Showing off the kind of statistics that every app developer must surely dream about, Angry Birds Space maker Rovio announced on its blog on Monday that the game, which launched on March 22, has been downloaded a staggering 50 million times in just 35 days.
These extraordinary figures make Draw Something’s 50 million downloads in 50 days look positively sluggish.
“This has been simply amazing, and the whole Rovio team is thrilled to see such a fantastic reception for the game,” the Finland-based company said in a post on its blog.
It continued, “We extend our deepest gratitude to all fans of Angry Birds everywhere. While numbers like this certainly say something about the popularity of Angry Birds, for us the main goal is to keep creating fun new experiences that everybody can enjoy!”
The success of Angry Birds Space, which is available on multiple platforms, follows in the footsteps of the equally popular earlier versions of the game: Angry Birds (with over 700 million downloads to date), Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Seasons.
While the start-up is primarily concerned with designing games for mobile platforms, it also sells a range of merchandise connected with Angry Birds, including pillows, magnets, toys and clothes. There’s even talk of Rovio building theme parks based on the bird-flinging game.
On top of all that, there are also plans to capitalize on the game’s huge popularity in China with the opening of around 200 retail stores in the country.
Rovio’s marketing chief, Peter Vesterbacka, told Reuters recently that it was the company’s wish for Angry Birds to become a permanent part of pop culture.
“We’re just getting started,” he said.
If all that merchandise, talk of theme parks, 700 million downloads of the original game and 50 million downloads in 35 days of its latest version is “just getting started,” we can hardly imagine what the world will be looking like once the company really gets going….
