 4.

Wristwatches have been true extensions of people's personalities for much of the past century. Besides their impact on our social standing, researchers have also claimed that wearing a smartwatch may be associated with being more idealistic and humane. While that's contentious, watches have largely been replaced by smartwatches. Customization, especially the ability to change watch faces frequently, is among the biggest allures of owning a smartwatch -- besides the ease of having a reduced version of a phone on your wrist.
