Sharp Corp. has developed a TFT liquid- crystal display for mobile devices with improved viewing characteristics, the company said Friday.

The display offers a larger 160-degree viewing angle vertically and horizontally, a contrast ratio of 300:1 and a response time of 25 milliseconds, the company said.

With sizes from a 1.5-inch diagonal scree for digital still cameras up to a 6.5-inch diagonal display for car navigation systems, the displays are to begin sampling in December. Volume production will begin in spring 2004.

The new displays are produced using Sharp’s amorphous silicon manufacturing process and the CG-silicon process. CG-Silicon is a next-generation technology developed jointly by Sharp and Semiconductor Energy Laboratory Co. Ltd.
