Deal between two wireless providers allows customers who send MMS messages to do so to subscribers of each company's network.

Like Cingular’s announcement yesterday regarding their customers now being able to share MMS messages with customers of other services such as Sprint and Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and Sprint also said they would be allowing the same type of arraignment between their two networks.

Called Multimedia Message Service interoperability, it allows different wireless provider customers (in this case T-Mobile and Sprint) to send and receive pictures and video messages to each other. This is made possible for Sprint, according to a press release, by VeriSign through its LightSurf GX-MMS service. LightSurf GX-MMS service helps operators enable MMS traffic to more customers through a completely hosted and managed service.

“Sprint continuously looks for ways to enhance Sprint PCS Picture Mail service to make it easier and more convenient for its customers to share, print, store, manage and display digital images,” said Pierre Barbeau, general manager Picture Mail, Sprint. “Picture sharing interoperability with T-Mobile helps our customers stay better connected to their friends and family.”

“This is just another way T-Mobile is enhancing how customers communicate,” said Michael Gallelli, director of product management for T-Mobile USA, Inc. “T-Mobile’s customers want to expand their communications world by allowing more people — regardless of wireless provider — to receive their text, instant and picture messages.”

  1. fungku at 1:32pm 8th July 2005 About time. I really think the cell carriers here in the US need to open up their networks AND their phones. If I buy a phone from Cingular, I should be able to go to Verizon 2 years from now and use the same phone (unlocked.)
