Surprise, surprise: Bill Gates thinks the new Surface tablet is ‘unbelievably great’

Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates has been doing his bit to promote Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, and the company’s brand new Surface tablet, all of which are launching in the coming days.

Talking about the Surface tablet in a video interview (below) for Microsoft’s Next blog, Gates ensured that he left no one in any doubt about his feelings regarding the device. In the space of just 60 seconds, he described it variously as “an unbelievably great product”, “really amazing” and “absolutely incredible.” Steve Ballmer will be pleased.

“I got my Surface RT just recently and I’ve been using it day and night, showing it to everybody I meet,” Gates told the interviewer.

He explained that he’s currently using a “basic black” keyboard simply because “it was one of the first ones off the line,” before going on to sing the praises of the hinge. Yes, the hinge. “When you show people that hinge….you can’t appreciate it without seeing it,” Gates said with great enthusiasm. Microsoft clearly sees the Touch Cover, which attaches to the hinge on the side with an audible click, as a key feature and is pushing it at every opportunity – check out its recent TV ad to see how it dominates the action.

He urges people to “get to a store and play around with this thing. The way you put that keyboard on and off, the richness of the swiping takes the touch interface to a new level, just the beauty of the device. It’s absolutely incredible.”

As for Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 operating system, Gates reiterated Steve Ballmer’s words, calling it “an absolutely critical product” that takes Windows into the world of touch.

“People will be pretty amazed by the amount of energy Microsoft’s putting behind this new wave of products,” Gates said, calling it a “big time for us.” If Bill’s referring to the amount of money being spent on the Windows 8 marketing campaign – reportedly upwards of $1.5 billion – then yes, that is pretty amazing. But then again, the Seattle-based company can not afford to see these new products fail.
