Samsung has started sending out invitations to an Unpacked event to be held on August 29 in Berlin. The last Unpacked event, which took place in London, was our glitzy introduction to the Galaxy S3, so what joys will this new event contain?
The invitation says “when magical moments come alive,” and there’s a wand conjuring something up from the Unpacked box. So, if we take the invitation at face value, we could guess that Harry Potter will be our host and Perry Como will be on the soundtrack.
However, Reuters has revealed what could pop out of that box, as a Samsung spokesperson is quoted as saying: “We plan to unveil the next Galaxy Note at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event in Berlin.”
It’s certainly good timing, as the original Galaxy Note was revealed almost a year ago to the day, at the IFA 2011 consumer electronics show. This year, Samsung has chosen to do the unveiling outside the IFA halls, and a couple of days before the show starts.
So why the references to magic in the invitation? It’s possible it’s a thinly-veiled jab at Apple, as the original iPad was described as “magical.”
Galaxy Note 2

A follow-up to the surprisingly popular Galaxy Note should come as no surprise, as aside from Samsung’s love of a good sequel, the controversial smartphone/tablet hybrid has sold at least 7 million units around the world. Not bad for something described as “too damn big.”
Talk of the Galaxy Note 2 has been gathering pace over the past few months. Rumors have hinted at an even bigger screen — this time 5.5-inches — but held in a chassis that’s almost the same size as the first Note, a feat Samsung previously achieved with the Galaxy S3 over the Galaxy S2.
The Galaxy Note 2 could also share the S3’s Exynos 4 Quad processor, with a clock speed of 1.6Ghz, and come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich pre-installed, along with the S3’s Nature UX tweaks too.
Expect the S-Pen to make another appearance, and we’d be surprised if the Note 2’s screen resolution changed from the Note’s 1280 x 800 pixel count too.
Timing will be crucial
Should Samsung reveal the Note 2 on August 29, the timing of its release will be critical. The company did the right thing with the Galaxy S3 — launched on May 3, on sale by May 29 — but it’s perhaps even more important to achieve the same turnaround this time.
Why? The next-generation iPhone. If the rumors are true, and that we’ll see an Apple launch event on September 12, and the new phone on sale either on September 21 or by the end of the month; Samsung will want to have its two flagship models — the S3 and Note 2 — in store and on sale at the same time.
Can Samsung’s double-whammy of the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2 topple the might of the next-generation iPhone this holiday season?
All will be revealed at 7pm local time in Berlin on August 29.
