Samsung invites us to meet the next Galaxy on May 3, we say yes please

Samsung Galaxy S III Invite OfficialThe wait for the Galaxy S III is nearly at an end, as Samsung has begun sending out invitations to an event in London on May 3 at 7pm local time, which says “come and meet the next Galaxy.’

Now, there’s obviously a chance this isn’t the highly anticipated Galaxy S III smartphone, but given the excitement surrounding its release, it would be cruel of Samsung to send out this type of invitation for a reworking of the Galaxy Ace.

Dutch tech website was first to publish the invite, and its authenticity was then apparently confirmed by an unnamed Samsung official to Korean site However, at the time of writing the news hasn’t appeared on any of Samsung’s numerous Twitter accounts — which was the one place we were told the official news would appear.

If you’re wondering whether this is an official invitation or not, Samsung has also published the same image on its Facebook page, but oddly omitted any mention of the date.

The invitation is simple, and features nothing but a few words and three blobs of colored liquid, which have a brushed metallic look to them. It’s obvious Samsung has been inspired by Apple’s cryptic event invitations, and we’d expect the event to take on a similar style too.

Previous rumors

This isn’t the first Galaxy S III event invitation we’ve seen, as just a few weeks ago, a leaked invite suggested the date would be May 22, however the accompanying picture and marketing blurb never fully convinced.

Another possibility was for the Galaxy S III to be launched during CTIA, a trade show scheduled for May 8. Although popular, it always seemed highly unlikely for Samsung to shun Mobile World Congress, only to choose another, similar event a few months later.

Also, given Samsung’s support of the 2012 Olympics, London made more sense as the location for the S III’s launch event. There’s also a chance we’ll see Samsung’s special Olympic edition phone at the same time.

Samsung’s event clashes with the final day of BlackBerry World, which is being held in Florida and runs from May 1 to May 3.

Apple-levels of secrecy

Almost nothing is known about the Galaxy S III smartphone, with Samsung managing to achieve Apple-levels of secrecy surrounding it. It may not even be called the S III, although the company has used the name to refer to the device in a few tweets.

Samsung’s quad-core Exynos processor has been linked with the phone, as has a large — possibly as big as 4.6-inches — touchscreen and a ceramic chassis. The only feature that seems almost certain is the inclusion of Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The countdown begins today.
